Crush the Competition!

April 7, 2008

"You're gonna kill me right?"

I said the above to one of my friends as we bought gold series packs. Guess what I pulled. Yeah, that's right, Crush Card Virus. People are going ape over this card. I have offers on my trade thread of value over 300 dollars, and I just paid my 30 to get it. I figured that a card that incredible deserves it's own article. Crush Card Virus is probably the best trap card in the game, sorry Torrential and Mirror Force, but this one's got ya beat. Here is what it does for those who don't know.

Stats: Trap Card
Card #: GLD1-EN038
Found In:
Yugioh Gold Edition
Description: Tribute 1 DARK monster with 1000 or less ATK. Check all monsters your opponent controls, your opponent's hand, and all cards they draw (until the end of your opponent's 3rd turn after this card's activation), and destroy all monsters with 1500 or more ATK.

The cost is probably one of the greatest in the game, giving up a specific attribute, specific attack monster that has to be on the field in order to work is no small task. Thankfully we do have a great number of cards that not only fit the bill, but work well in the graveyard.

Fodder for the Virus

Sangan-the most obvious choice for the CCV. He has the upper limit of the ATK and the right attribute, and when he is sent to the graveyard you get to search your deck for a monster with 1500 ATK. And did I mention that his is basically an auto-in for every deck? Move over Peten the Dark Clown, Sangan is the boss of CCV.

Light and Darkness Dragon-Huh? But he doesn't have the right ATK, not even close, and he's a LIGHT, not a DARK. Well, L&D is a DARK on the field, and his ATK will get down pretty low after he negates a bunch of stuff, making him the second best target for CCV.

Spirit Reaper-He has the stats, but you really don't want to use this guy unless you have to, as he is more valuable alive than dead.

Mask of Darkness-He doesn't really see play any more, but he can also get the CCV back for more carnage as well as work as tribute fodder for it.

Necro Gardna-I always knew this guy was good! He is seeing some play in many of the local tournaments as well as Regionals in Northern California. He is not only CCV fodder that protects you from an attack, he adjusts the amount of DARK monsters in the grave as well as being searchable to the graveyard by Armageddon Knight and Dark Grepher and to your hand by Sangan and Reinforcements. A good mirror match card for the Dark Armed Dragon Return deck.

DD Crow-Not the greatest choice at all, but Crow can often be dead, so set Crow, set Crush is not that bad of a play.

Destiny Hero Disc Commander-Well ideally you want to discard this guy with Destiny Draw, but CCV is the next best thing to get him in the graveyard for a revival and 2 draws next turn.

Release the Virus

Crush Card Virus is one of the rarest competitive cards in Yu-Gi-Oh!. The Gold Series is severely limited, and the only way to get it beyond that is as an SJC promo. But now, people at small tournaments have to deal with the virus as Joe Little Kid now has a copy and can wipe out all of your pro moves with one flip. Royal Decree, Jinzo and Dark Bribe all deal with that threat. They are pretty easy to side as well, fitting nicely into many different decks, so that once you know your opponent has the virus, you can side in these counters. even Solemn Judgment on a CCV is worth the ridiculous amount of lifepoints, it is that destructive.

Conversely, if you have the virus, congratulations! You are now in possession of one of the best cards ever printed. Now what do you do with it? it just does not make sense to add 5 Dark Mini monsters to your samurai deck in order to play this card. In fact there are many decks that would deem Crush to be too limiting on the deck to be put in. Some Gadget decks, Samurai, Speed Burn and possibly the new OhmTK all do not really need the virus in order to work well. Monarch decks, Destiny Heroes, Diamond Dude Turbo, and Dark Return decks all can use the CCV rather easily. They all play monsters already that fulfill the Virus requirement and can really make use of it. Not so much Diamond Dude Turbo, but I bet that some people out there are playing it in that deck.

Sorry for the short article, a damaged lovelife, a new quarter of school and just life in general are keeping me from writing as much as I would like. My next article will be the results of my Create-A-Card contest, so everyone should look forward to that!

Reach me at raptor1k@hotmail.com. If you can put Yu-Gi-Oh! in your subject line, I can guarantee that it will get to me, as my junk mail is enormous.

Thanx for reading!
