Match #2: Shane Scurry Battles Hugo Adame!

Standing in Hugo Adame’s way was Shane Scurry, leader of Team Scoop. Creating many of the playable decks in this format, he has always watched his teammates, Paul Levitin and Carlos Santiago, rocket to glory. This team battle was a chance for the immortal, a figurative beacon of hope in the dim Yu-Gi-Oh scene, to sunder Mr. Adame’s reign as West Coast champion. Without a win, Team East Coast would be in two to zero hole!

As a special bonus section of coverage, if a duelist wins more than one match in a row, I won’t be able to list his Yu-Gi-Oh accomplishments, since those would be taken care of in his first introduction. So here are some interesting facts about Hugo Adame! Standing a diminutive 5’5 with brown eyes, Hugo Adame enjoys the music of N’ Sync (literally), and has a wonderful girlfriend named Anna that plays Yu-Gi-Oh too! She is seeking to be one of the best Yu-Gi-Oh playing females in California, and is well on her way! Anyways, Shane won the dice roll and elected to go first.

Shane Turn One: Shane opened with a set monster and five spell or traps in his zone. Subtract four spell or traps from the board for his actual move, sans exaggerations.

Hugo Turn Two: Carefully deliberating, Hugo decided to set a spell or trap and pass his move.

S3: Shane flips his Gravekeeper’s Spy, a very strong opening with a plus one on the board, and sacrifices for Jinzo, which attacks for 2400.                      8000 to 5600, Shane.

H4: Hugo set a monster and passes.

S5: Shane plays Reinforcement of the Army for Exiled Force. It takes down a Spirit Reaper. Jinzo hits for another 2400, and Hugo is up against the ropes.          8000 3200

H6: Apparently flummoxed by the aggressive style of Paul Levitin, Hugo makes a read that fails him. He plays Brain Control on the Spy, then sacrifices for Airknight Parshath. One Smashing Ground later, the Airknight attacks into a Widespread Ruin. At this point, Hugo either assumes Bottomless Trap Hole, which makes the Airknight hit safe, or a Royal Decree/Return. Because Paul’s deck was running very few defenses, Hugo assumed the same build. This misread costs him dearly. He sets a s/t.     8000 2400

S7: Shane summons a huge Sangan and pokes for another 1000 damage. He then sets a s/t.                              8000 1400

H8: His back against the wall, Hugo plays Snatch Steal on the Sangan, tributing for Mobius. It hits a Bottomless Trap Hole, and the duel is basically sealed up. Shane grabs D.D Warrior Lady with its effect.

S9: Shane summons DDWL, which hits a Bottomless. He then sets a s/t.

H10: Hugo sets one of each and passes.

S11: Shane summons Bazoo, plays Crossout, and attacks for game.

Shane Scurry Scoops Game One in Eleven Turns!

Hugo realized he had to make a few adjustments to his playstyle, and took some time deciding on his side-deck before receiving a kiss on the lips from Anna, by his side, and a kiss from David Simon, on the cheek. But not really the last part.

Hugo Begins Turn One: Hugo opened with one of the strongest plays in the game, setting a spell or trap and summoning Twin-Headed Behemoth. This play makes you almost impervious to a Spirit Reaper or Don Zaloog hit without the opponent losing advantage.

Shane Turn Two: Shane sets one of each.

H3: Sensing some danger, Hugo moves his Behemoth to defense after some pondering and sets a second s/t.

S4: Shane flips D.D Warrior and attacks into a Sakuretsu Armor. He then sets a monster.

H5: Hugo summons Breaker, hitting Saku. Realizing that anything with less than 1600 defense would die to Breaker or Twin, Hugo moves Twin to attack. Breaker hits the face-down D.D Assailant.

S6: Shane plays Premature Burial on D.D Warrior. He then attacks the D.D Assailant into Breaker, and D.D Warrior into the Twin. He then sets a s/t.      7900 6900, Hugo.

H7: Hugo sets a monster.

S8: Shane attacks the face-down Gravekeeper’s Spy, giving Hugo a little bit of breathing room.                        7900 6600.

H9: Hugo plays Dust Tornado at the end phase, hitting Shane’s Call of the Haunted (Shane has Jinzo in hand). This sort of swing is huge, since COTH could have been used later to negate a trap. One Spy is sacrificed for Airknight, which attacks the D.D Assailant to force simplification. He gets a 2 for 1 through this exchange. He then sets a spell or trap.                             7900 6400

S10: Shane draws to five cards in hand. He summons Cyber Dragon, which clears the remaining Spy. He then sets a s/t.

H11: Conserving his resources with numerous cards in hand, Hugo sets a monster.

S12: The Cyber Dragon hits a Sangan, which digs a Spirit Reaper. Shane then sets a monster. Hugo sets one of each and passes.

S14: Shane attacks the face-down Reaper. Hugo passes his next turn, building for some sort of push. Shane then passes as well, ending with 5 cards in hand and a good board position.

H17: Drawing his seventh card, Hugo smashes the Cyber Dragon and passes. With this many resources in both players hands, skill will determine the match-up.

S18: Shane sets a monster and passes. Knowing that Hugo has six cards in hand, he expertly clamps down defenses to force Hugo to commit more resources to the board.

H19: Hugo sets another monster, which is basically what Shane wants to see. He still has six cards in hand, so the next turn will require more extension.

S20: Shane sacrifices his Sangan for a Jinzo. He grabs Exiled Force. It attacks the face-down monster, which is another Spirit Reaper. This move has definitely opened up the game. He then sets another s/t.

