DM7FGD's Look Into the Future

Article #9 - Mythical Monsters and their Magic

Back again with another article. This time, we’ll be taking a look at 2 Monsters and their corresponding Magic Cards that work with them. We begin with a look at the Holy Beast Selket and the Royal Shrine.

*All Translations in this article courtesy of Edo’s Yu-Gi-Oh Page

http://www.stormpages.com/edhrzic/Yugioh.htm *

Royal Shrine

Type: Permanent Magic

Effect: You may activate Trap cards during the turn you Set them. Also, if this card is on the Field, you may place it and 1 of your Holy Beast-Selket on the Field in your Cemetery to choose 1 Monster from your hand, deck or Fusion Deck, and Special Summon it to the Field.

G6-B1 Japanese Promo Card

Holy Beast-Selket

Earth/Angel, Level 6 - 2500/2000

Effect: If you don't have a Royal Shrine on the Field, this Monster is destroyed. If this Monster destroys another during Battle, the destroyed Monster is removed from the game, and increase this Monster's attack strength by 500.

G6-B2 Japanese Promo Card

Selket..Quite the terrifying Monster. The only flaw with Selket is the requirement of having Royal Shrine on the Field, which won't be too hard for the opponent to get by with all the M/T destruction out there. But if you're able to Summon Selket to the Field, along with some protection for the Shrine, then your opponent's in for some big trouble.

Now, with Royal Shrine, it's not only if you choose to put the cards in the Graveyard, it's also if Selket is sent to the Graveyard by an opponent's card Effect. Using this Effect could get you something like a free Android Psycho Shocker, or even a free BEUD on the Field for some massive damage. It's always nice to get Selket on the Field, destroy and remove an opponent's Monster, then get rid of your Selket + Shrine for fear of Shrine being destroyed to bring out something like a BEUD with no drawbacks.

Also, Royal Shrine's Effect of activating Traps the turn you set them is pretty useful. Good with Ring of Destruction, etc.

Selket's like a huge Dimensional Warrior, with Dimensional Warrior/D-Warrior Girl-like Effects, only Selket isn't removed from play along with the destroyed Monster. A 2500/2000 Monster that gains 500 attack for each Monster it removes from the game..Just pure Evil.

Like I said, you just need the protection for the Shrine when using Selket. Judgement of Anubis can work well, for example. I reviewed that card in my Tenacious Traps article.

They are both great cards if you can use them right. I give Royal Shrine alone a 6.5/10, and Selket a 4/10, but using the 2 cards together to your advantage could mean total destruction. I give the 2 together an 8/10.

Moving on, we have the Masked Beast Death Guardius and the Bequeathed Mask.

Masked Beast Death Guardius

Dark/Demon, Level 8 - 3300/2500

Effect: this Monster can only be Special Summoned, and only if you sacrifice 2 Monsters, 1 of them being either a "Melkid, 4-Masked Beast", or "Cursed Gyura" (Grand Tiki Elder).

When this card is placed in the Cemetery from the Field, you may equip 1 "Bequeathed Mask" from your deck on 1 Monster on the Field. Shuffle your deck afterward.

G5-B2 Promo Card

Death Guardius is a very powerful card in various ways. 1st of all, 2 sacrifices for a 3300/2500 Monster is just..Wow.

2nd, if your opponent can manage to destroy Guardius, they'll just get a little taste of the Bequeathed Mask on 1 of their Monsters..

Bequeathed Mask

Normal Magic

Effect: Shuffle this card into your deck. Or, if Death Guardius's Effect has been used, this card becomes an Equipment card. Gain control of the Monster that this card is equipped to.

G5-B1 Promo Card

(Must be used from your deck with Guardius. If it's set on the Field or in your hand when your Guardius is sent to the Graveyard (By way of some Monster Destruction Effect, or even if MBDG is Tributed for something like a Great Demon Gaazetto), then you may not use it. That's where its "Shuffle this card into your deck" Effect comes into play.)

Another good thing about Guardius, is that once you get it out, since it's a Special Summon, you are still able to Summon another Monster from your hand, for a little extra attacking power.

The only big drawback with Guardius is that you must sacrifice 2 Monsters, and 1 of them must be either Melkid or Gyura, but just like with my current Malik deck, playing only 1 of each of those requirements works out quite well.

It can be a very powerful card, and is overlooked by many duelists. The card is used by the 2 Masked Brothers (I forget their English names) and Malik in the Anime. I give MBDG an all-around 7.2/10.

Some more stuff for clarification:

Masked Beast Death Guardius - Only 1 of either Monster requirement + 1 of any other Monster is needed to Special Summon MBDG. (1 Melkid + anything else, 1 Gyura + anything else)

Selket and Royal Shrine - Royal Shrine's Effect can indeed be spell speed 2, and the Effect can be chained to Royal Shrine's actual destruction. If the opponent activates a Cyclone or something on your Shrine, either during your own or your opponent's turn, you may chain to that with Shrine's Effect, destroying your own Shrine + Selket to Special Summon a Monster from your Hand/Deck/Fusion Deck. Makes Selket that much more powerful.
To state what I just said more clearly, I'll say it this way:

With Royal Shrine, it's an ability that triggers when it is destroyed, so it (The Special Summon) just happens, even during the opponent's turn.

Other interesting information:

The English names for Selket and the Shrine are “Mystical Beast of Serket” and “Temple of the Kings.”

Masked Beast Death Guardius and the Bequeathed Mask were used in the show by Umbra and Lumis, as well as Malik.

Selket and the Shrine were used by Rishid Ishtal (Odion) in his duel against Joey in the show.

And lastly, here’s an example of what a (pretty hard to utilize) deck using these 2 Monsters might look like.
