David "BobDole" Hoffman on Yu-Gi-Oh!
The ToolBox Warrior Cookie Cutter Now as you all know, what's his face won that thing with that deck that was good. Which means, it's going to become Cookie Cutter. Wow, it's like I'm magically predicting the future. Except ya know, not.
TBW has been Cookie
Cutter for awhile now. It's just going to become even
more so now that someone's dominated with it. Abusing
DDA, Don, MSLV2, and just about every other card that's
shiny and has Warrior as its type. Now if it seems like
I'm kinda grumpy when talking about TBW, it's for a
rather good reason: I was running TBW two formats ago!
How the hell is now that people are just now realizing
it's good? I've been running the a Warrior deck since
LOD came out. Quite literally the first day it came out.
I went to my local WalMart and purchased a pair of
packs. To my surprise, I pulled Marauding Captain and
Fiber Jar. Talk about luck! The split second my eyes met
those of the Marauding Captain, I knew my lot in life
was to run a Warrior Deck.
Something just
pulled me in about him. He's the courageous, strong,
brilliant and charismatic leader. His only superior from
what I can tell, is Freed the Matchless General, who
might I add is quite matchable. So yes, I've been
running Warrior for a long time, and I probably will
forever. When I'm old and unable to do anything spare
yelling at kids on my lawn, and hitting people with a
cane, I'll hand my deck down to my Son. By this time YGO
will probably be dead and gone for awhile, but hell,
I'll teach my son the game, and he'll go win a Regionals
where a grand total of five people show up.
But I digress. TBW
is going to become completely Cookie Cutter, and though
it well deserves it, it's my job to come up with ways to
counter this deck. My suggestions are simple, and I
imagine several of you will disagree, but that's why I
didn't put
up my e-mail address
last article...
The first thing we
have to understand, is that TBW is Aggro/Control. Often
2-3 Don Zaloog will be employed, as well as multiples of
D.D. Assailant. Mystic Swordsman LV2, and possibly LV4
will be in there. The idea is to use Reinforcement of
the Army (RotA) like a Swiss Army Knife. You always have
an answer to their presented problem. Exiled Force is
worshipped in this deck. Premature Burial, and Call of
the Haunted are both abused insanely as well. Often
there are 1-2 copies of The Warrior Returning Alive,
which allows for even more MS and Exiled abuse. What're
the ways we can counter this? Quite simple actually.
First though, let's
take a look at a Cookie Cutter ToolBox Warrior deck.
Monsters: 17
1x Mobius the Frost
Monarch
3x Cyber Dragon
2x D.D. Assailant
2x Don Zaloog 1x D.D. Survivor 1x Mystic Swordsman LV2 1x Exiled Force 1x D.D. Warrior Lady 1x Goblin Attack Force 1x Sangan 1x Magician of Faith 1x Breaker the Magical Warrior 1x Cyber Jar or Morphing Jar (Depends on your play style, I personally go with Cyber)
Magics: 16
2x Reinforcement of
the Army
1x Snatch Steal 1x Heavy Storm 1x Mystical Space Typhoon 1x Dark Hole 1x Premature Burial 1x Book of Moon 1x Scapegoat 1x Nobleman of Crossout 1x Swords of Revealing Light 2x Smashing Ground 2x The Warrior Returing Alive 1x Pot of Avarice
Traps: 7
1x Call of the
Haunted
1x Torrential Tribute 2x Sakuretsu Armor 1x Ceasefire 1x Bottomless Trap Hole 1x Dust Tornado Though this is relatively close to my own deck, the success rate with this deck is much higher. This stems from my refusal to ditch Marauding.
Anyway, you can see
the basic build, and it most certainly has room to move
around. There really isn't a set CCTBW, as it's too easy
to have different play styles you have to adjust to. I
can't tell you what exactly to put into your TBW,
because it's meant to counter other decks. That's why
it's so playable. It combines Dons control abilities
with DDA's and Cybers smashing ability. GAF is in there
purely to stomp on Cyber Dragons. There are two cards I
have to go into before proceeding forward. They are: Pot
of Avarice, and Cyber Jar. First is Avarice.
Who can say
"Broken"? That's what this card is in TBW. It allows you
to put back monsters to search for. If you can't draw
into a Warrior Returing Alive, but you got RotA in hand,
and MSLV2, and Exiled are in the GY, this is a Godsend.
It gives you two more cards, and it puts monsters back
in the deck for RotA abuse. Granted it weakens Premature
and Call's power, but it's certainly worth it. This card
can be just plain devastating as a topdeck. Like
topdecking Pot of Greed itself, but even better. This is
giving you a +3 Advantage if RotA is drawn. Now you can
re-abuse everything your opponent was glad got knocked
outa the way. They may even start crying, which means
you can instantly claim victory!
The second card I have to go into, is one of my personal favorites. Though I never pulled it, I did trade a Dark Necrofear for it, Gearfreid and two Amazoness Paladin (It was awhile ago...). This card can win you duels, but at the same time, lose them for ya. It's definitely best when activated during your turn, but it's a Dark Hole no matter what. If your opponent swarms with Cyber Dragons and DDA's, you'll just stare him right in the face while attempting not to giggle like a school girl. He'll attack your facedown, and bam! He's now lost any advantage he might have hoped to gain with field swarm, and could end up killing himself because of his own recklessness.