H21: Hugo plays Brain Control on Jinzo. He then switches the Reapers to attack mode, and expertly attacks with Jinzo before sacrificing for Mobius, which is the obvious play with two s/ts on Shane’s side. With traps disabled, Jinzo can pull off a two for one on cards like set D.D Warrior Ladies, and even lead to extra advantage with Reaper. Unfortunately, Shane set the Reaper. In main phase 2, Hugo summons Mobius. Shane activates Torrential Tribute. In this exchange, Hugo loses Brain, two Reapers, and Mobius for Shane’s Jinzo, Reaper, Torrential, and Bottomless. He has more cards than Shane, so such simplification is great.        7100 6400

S22: Shane draws his seventh card. He summons Bazoo, using priority to remove Sangan, Jinzo, and Cyber Dragon, telegraphing a potential Return. Sensing this, Hugo opts to take the 2500 damage. Shane then sets two s/t and passes. One has to be Return.

4600 6400

H23: Hugo realizes he must play carefully to escape this matchup. He plays Brain Control, removing 2 Reapers and a Spy to pump it to3400 attack. It attacks into a Widespread, getting a two for one trade out of a relatively bad card. He then passes.

S24: Shane summons Blade Knight. It hits for 1600, and we get the impression Hugo is saving his traps for the inevitable Return. 2200 6400.

H25: Hugo plays Mystical Space Typhoon, hitting Sakuretsu Armor. He plays Premature Burial on Mobius, which then attacks Blade Knight.                1400 5600

S26: Shane needs a Heavy Storm. However, he draws and plays Exiled Force. He then sets a s/t. Hugo passes his next turn.

S28: The game has been a slow one, and Hugo is constantly put in fear of the Return move. However, Shane realizes he needs to clear a few s/ts before committing. He sets a monster.

H29: Hugo Soul Exchanges the face-down monster for a Mobius, which hits the Return.

S30: Shane plays Reinforcement for D.D Assailant. He sets one of each.

H31: Hugo has eight cards in hand and field versus Shane’s 4, but has very low life points. He attacks the D.D Assailant f/d, then sets a third s/t.

Shane sets a second s/t, Hugo passes, Shane passes, and Hugo sets a monster on the 35th turn.

S36: Shane summons Mystic Swordsman LV 2, which hits Dekoichi. At the end phase, Hugo plays Scapegoat.

H37: Hugo then plays Enemy Controller, seizing the Swordsman 2 and sacrificing it for a Mobius. It hits two s/ts, one of which is a second Return! He then attacks for 2400, and the game appears all but over.                         1400 3200

S38: Shane plays Smashing Ground, then sets a s/t. Hugo sets a monster, Shane Crosses it out, then sets a second s/t. The duelists pass the next two turns.

H43: Hugo sets a monster, Shane follows up by setting a monster as well.

H45: Hugo flips his Heavy Storm, hitting his own Dust Tornado and Shane’s Dust Tornado and Sakuretsu Armor. He then plays Swords of Revealing Light, reveleaing Spirit Reaper. He plays Smashing Ground, then flips his own Reaper. It hits for 300 and discards a D.D Warrior Lady. Shane passes again.                              1400 2900

H47: Pressing his advantage, Hugo sacrifices the Reaper for an Airknight. It hits for 1900, Hugo then sets another s/t.            1400 1000

S48: Shane Smashes it, then sets a monster.

H49: Hugo sets a monster and passes. Shane passes as well.

H51: Hugo sacrifices Tsukuyomi for Airknight Parshath. It attacks a Gravekeeper’s Spy, and the crowd groans.                       1300 1000

S52: Shane needs a Heavy Storm. However, he draws a Breaker. He summons it against three s/ts down, Hugo plays Bottomless. He then Smashes the Airknight.

H53: Hugo plays Enemy Controller, losing his Goat, and uses it to take the Spy and attack for game

Hugo ties the score at 1-1!

After that long, grueling duel, both duelists were evenly matched and eager to start game three.

S1: Shane again opened with one monster set and five spell or traps, minus four spell or traps.

H2: Hugo summons Breaker the Magical Warrior, hits a Sakuretsu Armor, then hits a face-down Spirit Reaper. He then plays Hammer Shot, chaining Book of Moon to his own Breaker. - the Hammer Shot/Book of Moon Chain, + Smashing Ground.

S3: D.D Assailant attacks into Sakuretsu Armor.

H4: Hugo summons Sangan, which makes the earlier Sakuretsu Armor make even more sense. The two best monsters in the game team attack for 2600 endurance. Hugo then places a resource into his row, after the recruit step! A warning is issued. Apparently, his last name is Joachim-Hoh.          8000 5400.

S5: Shane sets a monster.

H6: Hugo’s Breaker bounces off the D.D Warrior Lady. He then moves Sangan to defense, and sets a second s/t.

S7: Shane sacrifices DDWL for Jinzo, which hits Breaker for 800.        7200 5400

H8: Hugo sacrifices Sangan for Mobius, hitting a face-down trap that was negated by Jinzo. He then grabs Twin-Headed Behemoth from Sangan. He plays Premature Burial on Breaker the Magical Warrior. Next, Snatch Steal seizes the Jinzo. 4800+1600= 6400. Hugo returns the eight turn victory favor, seizing the match 2-0!

Up next for the East Coast is the immortal Rhymus Lizo!
