OCG Discussion Article # 2 - Deck-Type Discussions 02.16.04 For today’s OCG Discussion article, I’ll just be talking about a few different Deck-types, and giving quite a few Deck-examples, including listing some of my own Decks, of which you’re free to get ideas from, though I’d rather not be copied =/. But anyways, let’s get started. We first take a look at the almighty Chaos Decks. What are these types of Decks based on? Well, that’s simple; the Chaos Monsters. (Chaos Emperor Dragon and Chaos Soldier, sometimes as well as Chaos Black Magician - See my 1st and 32nd articles) Some Chaos Decks are based around sheer power and overwhelming of the opponent. Others are based on speed and getting out the Chaos Monsters as fast as possible. Either way, Chaos Decks are extremely effective, and about the 2nd-most effective and played Deck-type out there in the OCG today, as will soon be the same in the TCG. Trust me, once the Chaos Monsters are released in English, Chaos Decks will be running rampant. When using Chaos Decks, it’s best to use a good ratio of Light and Dark-type Monsters because of the Chaos Monsters’ Summoning requirements. It’s also sometimes good to include cards such as Kycoo and/or Soul Release to help in putting a stop to your opponent’s Chaos Monsters. Here’s an English Chaos Deck example, using cards up through IOC. Monsters: 17 1x Chaos Emperor Dragon - Messenger of Destruction 1x Chaos Soldier - Messenger of Creation 1x Chaos Black Magician 3x D.D. Warrior Lady 1x Reflect Bounder 1x Thunder Nyan-Nyan / X-Head Cannon 1x Magician of Faith 1x Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer 1x Breaker the Magical Warrior 1x Cannon Soldier 1x Yata-Garasu 1x Cyber Jar 1x Black Forest Witch 1x Sangan 1x Sinister Serpent Magic Cards: 17 3x Mystical Space Typhoon 1x Raigeki 1x Dark Hole 1x Harpie’s Feather Duster 1x Heavy Storm 1x Pot of Greed 1x Graceful Charity 1x Mirage of Nightmare 1x Monster Reborn 1x Premature Burial 1x Change of Heart 1x Snatch Steal 1x Painful Choice 1z The Forceful Sentry 1x Nobleman of Crossout Trap Cards: 6 2x Torrential Tribute 1x Imperial Order 1x Call of the Haunted 1x Mirror Force 1x Ring of Destruction Side Deck: 15 3x Thunder Dragon 1x Jinzo 1x Airknight Parshath 1x Drillago 1x Don Zaloog 1x Spirit Reaper 1x Magical Scientist 1x Hysteric Fairy 1x Scapegoat 1x Delinquent Duo 1x Soul Release 1x Magical Cylinder 1x Waboku Fusion Deck: 8 2x Dark Balter 2x Thousand Eyes Rest 2x Fiend Skull Dragon 2x Ryu-Senshi Total: 40 Three D.D. Warrior Lady may seem like a lot, and they may not seem too good for Chaos Decks due to her Removal Effect, but fact is they are good for Chaos Decks. If you’re in a tight spot, DDWL can help you in removing your opponent’s Monsters from the Game. If you’re in a situation where you could use a Light Monster in the Graveyard, DDWL can also be good for that. Thunder Dragons in the Side Deck in case you want to throw in some speed to your Chaos Deck, getting 3 Light Monsters into your Graveyard in a single turn. Cannon Soldier = Burn, and quick Chaos fuel for the Graveyard. The other cards in the Deck should be self-explanatory. Standard cards for Chaos Decks, as to what’s been released in English thus far. Now, here’s an example of a Japanese Chaos Deck. This is a version of one of my own Chaos Decks. If you’re unsure about what some of the cards do, you can check my other articles