Article # 27 - Mysterious Burst
Amplifiers For today’s article, we’ll be taking a look at 3 very interesting Magic Cards from the newest Japanese expansion; 308 - Sanctuary of the Sky. We begin today’s article with a review on Android Amplifier. Android (a.k.a. Electronic Brain) Amplifier Equipment Magic Card Effect: This card can only be equipped to an Android Psycho Shocker. (Jinzo) While this card is equipped to a Shocker, the owner of the equipped Shocker may still activate Trap Cards, and they are not negated by the Shocker‘s Effect. If this card leaves play, destroy the equipped Shocker. Android Amplifier was a Rare from the newest Japanese set, 308 - Sanctuary of the Sky. It will be released in English in the set after Invasion of Chaos. Android Amplifier’s quite an interesting Equipment Magic Card. Something solely for Android Psycho Shocker. (Jinzo) And the Effect on it isn’t too bad at all, though it’s not really something you’d want to run in any competitive Decks. It certainly could be a fun card to use, though. All you need to do is equip it to a Shocker of yours on the Field, and you’d still be able to activate Trap Cards while your opponent would still be unable to. The risk you take when using this card, though, is that even by something as simple as a Cyclone (MST) from your opponent, both your Shocker and Amplifier could be easily gotten rid of. That’s one of the reasons that the Android Amplifier wouldn’t be good for competitive play. There was a ruling made on the Amplifier almost immediately after its release due to the confusion it would have caused with Imperial Order. The activation and Effect of Android Amplifier can not be negated. This would mean if you were in a situation where you have the Amplifier equipped to a Shocker, and you have an Imperial Order set, you could activate it in response to an opponent’s Magic Card, and the IO would negate the opponent’s card as normal, but the Amplifier would not be negated. So you’d have Shocker out with the Amplifier, negating opponent’s Traps while you can still activate your own, and IO would be negating all Magic Cards. So the only thing left to fear would be opponent’s Monsters. Could be pretty nice, at least for a while, if you could pull it off. Overall, Android Amplifier’s not too good of a card, really. Allowing you to activate your own Traps while negating your opponent’s could surely come in handy once in a while, but rarely will you even have many Traps to activate anyway. (Unless using a Deck with more than the average amount of Traps, of course) I’d give the Android Amplifier an overall rating of 5.8 / 10. Its uses are limited due to the fact it can only be used with one Monster card, and that card’s restricted to one. For the second card of today’s article, we have Mystery Wok.. Mystery Wok Instant Magic Effect: Sacrifice one of your own Monsters on the Field. Select either the Sacrificed Monster’s ATK or DEF strength, and gain LP equal to that amount. Mystery Wok was a Common from the Japanese 308 set. It too will be released in English in the set after Invasion of Chaos. Mystery Wok’s a nice and effective card just recently released in Japanese. It’s one of my personal favorite cards in the new set, and one of my favorite Instant Magic cards in the game. (I’m a fan of LP-gain) This card can prove to be very helpful in various situations. The first thing you’d notice is that it’s an Instant Magic Card, making it chainable to different cards. This could come especially in handy if you have it set when your opponent plays a Thunderbolt (Raigeki), Dark Hole, or activates Chaos Emperor Dragon’s or any other Monster Destruction Effect. You can just activate it and destroy one of your own Monsters, and instead of it just being destroyed without benefitting you whatsoever, you’d gain quite a bit of LP from it with Mystery Wok, choosing either its ATK or DEF strength, whichever one’s higher, on the Monster you’ve chosen to Sacrifice for it. For an example, let’s say your opponent brings out a CED, and pays 1000 LP to activate its Effect. You have a Mystery Wok set, and a Dimensional Warrior Girl (D.D. Warrior Lady) face-up on the Field. CED’s Effect is activated, and you activate your Mystery Wok. Since DWG’s DEF is higher than her ATK, you’ll want to choose her DEF strength to gain LP equal to. So, just activate the Mystery Wok and send your DWG to the Graveyard, choosing her DEF strength. (1600) You gain 1600 LP before CED’s Effect is activated, and since Mystery Wok resolves before CED’s Effect, sending it and your DWG to the Graveyard, CED’s Effect would do 600 less damage to you than it would have, after you gain a hefty 1600 LP. Not bad at all. In that scenario, it’s likely that your opponent’s CED would have done more damage to them just from the activation cost than it would do to you. (And btw, if you don’t know what CED is, or can’t understand what I’ve explained there, it might be easier to check my very first article, so you can see about CED.) Same thing if your opponent were to activate a Thunderbolt or something.. Activate a Mystery Wok and gain a hefty amount of LP instead of having your Monster(s) destroyed for nothing. It can prove to be useful in quite a few situations. Mystery Wok can work well in Defensive Decks, Beatdown Decks, Chaos Decks, LP-gain-based Decks, and quite a few other types of Decks, depending on whether or not you‘d like a little (chainable) LP-gain, which can prove to be very useful. It can be a pretty versatile card in many situations, and in various types of Decks. It’s a card that’s certainly worth trying out if it interests you at all, and certainly worth including in Side Decks. Its chain-ability and mass LP-gain abilities can be extremely helpful, and it‘s a very fun card to use. I’d give Mystery Wok an overall rating of 7.6 / 10. For the final card of today’s article, we’ll be taking a look at Perishing Burst Stream, a.k.a. Horobi no Burst Stream. Horobi no Burst Stream Normal Magic Effect: This card can only be activated when you have a face-up Blue Eyes White Dragon on the Field. Destroy all Monsters on your opponent’s side of the Field. During the turn that this Effect is activated, none of your Blue Eyes White Dragon(s) can attack. Horobi no Burst Stream was a Super Rare in the Japanese 308 set. It will be released in English in the set after Invasion of Chaos, too. Horobi no Burst Stream (Likely to be called “White Lightning Attack” when released in English) is another card for use with just one Monster. However, unlike the Amplifier, this card’s use isn’t only with a Monster that you can only include one of in your Deck, anyway. Horobi no Burst Stream’s use is with Blue Eyes White Dragon.. Dragon users, or at least, Blue Eyes White Dragon users; here’s a card for you.. Whether you’d like to Main-Deck it or Side-Deck it, it’s a fun, and what-could be very effective card to use, and by looking at its Effect, you can obviously see its usefulness in what it can do for you. Simply get a BEWD out on the Field with Horobi no Burst Stream ready to go, activate it once BEWD is out, and it’s like a BEWD-Thunderbolt (Raigeki). It gets rid of all of your opponent’s Monsters, with the only drawback of your BEWD(s) not being able to attack during the turn you activated the Burst Stream. Not too much of a drawback, but if BEWD’s the only Monster on your side of the Field, you won’t like too much that secondary Effect of Burst Stream there. Note that it prevents any and all of your BEWD’s from attacking. If you have more than one BEWD, neither of them would be able to attack during the activation turn of Burst Stream Obviously, Burst Stream works best, and only in Decks using any amount of BEWD’s. Even if you don’t want to main-deck it, it’s a good card to include in the Side Deck of any Deck using BEWD(s). I’d give Horobi no Burst Stream an overall rating of 6.2 / 10.
