OCG Discussion Article # 1 - Rarities Alright, for the first article of my new OCG Discussion section here (in which I‘ll just be discussing things about the OCG that aren‘t card articles (Looks Into the Future or News articles), I’ll be talking about all of the Japanese card rarities. So let’s just get right to it. I’ll be including a card rarity picture example of each type of rarity after each rarity explanation. (If the links don’t show up click-able, just copy/paste them into your address bar) Common (C) - Just normal cards. Example: YataGarasu from MA set - http://store5.yimg.com/I/my1stop2shop_1779_284089484 Normal Rare (NR) - A.k.a. Short-print Commons. They come in one per box, and are just that; short-printed Commons. Example: Sealing Magician Mesei from the 308 set - http://store5.yimg.com/I/my1stop2shop_1776_970844 Rare (R) - Cards with silver-foil lettering. Example: Thunder Lord - Zaborg from the 308 set - http://store5.yimg.com/I/my1stop2shop_1776_10882949 Super Rare (SR) - Cards with holo-foil pictures. Example: Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon from Premium Pack 3 Promo set - http://www.ideal808.com/images/P3_01.jpg Ultra Rare (UR) - Cards with holo-foil pictures and gold lettering. Example: Blowback Dragon from 308 set - http://store5.yimg.com/I/my1stop2shop_1776_10456790 Secret Rare (SCR) - Cards with silver/polarizing lettering, and holo-foil/polarizing pictures. (Exceptions: Noseferatu Lich SCR from PH set has rainbow-colored lettering. God Card promos have the polarizing Effect throughout the whole card) Example: Chaos Emperor Dragon from 306 set - http://www.ideal808.com/images/306_056.jpg Ultra Secret Rare (USR) - The scarcest rarity of all. Cards with holo-foil pictures and silver lettering. If I’m not mistaken, there are only a total of 10 Ultra Secret Rare cards to date. The 9 promo cards from the Limited Edition 1 promo set, and a very rare, and pretty old Flame Swordsman (alternate art) promo card. I can’t find a picture of the Flame Swordsman anywhere, so I’ve scanned my own and hosted the picture. Here’s an example of an Ultra Secret Rare; the Flame Swordsman promo - http://members.cox.net/holly21/DM7FlameSwordsmanUSR.jpg Parallel Rare (PR) - Parallel Rares are similar to Secret Rares, only that the cards have gold lettering, and the polarizing Effect goes throughout the entire card. Ultra Rare cards (from expansion sets and some promo sets) have Parallel Rare versions, that are more rare. Here’s a link to an eBay auction with a Parallel Rare Vampire Lord card from the DL4 set. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3172509768&category=49208 - Parallel Rare exceptions are the Parallel Rares of the Premium Pack 3 promo set. They are just like any other Parallel Rares, except that they don’t have the gold lettering. Lettering’s just normal. Ultimate Rare (UTR) - As rare as rare gets. Expansion sets with these cards usually contain one Ultimate Rare in about every 2-3 boxes of cards, or 60-90 packs. They used to be a bit more scarce, but are being printed more nowadays. Ultimate Rares have a holo-foil 3d-relief Effect throughout the whole card, in the pictures, the Type Circles, and in the Level Circle(s). They also have gold lettering. Example: Android Psycho Shocker from 308 set - http://www.ideal808.com/images/308_057u.jpg As of now, there are only 37 different Ultimate Rare cards, and only 2 are promo cards. There are now tending to be 2 Ultimate Rare cards per expansion set. All Ultimate Rares are as follows: BPT-J02 Chaos Emperor
Dragon - Messenger of Destruction 308-034 Great Angel -
Zeraht 307-010 Chaos Black Magician 306-057 Magician of Black
Chaos And those are the Japanese rarities; the first OCG Discussion Article. ~DM7~ |