or ask me about them. Monsters: 17 1x Chaos Emperor Dragon - Messenger of Destruction 1x Chaos Soldier - Messenger of Creation 1x Android Psycho Shocker 1x Kaiku - Turner of the Dead 1x Igzarion Universe 1x Magic Warrior - Breaker 1x Don Zaruug / Cannon Soldier 2x Blade Knight 2x Dimensional Warrior Girl 1x Marshmallow 1x YataGarasu 1x Cyber Pod 1x Black Forest Witch 1x Critter 1x Killer Snake Magic Cards: 18 3x Cyclone 1x Thunderbolt 1x Dark Hole 1x Harpy Feather Sweep 1x Heavy Storm 1x Raise Dead 1x Early Burial 1x Pot of Greed 1x Angel’s Gift 1x Change of Heart 1x Theft 1x Tough Choice 1x Mirage of Nightmares 1x Apostle of Obliteration 1x Steadfast Guard 1x Mystery Wok Trap Cards: 6 1x Imperial Order 1x Tidal Wave 1x Mirror Force 1x Destruction Ring 1x Cry of the Living Dead 1x Sixth Sense Total: 41
Other current Decks of the OCG include multiple First-Turn-Win Decks. The objective of these Decks should be obvious; to win on the first turn, or within the first couple of turns. There are a variety of these kinds of Decks, including Magical Scientist, Reversal of Worlds, and Last Battle. Here’s an example of a Reversal of Worlds F-T-W Deck, followed by one of my own Decks, based on Light and Thunder-type Monsters, using RoW. The basis of the F-T-W Reversal of Worlds Deck is to fill up your Graveyard fast so you can use Reversal of Worlds as quickly as possible, likely ending up in your victory. Monsters: 9 3x Thunder Dragon 2x Executioner Makyura 2x Metamol Pod (Morphing Jar) 1x Cyber Pod / Mask of Darkness 1x Toon Cannon Soldier Magic Cards: 23 3x Royal Shrine 3x Toon Index 3x Book of Sun 2x Foolish Burial 2x Dragged Down to the Grave 2x Magic Regeneration 1x Pot of Greed 1x Angel’s Gift 1x Card Destruction 1x Soul Release 1x Tough Choice 1x Reload 1x Shallow Grave 1x Cyclone Trap Cards: 8 1x Reversal of Worlds 3x Jar of Greed 3x Sixth Sense 1x Reckless Greed Total: 40 How that Deck is used should be pretty obvious.. Tons of speed, and RoW support make it easy for you to come away with a first turn victory. Now here’s the Decklist for one of my own Decks, based on Light and Thunder-type Monsters, along with RoW. Monsters: 15 1x Toon Cannon Soldier 1x Mirage of Nightmares The basic themes of this Deck are simply to use the Light and Light/Thunder-type Monsters to my advantage, and ultimately getting Reversal of Worlds into the mix for a bit of an effective fun-factor. It’s a pretty effective Deck, and it’s very fun to play.
Now for a little something about Character Decks.. Character Decks are some of the most fun Decks to play in the entire game, and they’re very possible to create and utilize in the OCG, but unfortunately not too much so in the TCG. What Character Decks are based on should be obvious. If you want to make a Yugi Character Deck, then you make a Deck using cards of Yugi’s, that he uses in the show, Manga, or whatever. Same for if you want to make a Malik, Bakura, Kaiba, Joey, or someone else Character Deck. Not only are they extremely fun to play, but they can also be very effective in both casual and competitive play. Here are 2 examples of Character Decks. The first is a full-out Malik Character Deck of my own, followed by my Malik Character Deck that I use for competitive play. Monsters: 17 1x Masked Beast - Death Guardius 1x Hell Poemer 1x Lava Golem 1x Melkid-Four Faced Beast 1x Drillago 1x Gil Gars 1x Bowgunian 1x Executioner