Legions of the Underworld - The Fiend Deck Fix
December 16, 2005
Howdy once again all
you loyal readers. My, you're looking good today, are those
new shoes? I see someone's been dipping into the Handsome
Creme. Now that I've put the bullcrap aside, it's time for
some deck fixin'.
(Just so you all know, the person doing CotD's with the name
of "Bob Doily", isn't me. The dude can't even spell "Fate"
right. I really have no idea who that is, so don't start
thinkin' that I'm actually doing CotD's now. If it's someone
messin' wit' me, all they had
to do was ask me to do a CotD.)
Thank you to everyone who submitted a deck. I tried to send
as many fixes out as I could, but unfortunately I'm just one
guy. If you didn't get a fix, my apologies. I'll be working
all today, and possibly tomorrow just trying to get your
decks fixed. Keep on sendin' them, 'cause I will be doing
some more fixes in the near future.
Well, I knew from the beginning what deck type I wanted to
fix, it was just a matter of
choosing from the dozen different ones sent. I found one
that needed some help, but
unfortunately the Duelist asked me not to post it up on
Pojo. I did kinda choose his deck just because his name
kicked ass (How many Garland Diamond's do you meet) so
really it wasn't fair. In the end, I opted for a deck a
friend of mine sent it. Not being biased, it just happened
that I knew already what he had, and the first deck should
be an easy one. Anyway, let's take a look at the power of
Fiends:
From: Alex Martin
"A nice little fiend deck that is mostly non-typical.
40 total cards
Tribute x3
Dark Ruler Ha Des x1
Dark Necrofear x2
Non-tributes x16
Newdoria x2
Mystic Tomato x3
Sangan x1
Cyber Jar x1
Shadowslayer x2
Magician of Faith x1
Exiled Force x1
D.D. Warrior Lady x1
Dark Jeroid x3
Drillroid x1
Spells x13
Snatch Steal x1
Premature Burial x1
Giant Trunade x1
Mystical Space Typhoon x1
Heavy Storm x1
Nobleman of Crossout x1
Fissure x3
Dark Hole x1
Book of Moon x1
Confiscation x1
Scapegoat x1
Traps x8
Call of the Haunted x1
Sakuretsu Armor x3
Dust Tornado x3
Torrential Tribute x1"
Not bad. Not bad at all. 'Course, there's always room for
improvement. First off, let's
take a look at the monsters.
We have a line-up of three tribute monsters. However, two of
them are Special Summon, which means basicly, that both of
them combined equals a real trib monster. That's in the
sense of difficulty atleast. Dark Ruler is nice for negation
and raw power. His 2450 will almost certainly top anything
your opponant can whip out, spare of course Bazoo (Who is
seeing less and less play since SJC). He can't be Special
Summoned, which is his only real weakness, however that does
allow you to RFG him with no real consequences. He can stay,
along with the two Necrophear that allow field
swarm/control.
Now the real problem I'm seeing, is that there are only nine
total fiends (Not including
Necro) that you use as food. Tomato does help, but with
Smashing Ground being run in multiples, along with Vortex,
MSLV2, and Drillroid, it's getting harder and harder to get
off Tomato's effect. We need a little extra draw power in
there, so I suggest dropping Magician of Faith for a Dark
Mimic LV1. Drop Drillroid for Night Assailant, and D.D.
Warrior Lady, and Exiled Force for a pair of Slate Warrior.
This deck already runs a good amount of removal, and unless
your opponant is running nothing but facedown negation, it
shouldn't b e hard to get some effects off. Shadowslayer is
crap upon crap, I wouldn't suggest it at all. Drop one for
another magic, and the other for a Don Zaloog. So all
together that's:
- 2x Shadowslayer
- Magician of Faith
- Exiled Force
- Drillroid
- D.D. Warrior Lady
+ Dark Mimic LV1
+ Night Assailant
+ 2x Slate Warrior
+ Don Zaloog
This speeds the deck up, and gives you some good advantages.
The Mimic helps thin, the Assailant can lead to a +1 by
killing the monster that flipped it, and then giving you a
Slate/Cyber Jar/Dark Mimic back to hand. The Slate Warriors
add some beatdown power to this deck, which it was really
lacking before. They can survive on the field if need be,
and they're good for a quick strike. Plus they give you a
bit of advantage when killed, handing you a weakened version
of Jeroids effect. That's it for the monsters. Next up we
have the Magics.
For starters, in this format, Confiscation is crap. With
Dark World lurking around every corner, plus the chances of
drawing this late game, this card has lot too much power.
Drop it for a Messenger of Peace. Yes I said Messenger of
Peace. Surprisingly enough, most of your monsters flip right
under this. Plus, if you draw into Necro or Hades, you can
drop it at the Standby. Next I'd add a Swords of Revealing,
which will help you to stall a turn or two in prep for Necro
swarm. This card also helps to flip up those facedowns
before they can be a real threat. Nothing like topdecking a
Swords into a facedown Cyber Jar that could have really hurt
during your opps turn. I already know that the creator of
this deck lacks 3x Smashing, so we'll go with 3x Fissure for
now. Once again, that's:
- Confiscation
+ Messenger of Peace
+ Swords of Revealing Light
The magics are good for now. Let's get to the last section.
