JAELOVE's Smooth Journey

6.09.04  Article 3: Constructing the Warrior Deck

Warriors, along with Fiends and Spellcasters, receive the most support in this game up to the release of Ancient Sanctuary. Filled with numerous powerful monsters that dominate the field, warriors are a good way to overpower and swarm your opponent. This deck type is also highly competitive in tournament play, albeit a bit rarer than during the Legacy of Darkness days. Now then, on to the good stuff.

PURPOSES OF A WARRIOR DECK:

A typical warrior deck will revolve around the use of powerful monsters, coupled with searchers such as reinforcement of the army, to overpower the field and swarm your opponent with threats. As with a fiend deck, many of the "staple" monsters are ignored in a solid warrior deck.

STRENGTHS:

D.D Warrior Lady and Exiled Force are the best monster removal monsters in the game, next to Tribe-Infecting Virus(which depletes your hand and should generally be avoided in a warrior deck). Goblin Attack Force is the strongest 4 star monster in the game. Don Zaloog is arguably the best hand disrupting card in the game. Black Luster Soldier is the most powerful attacking monster in the game (2 attacks). Zombrya the Dark is one of the better monster removing cards in the game (2100 attack, 4 star). Simply put, warriors are so well supported that you can't go wrong with any of them. On top of all that, Marauding Captains prevent other warriors from being attacked!

WEAKNESSES:

Marauding Captains will burn your hand. Warrior users want to run strong monster/magic/trap ratios, because reinforcements and the two searchers (sangan, witch) should provide all the monsters they need. A proper warrior deck must take care not to burn through resources; hand management is crucial.

NOTABLE MONSTERS:

As with my previous article, I'll list a few cards that should see play in this type of deck that aren't commonly used.

LOD-018 Marauding Captain
Warrior/Earth/Effect/3/1200/400
As long as this monster remains face-up on the field, your opponent cannot select another Warrior-Type monster on your side of the field as an attack target. When this monster is Normal Summoned successfully, you can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower Warrior-Type monster from your hand.

This man will provide most of the swarming capabilities. He's restricted to two because his effect is pure swarm; He basically grants a free normal summon with any level 4 monster; the danger rests on putting all of your eggs in one basket and having your resources wiped out in one fell swoop. Take care when using him; his secondary effect of protecting your other warriors is simply icing on the cake.

PSV-094 Goblin Attack Force

Warrior/Earth/Effect/4/2300/0

When this card attacks, it is changed to Defense Position at the end of the Battle Phase. This position cannot be changed during your next turn.

Largely overlooked (rightfully so), this card is a pure beefcake of 2300 attack. Works well with marauding captain, but you still don't want to run more than 1-2 of these bad boys; his effect leaves him very vulnerable the next turn. Basically, Goblin Attack Force should serve as your heavy artillery; you'll rarely get him back so make that 2300 attack count!

LOD-023 Exiled Force
Warrior/Earth/Effect/3/1000/1000
Offer this face-up card on your side of the field as a Tribute to destroy 1 monster on the field. If this card is used for a Tribute Summon or this card is offered as a Tribute due to other cards' effects, this card's effect is not activated.

Another monster largely overlooked in the current game, Exiled Force saw its heyday in the LOD days, where warriors ran amok. Since you want to stay true to your theme, you have no reason not to use him! In conjunction with marauding, he may serve as free monster removal anyways. Plus, warrior decks will want to deal with facedown threats such as fiber jar.

LOD-016 Freed The Matchless General
Warrior/Earth/Effect/5/2300/1700
Negate the effect of a Magic Card that specifically designates this card as a target and destroy it. As long as this card remains face-up on the field, you can add 1 Warrior-Type monster from your Deck to your hand per turn instead of drawing 1 card during your Draw Phase. Your Deck is then shuffled.

A casual, semi-competitive tournament deck should not ignore Freed. He's the matchless general for crying out loud! His effect can come in quite handy; he basically lets you get ANY warrior you want! 2300 attack is decent, and he won't be snatch stealed or change of hearted. Run him because he's true to the theme; in a tournament level warrior deck, he should be replaced.

IOC-086
Mataza the Zapper
Warrior/Earth/3/1300/800
This monster can attack twice during the same Battle Phase. As long as this card remains face-up on the field, control of this card cannot switch.

Mataza is certainly an interesting creature. I only mention him because decks revolving around this guy can be quite powerful. Unfortunately, most warrior decks will have no room for him and his powerful fusion sword murasame blade action. If you want to build a deck revolving around the zapper, go ahead! Know that you heard about his great power first here, at pojo.com!

LON-074

Zombrya the Dark

Warrior/Dark/4/2100/500

Excellent tech for a warrior deck. This superhero will counter berserk gorilla, dark balter the terrible, airknight parshath, vampire lord, and other such monstrosities. Running one isn't a bad idea.

Magics/Traps Lineup for a Warrior Deck:

You'll want to run cards that replenish your hand (Marauding, exiled, and other such monsters will deplete it quick.) Include mirage of nightmare because of its draw power.

Warrior-based cards are the aforementioned Fusion Sword Murasame Blade, which should generally only be run with mataza.

The Warrior Returning Alive is an excellent card for those that want to run Black Luster Soldier, or is just excellent in general.

Reinforcement of the Army keeps the warrior army looking sharp and versatile; you can bring any warrior you want into the fray. Freed and Reinforcement of the Army will provide all the versatility you'll need.

Have you noticed that……. Most of the warriors featured are all EARTH types? Try a few gaia powers; they'll really make you warriors into something to be feared.

Traps should be standard, with Imperial Order, Call of the Haunted, Ring of D., Mirror Force, and as many Wabokus/Magic Drains you need

Any Help for Warriors in Ancient Sanctuary(Newest Yu-Gi-Oh Set)?

In a word, no.

Notes about the next deckfix…. my next fix will be one of your submitted warrior decks, done here on the site. If you want your deck fixed, follow a few simple guidelines.

1. Write out each card name; I don't want abbreviations such as "7 staples", or even HFD for Harpie's Feather Duster and such. No abbreviations; write every card out.

2. Organize your cards in 3 zones; monsters, magics, and traps. After each zone, write how many cards of that type you have.

E-mail me with any decks, questions, and feedback at pojojaelove@yahoo.com .
