Caught In a Bad Romance

There are few decks out there as versatile as the HERO variants. That is the solid truth. They respond well under pressure from a variety of decks and they boast a rather high range of ATK values which means they can hold their own in battle with decks like Dino-Rabbit without the rabbits and so on. They also are very explosive, able to use Blade Armor Ninja and Miracle Fusion for some serious damage. There are generally three accepted variants on the deck. Fusion Heroes, which use Fusion Gate to fus into many different Heroes in a turn to abuse Absolute Zero. Bubble Beat Heroes which use the amazing Tutors in the deck to get Bubbleman and Stratos backed up by tons of backrow to make a Blade Armor Ninja and go for broke. And City Heroes, which have lost the city part of the deck, but abuse Neos Alius and Super Polymerization in order to keep your opponents monsters off the field. Heroes do have the most support of any other archetype out there, so there are a ton of choices for cool ideas.

Masked Heroes are severely underrated. By far. They offer a second toolbox that allows you to Summon during the Battle Phase, which is always a good thing. With amazing cards like Vapor, Acid and Dian you will generally be able to Summon them easily to make an impact on whatever game you are playing. Goka is alright, but generally not worth a slot in the packed extra deck. Many people have tried to build this deck to make it work (myself included). The insporation for this variant came from my friend Gabe, who has a similar (yet far more tight) variant than I do. This deck uses the abilities of the Hero monsters to the max, able to Summon many, many times per turn and even make huge plays during the Battle Phase.

So here we go!

The deck definitely plays to the strengths of the 6 Quickplay Spells besides MST. Tributing off monsters in response to a Bottomless Trap Hole or Compulsory Evacuation Device to "dodge" the effect and bring out a better monster or remove threats is oftn too good to pass up. I even could not find space for Book of Moon as the line-up for the deck was so tight. i will go over a few of the less conventional choices here.

Wildheart is one of those Heroes that has not aged well. He was never super-popular, more of a tech card to get around pesky Traps. And lo and behold, we are in a format full of pesky traps that your opponent cannot use to stop him. You can "turtle" behind him, setting tons of defense while Wildheart attacks through all of your opponents defense with only book of Moon to stop him. More importantly, he is there to be turned into Masked Hero Dian, a 2800 ATK powerhouse that Special Summons another Hero when he destroys a monster in Battle. You can abuse that card so much with Gemini Spark, Super Polymerization and Mask Change that you can pull out a victory from nowhere. So definitely going in.

Elemental Hero Ocean is here because I am not sold on Ice Edge yet, even though he has been out for a while. He is a WATER type which allows you to toolbox between Vapor or Acid as well as easily make Absolute Zero. Hios effect is also fairly good, able to get back Heroes from the graveyard which is a bit harder to do with this variant on the deck. Bubblemna serves much the same purpose, able to make an easy Blade Armor Ninja as well as goad players into attacking it and going for a surprise Acid during the End or Battle Phases.

Effect Veiler is another card that is one that you kinda have to play. It is so much better since the rules change, and it is also a great way to get to Elemental Hero the Shining without using a Neso Alius. It is also a Tuner which allows you to get to Catastor or Mist Wurm or use some of your Fusions with it. You can really stop some serious plays that your opponent would otherwise beat you with.

Mask Change is a key component of the dewck, allowing you a serious toolbox of 3 different monster that can help you dodge effects as well as get some massive attacks in the battle phase. It is just somehting that can come out of nowhere especially since people don't really think it can work well.

The rest of the deck is fairly standard, allowing for a goodly bit of defense as well as some serious offensive cards for summoning and searching for many different monsters.

That is it for this article, if you have any comments, questions or ideas on decks email me at alarbios@live.com and put YGO in the title so that I don't junk it. It is great to hear from you guys, so put an email together if you want!

Thanks for reading!