This card either
leads to hand advantage, or field advantage. It can
replenish your hand with up to 5 cards, or swarm the
field with 5 monsters (And in a CCTBW, that almost
always means game). The best is when you get 2-3
monsters, and just a bit of Mt hand replenishment. Even
if your opponent does manage to effectively swarm you,
if he doesn't kill you, you're almost certainly going to
kill him. I prefer to set Torrential, or maybe side in a
Waboku when using Cyber Jar effectively. Doing so can
lead to enormous advantages. Nothing like pulling a
Sangan with 4 extra cards in hand and Torrential set,
just to see your opponent pull 5 monsters, each with a
gamebreaking effect. The smile you show him will almost
certainly convince him of
your insanity, and
though the men in the big white suits may come, you'll
be cackling at your +4 advantage you just landed in his
face.
Anyway, I can't tell
you to run Cyber Jar, as it's your decision no matter
what. If your tournament area runs nothing but Control,
CJ can be devastating. If they run nothing but Swarm,
this can have the same effect. Just remember that it's
always a risk, so make sure you have a Plan B set just
incase.
Back to countering
TBW. The best cards to stomp on Warriors are the ones
that can stop them from hitting the field. What am I
talking about? Other Warriors, and little Zombies of
course. I have had my pride punted all around the room
in the face of a good Control deck. Running multiple
copies of Don Zaloog, Spirit Reaper, and Sakuretsu can
effectively stop a TBW from performing it's job. TBW
relies on it's monsters to answer opponents. If you just
get rid of those answers, you can effectively create a
situation where they're trying to answer your answers.
The worst place for a TBW to be, is on the complete
defense. Since it's Aggro/Control, the TBW focuses on
being able to defend, while putting forth a decent
offense. Once you've effectively stomped the offense,
they'll have to rely on their defense. Which is often
not half as powerful as their offense. So what would an
Anti-CCTBW Deck look like? Well of course I'm going to
have one, I've faced a dozen of 'em already.
Monsters: 16
1x Mobius the Frost
Monarch
1x Airknight Parshath
3x Kinetic Soldier
3x Spirit Reaper 2x D.D. Survivor 2x Don Zaloog 1x Morphing Jar 1x Sangan 1x Breaker the Magical Warrior 1x D.D. Warrior Lady Magics: 17
3x Smashing Ground
2x Enemy Controller 1x Snatch Steal 1x Dark Hole 1x Heavy Storm 1x Swords of Revealing Light 1x Nobleman of Crossout 1x Book of Moon 1x Scapegoat 1x Premature Burial 1x Mystical Space Typhoon 1x Reinforcement of the Army 1x My Body as a Shield 1x Dark World Lightning
Traps: 7
3x Sakuretsu Armor
1x Torrential Tribute 1x Call of the Haunted 2x Time Seal Now this does admittedly look odd, but it really hurts CCTWB. This is a deck a friend of mine used to counter my own, and it hurt. I think I only won once out the six times we dueled. The Time Seals keep your opponent from having any options, and they can be chained to MST, Heavy, Breaker, and Dust Tornado. The Sakuretsu stops things like DDA and Don from ever getting a chance. My Body as a Shield negates Exiled Force, Dark Hole, Smashing Ground, Cyber Jar, and a number of other things the opponent uses to shut out your facedown. The Dark World Lightning smacks any facedowns TBW may run, which is often a DDA or Command.
Kinetics use is
obvious, as well as D.D. Survivors. The Don and the
Spirits are there to knock out your opps hand, and then
keep field presence (Neither Don nor Reaper can by
BTH'ed). All in all this deck can sweep a tournament,
but that's only if your opponents are all running CCTBW.
Incase they're not, that's when you abuse a Sidedeck.
You can simply sideout the Kenetics for DDA, and the My
Body for another Reinforcements. All in all this makes
for a nice Control based deck. It can slam your
opponents hand all around the field, while slamming your
opponents field all around the hand. Wait... that didn't
make any sense at all. I have got to stop writing at
1:30 in the morning...
But as usual, I
digress. TBW's often emply another Cyber Dragon, a
Drillroid, a MSLV4, and multiple other answers in their
sidedeck. All you have to do is stop the answers before
they can ever hit the field. Force TBW to topdeck, and
they're dead meat. Finally, I'd like to show you guys
the deck that most certainly will be netdecked. This is
Fili Luna's TBW.

Anyway, thanks
everyone for reading this. Just to let you all know, I
do Deck Fixes. I will fix basically any type, and if I
personally stink at that particular deck type, I'll be
sure to find someone who can. I'll be back again
sometime soon with another article. Hopefully this one
will be a Deck Fix.

E-mail all Deck Fixes (Following the example decks above), to TheBobDoler@Yahoo.com. Please format the list correctly, 'cause I don't feel like staring at a mixed up pile of letters that's bound to give me a headache.
Notes: Props to the
Chat, and the guy who complimented my article in the
Chat. And a super heaping load of props to Josh (AKA
Wicked) for helpin' me out all the time. Thanks bro.
