Shining Stars of the Next Format

August 21, 2007

Gotta Get Me One of Those...

The old format is essentially good and gone. People are looking forward to the next few months and how they will adjust their play. After looking closely at the new list, I have a few ideas about cards that could become popular to counter new threats. Some are old friends, and others, not so well known to us.

Enemy Controller
Magic Drain
Creature Swap
Soul Release

Well these are the cards that I think will shine this coming format. Now before you throw your hands up in disgust, hear out my reasoning. You may actually be surprised by what you learn...

I Like Video Games!

Enemy Controller is most everyone's top pick for a star next format. Both Brain Control and Smashing ground are limited and we need a response to face up monsters. This card has that all in spades. This probably the most versatile card ever created. It can block attacks both by stealing a big monster and switching battle positions. It can also be used offensively, to steal a monster for tribute, attack , kill a reaper bt targeting, and switch battle positions on weak ATK monsters. Pretty much my motto in a new format is "If you don't know what it is, throw an Enemy Controller (or a rock) at it.

I Feel Drained...

With so few Spell cards to use effectively, this card becomes even more important. It will relieve them of important spell cards that could be used against you later, or disrupt the flow of an opponent's turn. This will be especially useful in Gadget decks, as they have an almost limitless supply of monsters and your opponent is throwing away their spell cards to make sure that their cards are not negated. In a low hand situation, spell cards are often the out that people look for, so being unable to force them through can mean game for you. Use this card strategically and you can even stop their whole strategy (Demise) from ever taking off at all.

Wanna Trade Your Jinzo for My Sangan?

Creature Swap has always been good. Just now it will work even better, getting you massive swings in tempo as well as removing threats from big monsters. There isn't a whole lot to say about this card, but it has more added potential in Normal Decks. With the addition of Creature Seizure, this makes the more versatile Swap more playable. You can swap away all of your opponent's best cards, giving them things like Mokey Mokey instead. Expect this card to show up in recruiter decks and especially Beast decks, as they can run over their own monsters and claim their effects, namely Giant Rat and Nimble Momonga.

What the **** Was I Thinking! Oh Right, Removing Your Treeborn Frog!

Now the one you have all been waiting for, Soul Release. Everybody scream and yell at me at this point. Better? Now listen up. Removing spells is a good thing. Removing Monsters is generally a good thing. This cards makes Magician of Faith almost useless as well as negating decks that heavily use the graveyard. Which decks use the graveyard? All the top tier decks at this point. Destiny Heroes, Monarchs, and even in some situations Machine Beatdown need the graveyard to work, and unlike Dimensional Fissure you choose which cards are removed, even your own. This can be played in any deck unlike D-Fissure and can disrupt a strategy before it gets off the ground. Anyone afraid of Zombies? Remove them after killing them and they are gone for good. You can even remove your own cards for a massive Dimension Fusion or Return from the Different Dimension. Good, now run to your common box and playtest with 3 of these. So much fun was never had before.

if you wanna talk, trade, flame or ask advice raptor1k@hotmail.com is where I am. I even take advice for articles.

BTW I do know about the mistake in my Banned List Article. Marshmallon is indeed limited to 1.

Thanks for reading, and keep those emails coming!