The traps!
Firstly, it's just my own personal opinion, but three Dust
is too many. Drop one for
Ceasefire. A card that will help you deal with facedowns,
and provide the possible killing damage. It's a personal
favorite of mine. I'd also suggest dropping a Saku for a
Widespread, as Nobleman of Extermination is becoming more
popular. So the Traps are:
- Dust Tornado
- Sakuretsu Armor
+ Ceasefire
+ Widespread Ruin
Now as I said earlier, I already know what this guy's got.
Therefore, I have refrained from adding Dark World, or
removing any Jeroids (He loves them). I am kinda denying you
all a good Fiend deck fix because of my refusal to suggest
anything he doesn't have, so I decided to include what I
would normally have suggested for fixin'.
Monsters:
- Dark Jeroid
- 2x Shadowslayer
- Magician of Faith
- Exiled Force
- Drillroid
- D.D. Warrior Lady
+ 2x Slate Warrior
+ Night Assailant
+ Dark Mimic LV1
+ Breaker the Magical Warrior
+ Don Zaloog
Magics:
- 3x Fissure
- 1 Confiscation
- 1 Giant Trunade
+ 3x Smashing Ground
+ Enemy Controller
+ Dark World Lightning
+ Swords of Revealing light
Traps:
- Dust Tornado
- Sakuretsu Armor
+ Ceasefire
+ Widespread Ruin
Mainly the monsters changed. He asked for no Breaker, but in
a real deck fix, I would have to suggest it. Breaker is one
of the best cards in the game. He often leads to +1
advantage, if he doesn't get BTH'ed first. Obviously
Smashing Ground takes place over Fissure, as you don't see
too many monsters with huge attacks and low defenses
nowadays. Mobius being one of the very few. Enemy Controller
is nice in this deck. You can flip Dark Mimic, then sac it
to take their monster. Same thing with a used Breaker, N
Assailant, Jeroid, and Sangan. This deck focuses on little
hitters, so why not make it possible to drop them for
something big?
Dark World Lightning helps you deal with Facedowns. Though
it does require a discard, read the official ruling: "If you
do not destroy the targeted face-down card with the effect
of “Dark World Lightning” (such as if it is face-up as
resolution, or if it is destroyed by another effect first),
you do NOT discard 1 card from your hand." So basicly if you
force them to activate a trap card in response to DWL, you
don't have to discard. Which basicly makes it like a Normal
MST.
But I digress, here the finished Fiend Deck for Alex Martin:
Monsters: 18
1x Dark Ruler Ha Des
2x Dark Necrophear
3x Mystic Tomato
3x Dark Jeroid
2x Slate Warrior
2x Newdoria
1x Don Zaloog
1x Night Assailant
1x Dark Mimic LV1
1x Sangan
1x Cyber Jar
Magics: 14
3x Fissure
1x Snatch Steal
1x Dark Hole
1x Premature Burial
1x Mystical Space Typhoon
1x Book of Moon
1x Scapegoat
1x Heavy Storm
1x Giant Trunade
1x Messenger of Peace
1x Swords of Revealing Light
1x Nobleman of Crossout
Traps: 8
2x Dust Tornado
2x Sakuretsu Armor
1x Widespread Ruin
1x Call of the Haunted
1x Torrential Tribute
1x Ceasefire
Well, I hope you have as much fun playing it as I had making
it. Might I add that I hated making it with a fiery passion
unmatched by the stars themselves. I shall personally hunt
you down, and do the single most evil thing imaginable: Make
you run Cyber Dragon in a Fiend Deck.
Anyway, I am off once again, as I'm sure you've had your
fill of me for this week. Check back next week when I
attempt to pump out five articles. They should be relatively
short for the most part, which is a break from my normal
novel long articles. *Though I'm sure everyone absolutely
loves them*. (Note: Everything inbetween * is sarcasm)
I'll see ya'll soon, with an article about my personal
favorite cards, and a review of each of them. Hopefully I'll
manage to get a guest to accompany me with a review of each
card, and then I'll show a deck based around each of those
cards. Happy hunting, and have a good weekend. Ya bastards.
- David "BobDole" Hoffman
Notes: Props to the usuals. Thanks so much to everyone who
sent a deck. Keep on sendin', and who knows, maybe you'll
get picked. A good way to get picked is to have an original
name, as I like to make comments about how awesome your name
is mid-fix.
Remember that e-mail? It's TheBobDoler@Yahoo.Com. Please
people, I'm begging you to format the decks correctly. I
actually did recieve a good amount that were, but they most
certainly were overshadowed by the amount that weren't. I
won't fix a deck if you can't even take the time to format
it correctly.
