A Watch Pot Never Boils
First off, the idea is actually off the wall. Most people had given up on the Volcanics as they were very powerful but really lacked a reliable win condition. Albarran turned to his Monarchs for the solution to that problem. The Volcanic monsters have high monster destruction in the form of Blaze Accelerator and Wild Fire. The deck was wildly successful, only losing out to a topdecked Banisher of the Radiance in Round 9 and the eventual Champion in the finals. My take on the deck is to tweek it so that it is not truly changed, but to add another win condition to the mix, Frost and Flame Dragon. And before you count, there are 9 FIRE monsters and 3 WATER monsters. Hardly the correct proportion for Frost and Flame. So here are my Tweeks.
-2 Apprentice Magician -1 Bottomless Trap Hole -1 Old Vindicative Magician -1 Raiza the STorm Monarch -1 Book of Moon
+1 Crystal Seer +3 Mobius the Frost Monarch +1 Frost and Flame Dragon +1 Dimension Fusion
These changes to the deck do not change the tricks that it can pull off. 8 tribute monsters is pretty high, but with 2 Soul Exchanges and Wildfire's token in addition to Treeborn Frog and other monsters, it should not be a problem. Mobius was added because of it's WATER attribute as well as the fact that s/t cards seem to be the bane of this deck's existence as well as being a large attacker. Seer was added again because of attribute but also to add some control to the draws that the deck makes. Dimension Fusion was added because of it's ability to summon many monsters as well as comboing with F+F Dragon.
The lost cards I feel were made up for in the additions. Raiza is great, but sometimes you just need more destruction when you are facing down a full spell and trap card field. Apprentice is ok, but I feel it is superfluous at best, especially with so much facedown hate. OVM is just not really needed with so much destruction in the deck. Book of Moon was tough, as I really like it, but I needed to drop a spell or risk monster overload in the decklist. Bottomless was kinda random in the deck, so I removed it.
The "Improved" deck looks like this
Monsters: 24 1 Frost and Flame Dragon 3 Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch3 Mobius the Frost Monarch 2 Raiza the Storm Monarch 1 Card Trooper 1 Treeborn Frog1 Magician of Faith3 Volcanic Rocket 1 Sangan3 Crystal Seer1 Snipe Hunter1 Breaker the Magical Warrior3 Volcanic Shell
Spells: 11 1 Blaze Accelerator 2 Wild Fire 2 Soul Exchange1 Heavy Storm1 Brain Control2 Pot of Avarice1 Dimension Fusion 1 Premature Burial
Traps: 6 1 Torrential Tribute3 Phoenix Wing Wind Blast1 Mirror Force1 The Transmigration Prophecy
Come On In, The Water's Warm
The deck should play pretty close to what it has been for Albarran, except a little bit more explosive. His version tended to get into long drug out slug fests that tested the deck's endurance. This version is able to win fairly quickly due to F+F and Dimension Fusion. Then it also has it's normal win conditions as well. This makes it very unpredictable and hard to play against. I have almost nothing in my side deck that would hurt this deck much at all...
People will definitely side Pulling the Rug against this deck, which is smart as it counters the Monarchs as well as Volcanic Rocket and pretty much shuts the deck down. The way to play around this is to side in more spell and trap hate. Dust Tornado had been working wonders for Zombie Decks as well as being handy against Burn decks. This deck is prone to bad hands, so make sure that it is shuffled THOROUGHLY before you play again. Just like Diamond Dude Turbo, it's pretty quirky, so shuffle well and often.
Well that's it from me today, email me at raptor1k@hotmail.com for any advice, questions or hate mail. If you test out this deck, please let me know so I can wteak it, as my version is a little...testy at times.
Thanks for reading! GZ
