Article # 24 - Maniacal Machines For today’s article, we’ll be taking a look at 2 powerful Machine-type Monsters that were just released in the newest Japanese set; 308 - Sanctuary of the Sky. Let’s begin with a look at Blowback Dragon. Blowback Dragon Dark/Machine - Level 6 - 2300/1200 Effect: Flip a coin three times. If at least two of the flips come out to be Heads, destroy one card on your opponent’s side of the Field. This Effect may only be used once per turn, during your Main Phase. Blowback Dragon was an Ultra/Parallel Rare in 308, and it will be released in English 2 sets after Dark Crisis. Well.. Barrel Dragon just got a major update. Blowback Dragon nearly leaves its counterpart, Barrel Dragon, in the dust. For one, Barrel Dragon’s a Level 7 Monster with only 300 more ATK strength than Blowback Dragon. Second, Blowback Dragon’s searchable by the Witch, and Barrel Dragon is not. And of course, Blowback requires only 1 Tribute while Barrel Dragon would require 2. Not to mention Blowback Dragon’s Effect is more effective and useful. Barrel Dragon can only take out Monsters, while Blowback Dragon can take out any one card on your opponent’s side of the Field. A M/T card or a Monster card, whatever you may want to get rid of. Now, there are a total of 8 results you could get from flipping coins with Blowback Dragon.. HHH HHT HTT TTT TTH THH HTH THT You have 4 chances of flipping at least 2 Heads, and therefore you have a 50% chance of being able to use Blowback Dragon’s destruction Effect. Not bad at all. There’s even a one turn win combo you could sometimes easily manage to pull off in a Machine Deck.. Cannon Soldier + Blowback Dragon + Limiter Removal. Just get a Cannon Soldier and a Blowback Dragon out on the Field, and play Limiter Removal. Use Blowback Dragon’s Effect and get rid of an opponent’s M/T or Monster, whatever you’d need to get rid of to get off some direct attacks, then attack directly for 2800 from Cannon Soldier and 4600 from Blowback Dragon, for 7400 damage, then launch Blowback Dragon and Cannon Soldier for 1000 more damage and the win. Blowback Dragon’s a pretty great Monster card, really. 2300 ATK isn’t all too powerful, compared to Monsters like Shocker (Jinzo) or HaDes, but for 1 Tribute, its Effect (being even more powerful than Barrel Dragon‘s), and the ability to be searched and Special Summoned, 2300 ATK is plenty enough for Blowback Dragon. Blowback Dragon could fit very well into Machine Decks, Dark-based Decks, various Fun Decks, Beatdowns, etc. It’s just a really fun card to use, and it’s really effective. I’d give Blowback Dragon an overall rating of 8.2 / 10. For the second card of today’s article, we’ll be taking a look at another card just released in the Japanese 308 set; Needle Bunker. Needle Bunker Dark/Machine - Level 5 - 1700/1700 Effect: When this Monster destroys a Monster in Battle, do damage to your opponent equal to the destroyed Monster’s Level times 500. Needle Bunker was a Rare from the Japanese 308 set. It too will be released in English 2 sets after Dark Crisis. Needle Bunker’s certainly an interesting Machine-type Monster, and its Effect could be pretty devastating to your opponent.1700 ATK isn’t all too powerful for a Tribute Monster, but for one with such an Effect, anything higher simply might just be a little too much. (Though I myself don’t think it would be too much to have had its ATK be 1800, but oh, well) Some may argue that this card’s counterpart, KA-2 Death Scissors, a Common from the same set, is a bit better than Needle Bunker. KA-2 is a Level 4 1000/1000 Monster with the same Effect as Needle Bunker, but without any ATK-raising cards, KA-2 really won’t do much of anything for you. Needle Bunker could at least destroy some of your opponent’s Monsters on its own. Say your opponent has a Don Zaruug face-up on the Field in ATK mode. You bring out Needle Bunker, and attack and destroy your opponent’s Zaruug. The total damage done would be 300, as normal, then an extra 2000 on top of that, for a total of 2300 damage. This is because Zaruug’s a Level 4 Monster, and Needle Bunker does damage equal to the destroyed Monster’s Level times 500. 4 x 500 = 2000 + 300 = 2300. So it requires some math.. Not like it’s anything hard to figure out or anything XD. Oh, and btw, if Needle Bunker attacks a Monster of the same ATK strength, such as say, an Enraged Minotaur (Check Beastly Behemoths), both would be destroyed and the opponent would still take damage equal to that Monster’s Level times 500. In that case, 2000 damage would be done. But if that Enraged Minotaur attacked the Needle Bunker, it would do no damage, as Needle bunker was not the Monster declaring the attack. Anyways, Needle Bunker can fit well into some Machine Decks, and some Dark-based and Fun Decks as well. It’s certainly a really fun Monster card to use, and it could end up doing some pretty hefty damage to your opponent to easily aide you in victory. The only real downsides to Needle Bunker are that it requires a Tribute, and it doesn’t have too powerful of an ATK strength. But it will still be able to take out (usually) a majority of your opponent’s Monsters. But of course, Needle Bunker could work great with Limiter Removal. I’d give Needle Bunker an overall rating of 7.2 / 10. A very fun to play Monster card. Let’s wrap this up with an updated Machine Deck example using these 2 Monsters.. This is actually a version of my own Machine Deck that I use for fun. (If you want to know what Cypher Scouter does, feel free to ask me. I‘ll be reviewing it sometime soon) And btw, I’ll be using Japanese names of cards in my Deck lists from now on. It’s easier for me, so if you can’t figure out what any of them are, just ask me. This’ll be the last Deck example I give with English names in parenthesis. Monsters: 16 Total: 41
And that’ll do it for Article # 24 - Maniacal Machines. You can e-mail me with any questions and/or comments at dm7fgd32@hotmail.com Until Next Time.. ~DM7~
