Article # 12 - Defensive Destructionists Today, for my 12th article here on the site, we’ll be taking a look at a couple Monsters, as well as one Trap card all dealing with strong Defensive tactics. I’ll begin this article with a look into the Big Shield Guarder. Big Shield
Guarder This Monster has a couple of interesting Effects, and with 2600 DEF for only a Level 4 Monster, it makes it perhaps one of, if not the best Monster for Defense out there today. Of course, since it is a Warrior, it may be searched by Reinforcements, as well as can be searched out by Sangan. Its first Effect is pretty simple. Say something like a Nobleman of Crossout targets your face down Big Shield Guarder. You reveal your Big Shield Guarder, and that Nobleman of Crossout is then negated and destroyed, rendering it useless. BSG then reverts to face up DEF position, and you still have a nice 2600 DEF wall out on the Field for you. Not much of a drawback at all. Other cards that BSG would negate while it’s face down would be Change of Heart or Book of Taiyou, for example. Just note that if it is face up, any card may target it, and that the only things that it negates are targeting Magic Cards. Its second Effect could be a bit of a drawback, though. If your opponent attacks it, perhaps expecting to do some hefty damage with a Monster such as Spear Dragon, and you flip it up to reveal BSG, your opponent will most likely be losing quite a bit of LP, but then BSG would change to ATK position, open for some hefty damage to yourself, as just 100 ATK isn’t exactly anything to be proud of. This Monster’s fun to use, and quite effective a majority of the time. It’s a nice surprise to have your opponent run into, as well. It’s also great to set on the Field, since it’s not easily destroyed, to set up for Tributing for a high-level Monster. This Monster was released first as a Secret Rare promo card from the GB5 game, then re-released as an Ultimate Rare in the DL1 set. Overall, I’d rate the Big Shield Guarder a 7/10. It could be useful in quite a few deck types, as well. Warrior, Earth-based, Defensive, etc. Moving on, we have an interesting Defensive Trap Card; Metal Reflect Slime. Metal Reflect Slime Type:
Permanent Trap This can be a great defensive Trap card. Activate it when one of your opponent’s Monsters attacks, and boom, they run straight into a 3000 DEF wall that they most likely won’t be able to get by with any Monster they may have. A couple good things about this Trap is that after activating it, it can be used as a Tribute in a Tribute-Summon. And of course, the 3000 DEF part. That’s always a nice stall tactic. A couple other things about it are that it can be destroyed by both M/T and Monster destruction cards, such as MST or Raigeki. It’s still a Trap card, but it being put on the Field in the Monster Zone as a Monster, so it kind of counts towards being both a Permanent Trap card and a Monster card. The not being able to attack part..Not really a downside. Wouldn’t attack with it anyway, would you? This card can be used in various types of decks. Obviously defensive decks, Water decks, some decks with 2+ Tribute Monsters, and of course Malik decks, but that type of deck will not be able to be played in the English game for quite some time. By the way, Metal Reflect Slime was a Japanese Ultra Rare promo card from the Valuable Book 5. No telling when it will be released in English. I would rate this card about a 6.8/10. Fun to use, and pretty effective most of the time. For the final card being reviewed in this article, let’s take a look at the Perfect Defense General, also known as the General of Impenetrable Defenses. Perfect
Defense General Pretty nasty Effect on this one, eh? Imagine the power if this guy could be Searched out by Sangan..Imagine if it could be brought out by the Tomato..It would make this Monster pretty darn powerful. Unfortunately, it has 50 ATK too much to be able to be searched out by anything. Since its DEF strength is certainly something to be more appreciated, its Effect of going to DEF mode when it’s Summoned or Flip-Summoned is pretty useful. That on top of being able to attack while in DEF position makes it a pretty powerful Monster. That makes it immune to something such as Mirror Force. And with 2550 DEF, it won’t be easy for your opponent to get by without some help from some Magic/Trap cards. The Perfect Defense General was released as a Secret Rare in the Booster Chronicle set, as well as an Ultra Rare Promo card from one of the earlier V-Jump issues. So there’s no telling when it will be released in English. This Monster can be good in Defensive decks, some Warriors decks, and a select few Dark-based decks. Wouldn’t recommend it for much else, and I don‘t really have too much else to say about this Monster. Overall, I’d rate it about a 6.7/10. I’ve heard of a lot of English duelists anticipating its release, but it’s really not as great as it’s seemingly being made out to be. Could be fun to use, though, and pretty effective in some cases. Lastly, here’s an example of a Defensive deck using the above-mentioned cards. Monsters: 16 1x Jinzo Magic: 19 1x Book of Moon Traps: 7 2x Metal Reflect Slime Total: 42 http://store5.yimg.com/I/my1stop2shop_1755_117168910 And that’ll do it for today’s article.
