DM7FGD's Look Into the Future ...
Article # 61 - A
Wicked Card to Play
Today’s article will
only be featuring one card, but the one card is a beast. It
was just recently released in the latest Japanese issue of
V-Jump Magazine, as an Ultra Rare, VJC-JP009. Nobody knows
when or if this card will be released in English. This new
Monster Card is called.. Devil’s Dread-Root.
Devil’s Dread-Root
Dark/Fiend - Level 10 - 4000/4000
Effect: This card cannot be Special Summoned. This card can
only be Normal Summoned by offering three Monsters on your
side of the Field as a Tribute. As long as this card is
face-up on the Field, the Attack and Defense strengths of
all other Monsters on both sides of the Field are halved.
Wow; like I said, this Monster is certainly a beast. It has
the highest ATK and DEF strengths for any regular Effect
Monster, at 4000 each. Being a Dark/Fiend, it obviously can
work well in Dark and/or Fiend-based Decks, and it can fit
well into any Deck that can get Monsters out onto the Field
fast, and keep them there until Dread-Root‘s ready to come
into play.
Dread-Root can’t be Special Summoned at all, but that’s no
surprise. If it could be, this card might just be a little
too powerful. It can only be Normal Summoned, and only be
offering three Monsters on your side of the Field as a
Tribute. If you play the OCG, you can use Trap Monsters or
Devil’s Sanctuary to help with Dread-Root. You can use cards
like Stray Lambs, Giant Germ, or Ultimate
Offering along with Dread-Root to make it easier to get out
onto the Field, as well. Double Coston's Effect cannot be
used with Dread-Root to count as 2 of the 3 Monsters needed
to Tribute for Dread-Root.
Dread-Root has a potentially devastating Effect, as well.
When it comes into play, the Attack and Defense strengths of
all other Monsters on the Field (that’s including your own,
of course) are halved. So say for example you have a Kycoo
on the Field, along with 3 other random Monsters, and your
opponent has a Jinzo and D.D. Assailant out on the Field,
both in Attack mode. You sacrifice your 3 random Monsters to
bring out Dread-Root, and you’ll have a 900/350 Kycoo, along
with a 4000/4000 Dread-Root on your side of the Field, while
all your opponent will have is a measly 1200/750 Jinzo and
an 850/800 D.D. Assailant to be easily disposed of. If you
can get your attacks through, then that would be an easy
2850 damage done, which is quite a lot only by attacking and
destroying Monsters in just one turn.
The thing is, though, that getting Dread-Root into play will
really usually will be very troublesome and rarely worth it.
I would consider Dread-Root to be more of a collector’s
card, or a card to try out using in Fun Decks for casual
play only. It’s a hard Monster card to work with, although
an extremely fun one to use when you can get it out onto the
Field. Dread-Root is basically just like a slightly more
fun/easier to use version of F-G-D, in that it‘s pretty much
a “waste“ of various resources for the sole purpose of
Summoning a huge attacker. Don’t get me wrong, though.
Dread-Root can certainly cause a potentially game-winning
amount of damage when it hits the Field, even without the
help of its halving Effect, which just makes it that much
easier to do that much more damage. It’s just not too often
that it actually will hit the Field.
There are ways to make Dread-Root easier to work with, but
when doing so, it will usually mean you’ll be mainly relying
on Dread-Root in itself to get you anywhere in the Duel.
That might work out some of the time, but doing something
like that usually won’t be a very good idea.
Overall, Devil’s Dread-Root is an interesting Monster card
with many capabilities. However, it will usually be very
tough to be able to use it to its fullest potential, making
it more of a fun card than a reliable and viable card. The
card art is certainly nice, too. Rating: 6.7/10.
And now, here’s an example of a Devil’s Dread-Root Deck.