Makyura 1x Dark Jeroid 1x Neudoria 1x Iron Demon Viser Death 1x Guranadora 1x Lord Poison 1x Rekunga 1x Revival Slime 1x Black Forest Witch Magic Cards: 15 2x Cyclone 1x Bequeathed Mask 1x Thunderbolt 1x Dark Hole 1x Raise Dead 1x Premature Burial 1x Pot of Greed 1x Angel's Gift 1x Heavy Storm 1x Snatch Steal 1x Delinquent Duo 1x Dragged Down to the Grave 1x Magic Regeneration 1x Curse of Pain Traps: 8 1x Imperial Order 1x Torture Wheel 1x Rope of Life 1x Ambush 1x Monster Relief 1x Mirror Force 1x Call of the Haunted 1x Metal Reflect Slime Total: 40
Monsters: 17 1x Snatch Steal Total: 41
Next, the Sub-Type-based Decks.. More Decks of which the themes are obvious. Base them on certain Sub-Types and those only. Here are a few Sub-Type-based Deck examples, (each are my own Decks) that become more playable as future sets and promos are released. Aerial Aristocrats - A Wind-based Deck Monsters: 16 1x Magic Canceller 3x Newt (Slate Warrior) 2x Female-Ninja Yae (Japanese 308 set) 2x Chaos Rider - Gustav (306 set) 1x Slypheed (306 set) 1x Dol Dora (Twin-Headed Behemoth) 1x Nin-Ken Dog 1x YataGarasu 1x Fiber Pod 1x Black Forest Witch 1x Critter 1x Killer Snake Magic Cards: 16 3x Cyclone 1x Thunderbolt 1x Dark Hole 1x Harpy Feather Sweep 1x Heavy Storm 1x Pot of Greed 1x Angel’s Gift 1x Raise Dead 1x Premature Burial 1x Change of Heart 1x Snatch Steal 1x Apostle of Obliteration 1x Tough Choice 1x Steadfast Guard (Forceful Sentry) Trap Cards: 8 1x Imperial Order 1x Sixth Sense 1x Cry of the Living Dead 1x Destruction Ring 1x Mirror Force 1x Magic Cylinder 1x Tidal Wave 1x Waboku Total: 40

And last but not least, here’s an example of a Fun Deck, (one of my own) that also has the capabilities of being played competitively. It’s a Deck based on both LP Gain and Burn. I Gain It; You Lose It - An LP-Burner/Gainer Deck
Monsters: 16 2x Guardian Angel - Jeanu (Translation after Decklist) 2x White Magician - Pikeru 2x Stealth Bird 2x Prominence Dragon 1x Cannon Soldier 1x Bowgunian 1x Marshmallow 1x Sphere Bomb 1x Cyber Pod 1x Black Forest Witch 1x Critter 1x Killer Snake Magic Cards: 19 3x Cyclone 2x Mystery Wok 2x Sebek’s Blessing 1x Thunderbolt 1x Dark Hole 1x Pot of Greed 1x Angel’s Gift 1x Mirage of Nightmares 1x Harpy Feather Sweep 1x Heavy Storm 1x Raise Dead 1x Premature Burial 1x Change of Heart 1x Snatch Steal 1x Tough Choice Trap Cards: 6 1x Imperial Order 1x Call of the Haunted 1x Magical Cylinders 1x Attack Drain 1x Rapid-Firing Machine Gun 1x Destruction Ring Total: 41 Guardian Angel - Jeanu Light/Angel - Level 7 - 2800/2000 Effect: If this Monster destroys an opponent’s Monster in Battle, gain LP equal to the destroyed Monster’s base ATK strength. Very fun Deck to play. I can gain LP in here just as fast as I can take it away from my opponent, and there’s plenty of support for both LP-Burn and LP-Gain. ----- Whew. 15 pages of Deck discussions and examples. Well, that’ll do it for OCG Discussion Article # 2 - Deck-Type Discussions. I hope it gave you guys some new ideas, and/or showed that there really are a lot of playable and competitive Deck-types out there. (or at least there will be in the future TCG, just as it is now in the current OCG) If you have any questions about any cards, as in what they are or what they do, or if you have any comments on the Deck examples and/or discussions, you can e-mail me at dm7fgd32@hotmail.com Until next time.. ~DM7~ |
