X ~ Generation

February 17, 2006

Hey guys , how’ve you been? Well I guess we finally made it, - My 5th article in one week !!! And this one is set to be one of the best of the lot, and potentially some of the greatest work I have ever done. Brace yourselves guys, this is the big one.

In every game ever played, there has been a group of people that define their generation. The Greats, the kings. Singularly the most remembered people who are infamous for that certain combo, or for their superb skill as a player. These are the people that we aspire to be like, the people who inspire us to go further, to advance on our skills . These are the people who you fell honoured to have played, the kind that set an example. These players are put on this Earth to be admired and honoured, and , more often than not they achieve their moment in the spotlight. They are remembered for their greatness , and their extreme skill , as well as their profound wisdom.

But how can we match up to these players that seem to be blessed by the Gods themselves, with their firm good looks and the magical ability to turn lead into gold?

Well the first thing you have to think is ‘Well they aren’t that much better looking than me, and most likely they’ve had some kind of surgery. ‘ As well as ‘Well wealth’s all well and good, but I’ll be laughing when the bomb hits’

What im trying to say is that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. You may very well idolise a player
because they are special to you, but lets face it. No one is loved by everyone , nobody’s perfect, and sooner or later they will fall. Still, there are many gifted players out there who aren’t getting the recognition they deserve.

Out there , right now there are players that are beyond the ‘Greats’ who have been cast aside , beyond the charade that these so called ’Greats’ have been thrown into. A player is not the greatest if they are running someone else’s deck. A truly great player MUST have their own deck, as well as being able to adapt to any deck given to them. That is the meaning of a versatile player, and by this , I don’t mean someone who can play any variation of Beatdown successfully. Im talking about the players who can play control, beatdown, combo, insect, spell caster, Warrior and everything in between with the same mastery and effectiveness as every other deck.

Naturally they will have there preferences, but in order to be truly classed as a great player they must be able to adapt. Regardless of their skill with their cyber Dragons, they must have the ability to be a success with a Spell caster strategy, or a Fiend deck. That is the difference between a good player and a great player.

But how do you become a player with such talent? Well the answers quite simple : Diversify.

If you constantly pound out the same strategies over and over, eventually they will become tired, and well known. In order to be constantly on top , you must either re-vamp your existing deck, or make an entire substitution. Of course whether or not you need to do this depends on the success rate of your deck. If, when playing , you deck isn’t just giving you bad allowances, and is in fact getting out dated, its time for a change. Just remember - Don’t try to fix something that isn’t broken.

In order to be a dueling elite, you must use originality as your greatest strength. If you are original you are a skilled duelist , you immediately have an advantage over the opponent playing a net decked ‘winner‘, as you have the vital ability to think outside the box. With that insight, you know what will work, as well as what will not. You are more clued in to the Yugioh dimension than most other players as you know how to draw in the vital components from the entire Yugioh card base, instead of simply specialising in a certain area. You are bestowed with a far wider scope of knowledge, and are free to apply that knowledge to any deck you create.
Access to powerful effects is a necessity in this game , and since yugioh is a non - specific type support giant , you can pull powerful cards from and attribute or type. If you are a good player, you will take advantage of cards that promote mass removal, or cards that generate powerful creatures with great effects. You cant be the best if you don’t use the best, or at the very least have your own way of taking on the best. You have to be clever in the way that there are many cards out there that promote a mass effect for a minimal cost that are over looked by virtually all players. You must obtain these cards and find a way to abuse them, that way you are one step ahead.

Another skill to pull on for greatness is your courage. In order to be the best, you must compete against the best, other wise you are only deluding yourself. You are not the best if you can defeat any given N00b, you must be able to tackle the greater players, as well as rise above them to find new challenges. That way you will always anticipate a new challenge and you can really test yourself.

Once you have accumulated the skill , its time to excel in the ranks. Compete in every tourney, and win as many duels as you can. Build up your points and rise.

From there you must prove yourself as a duelist without even dueling. This is going to be hard, after all how on Earth is that even possible?

Well, a true duelist cant tutor as well as they play. Find yourself an apprentice and let them in on all your acquired info, and teach them in the ways of playing for yourself, and not your piers acceptance.

The final way to accomplish yourself as one of the Extreme duelists of you generation is to pioneer a card , and asses it as your trademark. Your face may be forgotten , but a trademark card will undoubtedly make you be remembered. With your apprentice, and your apprentice’s apprentice your legacy lives on. Those that are truly gifted and unique, live on after they play, in the minds and heart of those who may never have even met them , as well as the people lucky enough to cross them on their road to victory.

Well , I hoped you enjoyed that. Any thoughts about this weeks 5 articles can mail me at
toddyhole@aol.com . I look forward to hearing your responses. If you need me, I’ll be collapsed in the corner……
