Conundrum: Cyber Bond
September 11, 2006
First off, thank you all for
submitting great decks. I can honestly say that every
single deck was above my expectations and demonstrated some
true deck-building skill. I saw a lot of decks that
demonstrated creativity beyond anything imaginable. I saw a
demonstration of knowledge of rulings and little-known-facts
about YGO. So just to recap here was last week’s challenge:
Construct a deck that:
Runs 3 Time
Wizards!
Has at least 2
Timeaters!
Could be
competitive on the national level.
Timeater
[ Machine / Effect ]
Description:
If this monster destroys a monster on your opponent's side
of the field in battle, your opponent skips his/her next
Main Phase 1.
1900/1700
Time Wizard
[ Spellcaster / Effect ]
Description:
Toss a coin and call Heads or Tails. If you call it right,
your opponent's monsters on the field are destroyed. If you
call it wrong, your own monsters on the field are destroyed
and you lose Life Points equal to half the total ATK of the
destroyed monsters. This card can be used only during your
own turn, once per turn.
500/400
Now before I post the winners
deck I’d like to give an honorable mentions to some great
tech ideas that people tried (and just to give you all an
idea of how creative your fellow duelists are).
-
Dark Sage
-
Fairy Box
-
Sasuke Samurai #4
-
Great Long Nose (If
you skip your first main phase and battle phase you must
end your turn! Genuis!)
-
Mausoleum of the
Emperor
-
Ojama Trio
So without further ado here is the winning
deck:
Hey,
I'm responding to your general request on Pojo.com's
Yu-Gi-Oh TCG page for "Time Control" deck submissions
utilizing three Time Wizard (MRD-065) and at least two
Timeater (PGD-010). The following decklist needs a little
work, I feel--I've not gotten the chance to play-test it
yet, but I'll try to explain the logic I put into it. The
deck tries to juggle a few different themes (coin toss/spellcaster/phase-skipping),
but I'm hoping the final build will be synergistic and
effective in countering more common deck types.
Time Control Decklist-41 Cards
Monsters (19)
3 Time Wizard
2 Timeater
2 Sasuke Samurai #4
2 Black Ptera
2 Apprentice Magician
1 Cybernetic Magician
1 Blowback Dragon
1 Toon Gemini Elf
1 Breaker the Magical Warrior
1 Sangan
1 Spirit Reaper
1 Old Vindictive Magician
1 Magician of Faith
Spells (14)
2 Magical Dimension
2 2nd Coin Toss
1 Graceful Charity
1 Pot of Avarice
1 Last Will
1 Scapegoat
1 Book of Moon
1 Swords of Revealing Light
1 Confiscation
1 Nobleman of Crossout
1 Mystical Space Typhoon
1 Heavy Storm
Traps (8)
3 Thunder of Ruler
2 Ojama Trio
1 Mirror Force
1 Torrential Tribute
1 Ring of Destruction
Time Wizard's effect is obviously risky, requiring a correct
coin toss, so I've included two 2nd Coin Toss to provide a
bit of protection. In order to make 2nd Coin Toss at least
a reasonable draw most of the time, I've included some
additional "coin toss support" monsters-two Sasuke Samurai
#4, and one Blowback Dragon. Yet even with 2nd Coin Toss,
unsuccessful flips will still occur. With this in mind, I
thought at least two Black Ptera might have some potential
in this build, since they will return to the player's hand
even if blasted by the Wizard's effect. They could then be
used for Graceful Charity bate, tribute material for
Timeater or Blowback Dragon, or even Cybernetic Magician's
activation cost. Similarly, Last Will could provide some
protection from a failed Time Wizard toss, allowing a few
options for additional special summons and speed. Pot of
Avarice is a near-must in a deck that can potentially send
all of its field monsters in one turn, and potentially
reusing Sangan, Black Ptera, Magician of Faith or any of the
coin flip monsters is always a good thing.
Since Time Wizard is a Spellcaster, I've included some
strands of related support. Apprentice Magician will add
some speed, searching for our Time Wizards, or Magician of
Faith or Old Vindictive Magician, depending on the
situation. Apprentice has always made for good synergy with
Breaker, as well. Two copies of Magical Dimension provide a
few other options-they create synergy with Black Ptera and
Scapegoat, allow a channel for some needed monster
destruction, and allow for quick drops of Cybernetic
Magician or Toon Gemini Elf or even Time Wizard. I'm not
entirely sure if the Elf will work. I was looking for
another strong Spellcaster to work with Magical Dimension
and initially went with Dark Magician of Chaos, but with the
deck already running a fair number of tribute monsters, I
opted not to.
To support Timeater, I've added two copies of Ojama Trio,
which create easy destruction targets for this monster and
provide a minor source of burn. I originally thought of
running three, but didn't want to push the card count too
far over forty...maybe with a third Timeater, a third Ojama
Trio could work. As for Thunder of Ruler--if you can manage
to activate this following a successful Timeater hit, your
opponent skips straight from the Standby Phase to his/her
End Phase, since a Battle Phase is a prerequisite for a Main
Phase Two. This combo has some potential to disrupt your
opponent and give you more control over the game. Battle
Phase skipping will also allow the deck some more time to
build resources, etc.
I'm hoping to try this deck out soon and further assess
strengths/weaknesses. Any help with the build would be
appreciated!
Thanks,
Alex
No, Alex, thank you! Way to take
advantage of so many elements in one deck but maintain a
serious synergy between all of it. This deck successfully
skips your opponent’s entire turn, consistently and can draw
upon time wizards quickly to create advantage. The use of
Black Ptera here is a great choice but it could be
compromised for a treeborn frog to slim the deck down to
40. Fairy Box could also be teched in for 1 of the thunder
of rulers to further punish your opponent via coin flips.
Otherwise, this deck is awesome and Alex should be
commended.
NEW CONUNDRUM!
So,
by popular request, we’ll be building a Cyber Dragon deck,
but I’m going to make it a little difficult for you guys,
just to inspire a little creativity.
Construct a deck that has:
3 Cyber Dragons
3 Power Bonds
No more than 40 cards
Now this may seem easy, but I
assure you it’s not. Running 3 Power Bonds is a huge
liability so do your research and work hard on what could be
an awesome deck. Send all decks to my e-mail and I’ll post
the winner in a week’s time. Make sure you give a name that
you’d like to be addressed by in the article. I don’t
accept attachments, so please don’t send them. I do accept
creative ideas, so flood my mailbox. Awesome! Fame awaits,
get working on this next deck and Happy Dueling!

P.S. I’m considering going to SJC Boston,
but I don’t know what to run. I’m debating between my Soul
Hat deck, my ChimeraStein deck and my Macro deck. I think
those would be the most anti-Meta, so give me your
opinions. I won’t show you deck lists, but I can give you
ideas as to what my strategies are. Awesome!
