Dark Maltos's Dueling Dome
Maltos’s Friday deck - Control

May 12, 2006

Control is a deck type which first came about back in the days of Magic Ruler, and from the start people knew it was going to be huge especially with the heavy hitters like Forceful Sentry and Delinquent Duo back in the day.

Control redefined Yugioh from being a game all about brute force to a game about strategy and psychology , two things which in essence have made the game the success it is today, without the control aspect this game would have kicked the bucket a long time ago. Over the years it has popped up in such a wide variety of forms it is unbelievable, but the definitive aspect of the control deck is still dominant.

The main focus of a control deck is too eliminate the opponents resources as quickly as possible, mainly out of their hand, in order to switch the game in your favour, and over the last few years, many cards have been released that accomplish this.

Don Zaloog ;

Arguably one of the best control cards ever made, Don Zaloog is a nifty little monster to say the least. For a level 4 monster, Don has the standard ‘Control Stats’ of 1400/1500 and packs the added effects of either taking two cards off the opposing deck, or the far more used discarding of a card from the opposing hand whenever this card inflicts damage. Absolutely fantastic for this deck, and allowed in 3’s.

Spirit Reaper

Don Zaloog is pretty much at the top of the list for the control deck, but Spirit Reaper is a very close second. Spirit Reaper serves as both an impenetrable wall and a discard attacker, a beautiful effect, and also allowed in 3’s. Staple in this deck.

Jinzo ;

Although he strictly doesn’t effect the hand, he does lock down opposing traps, an effect which in the past has set up many control decks for the win. Jinzo has raw power, backed up by a beautiful and abusive effect, so he’s in.

Airknight Parshath :

Another monster that has fallen out of favour, but I still think it rocks. Airknight is almost a reflection of the control aspect, allowing you to draw a card instead of the opponent losing one when it inflicts damage. Luckily enough, Airknight also packs a piercing effect. Airknights main weakness is its low attack, but if you can protect it, it is more than worth it in the end.

Melifist the infernal general :

This cards effect is a reflection of Airknight, but instead discarding a card and having a 100 fewer attack points. Melefist has never really been used, but if you can use it effectively it can be worth the payout.

Chaos Sorcerer :

Recently, this card has got a lot of attention, and rightly so. If you can use a Sorcerer, do. With 2300 attack and a costless monster removal effect its worthwhile. Field control helps too.

White Magical Hat

In order to pack enough lights and still stick to the Discard theme, im going to use this old classic, a slightly weaker Don Zaloog.

Spell and trap wise, there are slightly less options available to us than there used to be, but still :

Confiscation ;

The last remaining card from the Spell ruler set of 3, Confiscation has proven to be really effective, lending a greater insight into the heat the opponent is packing, as well as a discard.

DD Designator :

Use this after a Confiscation and you’re laughing. Use it without, and you’re taking a risk, still it’s a powerful card, and definitely one worth considering, especially with the advent of Dark World, this deck types one major flaw.

In order to counter another flaw this deck possesses, certain other cards shall be added too.

Wicked Breaking Flamberge Baou :

Try saying that 3 times fast !! The main logic behind this is to amplify your Airknights and Melefists in order to grant them further power with effect negation, as well as a decent enough attack increase. Combo these together and you could be sitting tight.

Mega morph ;

Ok, so this is a bit of an odd one, but it can really help out the control deck by either doubling your own monsters power , or weakening the opponents, as the major flaw with most control cards is the lack of attack power. This card can compensate for this.

Trap wise, there is lots that can be really fun

Robbin Goblin :

Evil isn’t it? A double discard when used correctly, or a discard and a draw. Staple.

Drop off

In essence, this is the same as discarding a card from the opposing hand, and can be just as deadly.

Magical Thorn

By doing what we were going to do anyway, we can now add that extra bit of damage with this. 500 may not sound like much, but it adds up, believe me.

Ominous fortune telling :

Making that daunting task of DD Designator that much easier to do, worth a shot.
