Dueling Dome
Well guys its been a while since I’ve done an article
that’s been up to scratch. I haven’t done anything with
my pojo space for a long while, except the odd screwball
deck that neither been here nor there, and I’m sorry.
GCSE’s have gotten in the way , but they are finally
over. I have to admit that I have been going through a
dry spell in terms of interesting philosophy or a random
dueling rant. So, I’ve decided to do something
different, something that can appeal to a wide audience
and generally duelists on the whole. A 7 step program,
WHOOPA !!!
7 has always been considered a magic number. There are 7
days in a week, 7 Horcruxes in Harry Potter, 7 dragon
balls in Dragonball Z, the number 7 on Beckham’s shirt
(come on England !!!) so generally, it would seem that 7
is the way to go with anything.
The first step I will present to try and increase your
dueling technique is a simple mind exercise that will
tie in with step 1 - Know your deck
The deck is the essential part of any duelist
combination. A duelist without a deck is pretty much a
random guy who knows all the rules. A deck without a
duelist is a pile of (for the most part expensive)
paper. Neither are anything without each other, they
have a symbiotic relationship. Neither can function
without the other. A deck is an extension of a player,
their weapon to duel with. It signifies their value as a
player, contrasts their thoughts and feelings of the
game. It can symbolise their knowledge, or lack of , of
the game and generally is a personal statement for the
duelists themselves.
Familiarity with your deck is one of the most basic
trait’s a duelist should have, after all they built it.
Duelists should know every card in their deck and every
combination it has with every other card in the deck.
That way they know what they’re doing, and what to
expect from their deck in the long run. If you don’t
your complete understanding of your style of play will
crumble and you will be left questioning yourself in the
most desperate of times, when you‘re up against a wall.
That’s not the way you want it to be, you need to know
your deck thoroughly, and what it can provide you with.
In times of need you need to have some idea of your way
out , have some way of countering an opposing strategy
and you not only need to know one way, you need to know
the best way , and what you can do to make that happen.
The best way to do this is one of the simplest exercises
ever devised. Simply write out your entire deck on a
piece of paper without looking at it. (the deck, not the
paper, the latter WOULD be strenuous). This tests your
complete understanding of how your deck works and the
cards contained.
It sounds relatively easy, but it isn’t as simple as it
sounds. You’ll probably find that you can reel them off
quite simply at first , but after a while you begin to
struggle. You may find that you forget a card or two, or
that your mind jams on the last 2 cards. Its life, it
happens. The important thing to do is to count through
the cards you’ve written down, monsters , spells and
traps until you know them off by heart. Simple right?
Next, try and do the same thing again (after a break,
you don’t want the whole deck fresh in your mind) but
this time without counting the cards you’ve put in. This
is a lot harder as you can’t check back over what you
have already put. If you can do this you definitely
know your stuff.
The next technique is somewhat trickier, but all the
more worthwhile . Get yourself a piece of paper, and
write down each card individually and then branch off
them, listing every card that combos in any way with
them in your deck. This will make you even more aware of
all the potential your deck has, and hopefully will
reassure you in times of need. Look through your deck
for this, it’ll make things a lot easier.
Finally you need to be able to do the above once more
without looking . Another test of your understanding of
your deck.
Well that’s it from me for now guys, I know it’s not
really that long, but believe me this is just the
beginning. I really hope it helps. Till next time
Have a good one guys.
