Champion Interviews Series
Cyrus Downey - Alabama
9.14.05
note: Pojo.com is not responsible for however long an
interviewee rants
about anything. Please read at own risk.
D.P. -- What is your first and last name?
Cyrus -- Cyrus Downey
D.P. -- How old are you?
Cyrus -- 20
D.P. -- What city and state do you live in?
Cyrus -- Huntsville, AL. Although, I have played
in Tennessee, Florida, Texas, and I'm currently playing in
Colorado until the end of the month.
D.P. -- What decktype do you run and why?
Cyrus -- Dark Magician/Spellcaster. First, I seen
the support that was coming out with it in MFC, then I
realized that almost completely nobody was running it. I'm a
stickler for standing out and I'm good for taking the
underdog. As for the spellcasters, Dark Magician was a
spellcaster, so I might as well make it a full spellcaster
deck. I like to consider it "playing the game like it should
be played".
D.P. -- What's your favorite card and booster and
why?
Cyrus -- Solemn Judgment. The ultimate counter.
People condemn the card for the simple reason they don't
know when to use it. Nine times out of ten, when I play SJ,
the means justify the ends. Duelists these days don't
actually know how to play the game in my opinion. They just
know how to pull of their net-decked combos. Honestly, it
makes me want to vomit.
D.P. -- What do you believe is the biggest problem in
the metagame today?
Cyrus -- 1. Unoriginality
2. Duelists that don't appreciate the game for it's
flexibility and it's hands on approach. All it's about is
"win, win, win".
D.P. -- Next question, what are your thoughts on this
summers tins?
Cyrus -- Meh at best. As much as I enjoy the new
Dark Magician Girl art, I feel that it and Vorse Raider were
a waste of a tin. My personal favorite is Rocket Warrior.
When he attacks it is a built in Waboku for him, and then
decreases the attack AFTER battle damage. Of course he is
open after he attacks, but it makes the widely run Airknight
and Jinzo not as pestering as they once were.
D.P. -- What's the most success you've ever had in a
tournament, and what's your most recent tournament
placement?
Cyrus -- My most successful would be undefeated at
a tournament. I haven't been doing so many tournaments due
to some personal reasons, but my last time I went 2-5 I
believe. That isn't that big of a deal to me though, you win
some and you lose some. I get more entertainment out of
playing people in a friendly manner. They don't feel the
pressure of having to 'win, win, win" and he/she can pit
their originality and skill against my own. It almost makes
me want to cry that a person who can build an impossible
deck and make it work in a friendly setting tosses their
deck to the side to run their Goat Control out of fear of
losing. It's almost as if they would rather lose with a meta
and blame it on "the luck of the draw" rather than losing
with their deck and being told, "I told you so". I do
normally draw a crowd whether I'm winning or losing just
because they haven't seen a Dark Magician deck at all or
they haven't seen one work as well as mine.
D.P. -- So, do you think the new Ban list will help
or hurt the game, and why?
Cyrus -- I only have problems with three cards. We
DO NOT need Dark Hole back. I thought the reason of the ban
lists was to eliminate broken combos and staples. This is
hypocritical on UDE's part. Marauding Captain and Vampire
Lord. In short, thanks UDE for forcing us to build our decks
around what you want us to use. The really sad part: Most
duelists will do it.
