DM7FGD's Look Into the Future

Article # 34 - Cypher Scouter + Gilfer Demon

For today痴 article, I decided to just review two cards of the TCG痴 future. One that will soon be released as promo card, and one that has an unknown time of release. Let痴 get started with a look at Cypher Scouter.

Cypher Scouter

Earth/Machine - Level 3 - 1350/1800

Effect: If this Monster battles with a Warrior-type Monster, increase this Monster痴 ATK and DEF strengths by 2000 for the damage step.

Cypher Scouter was a Japanese SCR/UR promo from the Shin DM2 game for PS2. It will be released in English as a Promo card (Kinetic Soldier) in the upcoming World Championships: 2004 game.

Cypher Scouter's a very interesting Monster card, and an extremely fun card to play. For one, it's a Level 3 Monster searchable by Critter, and it can get under things like Gravity Bind. It has a nice DEF strength, especially for a Level 3 Monster, at 1800, though that prevents it from being able to be Searched by the Witch. Not too big of a drawback, though. Its ATK strength is rather weak, at just 1350, but its Effect can more than make up for that.

Cypher Scouter can work well in Earth, Machine, and even Warrior Decks if you want to use some combinations of giving your opponent your Warriors (Creature Swap, Magic Box of Death, etc.) so you can nail them with your own Cypher Scouter. It can work very well with DNA Operation as well, obviously. Change Monsters to Warrior-types, then have your Scouter for some possible mass damage.

It has a Lily-like Effect, only with no cost being the advantage, and the fact that it only works against Warrior-types being the disadvantage compared to Lily. A Level 3 3350/3800 Monster is what you'll have with Cypher Scouter when in battle with any Warrior-Type Monsters, which are frequently run in many Decks by nearly everyone. That's pretty darn powerful. Imagine Cypher Scouter with Limiter Removal(s) up against a Warrior.. Ouch.

Note that, if you were to play a Limiter Removal with Cypher Scouter, it壇 raise its Attack to 2700, then an attack on an opponent痴 Warrior Monster would increase Cypher Scouter痴 ATK to 4700 total. Just 2 Limiter Removals played with Cypher Scouter when up against a Warrior could likely mean the end of the Duel for your opponent.

Like I said, Cypher Scouter's a very fun Monster Card to play, and it can end up being very effective for you, causing a lot of damage to your opponent. Overall, I'd give Cypher Scouter a rating of 7.5 / 10.

For the other card of today痴 article, we have Gilfer Demon, a card used by Yugi in the Anime.

Gilfer Demon

Dark/Demon - Level 6 - 2200/2500

Effect: When this card is put into your Graveyard, you may change it to an Equipment card, and equip it onto a Monster on the Field. A Monster equipped with this card has its ATK strength lowered by 500 points.

Gilfer Demon was released in Japanese first as an Ultra Rare Promo card from Weekly Jump, then reprinted in the Yugi Structure Deck volume 1 as a Common, then again as an Ultimate Rare in the Japanese 305 set. There痴 no telling when its English release will be.

Gilfer Demon痴 a pretty interesting high-level Monster card. With 2200 ATK points and 2500 DEF points, it can稚 be searched by anything, so it痴 not too much of a speedy card.

It痴 not too powerful, either, with a semi-low ATK strength for a Level 6 Monster. But this guy痴 Effect can sometimes make up for that. Its Effect states that when it goes to the Graveyard, you can change it into an Equipment card (meaning it can be destroyed by likes of M/T destruction) and equip it onto any Monster on the Field, lowering its ATK strength by 500 points. May not seem like much, but it could certainly prove useful in a tight situation, or if your opponent has some strong Monster up against you.

One thing you might notice about Gilfer Demon is that it seems like this could mean an infinite combo (in tourney-play) with Gearfried. (As in having your LP higher than your opponent痴, getting Gilfer Demon into the Graveyard and constantly equipping Gilfer Demon onto Gearfried until time runs out in the Duel and you win. Cheap, but it壮 been tried before, and by quite a few people, surprisingly) Well, there痴 an official ruling regarding this, and despite how many people thought otherwise, the combo is not possible.

The following is from the Japanese Expert Rules Site:

"「ギルファー・デーモン」の効果発動は任意のため、発動させなければ無限ループにはなりませんが、プレイヤーの意思によってそれを繰り返した場合は、反則とみなされる場合が ります。
(大会等では時間制限が るため、時間稼ぎ目的で行ってはダメ)"

That may or may not show up as Japanese writing on your computer. But anyways, here's a brief translation of what that says:

"Since Gilfer Demon's effect is optional, it cannot really count as an infinite loop. Since it is only an infinite loop with the intentions of the player, doing so is against the rules in tournaments with time limits where it is considered as 'stalling for time.'"

So basically, tactics that involve stalling for time are not allowed, and that is an example of one of those tactics.

Gilfer Demon痴 Effect can be used whether it痴 simply sent to the Graveyard by your own Card Effect, by Monster Destruction, through Battle, etc. But its Effect must be used during the same turn in which it痴 sent to the Graveyard, otherwise you won稚 get to use it.

Overall, Gilfer Demon痴 a pretty nice and interesting Monster card, but the reduction痴 not too great, and neither is Gilfer Demon itself, really. I壇 give Gilfer Demon an overall rating of 6.3 / 10.

That値l do it for today痴 article. I know, sorry, no Deck example today, either =/. But I値l have a Deck example in my next article for sure. Here痴 another poll for you guys. Let me know what you all want to see next. These 5 type choices are what my next 5 articles will be featuring, based on what gets the most votes.

What Future Cards do you most want to see reviewed?
Dragons
Rock Types
Dinosaur Types
Insect Types
Bird (Winged Beast) Types

And that痴 it for Article # 34 - Cypher Scouter + Gilfer Demon. E-mail me with questions and/or comments at dm7fgd32@hotmail.com

Until next time..
