JAELOVE's Smooth Journey Match 5: Anthony Alvarado Confronts Wilson Luc! Anthony Alvarado is a Yu-Gi-Oh legend, with a Shonen Jump Championship winner at Charlotte and a top eight placement at the second Gencon Anaheim tournament, held about a month ago. One of the heads of Team Overdose, he has established the B.A.R. with fellow mates Bryan Coronel and recently ousted Rhymus Lizo. He must avenge the defeat of his compatriot against Wilson Luc, in a star-studded match-up that even Starboy, the Yu-Gi-Oh card, would watch! Wilson Luc, on the other hand, has already been introduced. Wait, actually he hasn’t. So I will. With multiple top eight finishes at Shonen Jump Championships, with a winner at SJC Vegas, Mr. Luc has pointed broad brush strokes across the canvas of Yu-Gi-Oh! There. Anthony was playing a basic Warrior deck with copies of Blade Knight, D.D Assailant, and such that worked their ways into the proceedings. Wilson Begins Game One, Turn One: Wilson set a monster and a s/t. In an ominous harbinger of times to come, he did not say “Sure.” Could this mean that things were not quite all right, to set the stage for the “Sure” to come out of his mouth? Danger was definitely in the air. If things are not “Sure”, they’re definitely UN”Sure”. Anthony Turn Two: Capitalizing on the uncertainty evoked by the lack of the sure, Anthony…… set one of each. W3: Wilson tributed his Sangan for a Mobius, running into Torrential Tribute. Wilson got a Mystic Tomato, Anthony got a Spirit Reaper. He then passed. A4: Anthony played the MST, hitting Wilson’s Torrential, then summoned Reaper and hit for 300. It discarded a Tomato. He then set a s/t and passed. 7700 8000 W5: Wilson summoned Exiled Force through Reinforcement of the Army. It hit the Spirit Reaper, then Wilson set a s/t. A6: Anthony’s end phase Dust Tornado took out Wilson’s set Mystical Space Typhoon. He played his own Reinforcement for Don Zaloog, and another card was taken out. This time, it was Spirit Reaper. Anthony then set a s/t. 6300 8000, Anthony. W7: Already two cards down, Wilson had to set a monster and pass. A8: Anthony summoned Spirit Reaper. The Don hit the f/d Reaper, and a main phase 2 Snatch Steal continued the pressure. W9: Wilson summoned D.D Survivor, which attacked into a Sakuretsu Armor. He then had to play a Smashing Ground on Don Zaloog, and the game was over. He ended with one card in hand, signaling a tribute. A10: Anthony attacked with Reaper, discarding D.D Warrior Lady! A definite misplay to go aggressively after the Don Zaloog, and it cost Wilson tremendously. He then set a s/t. 6000 8000 W11: Reduced to topdecking, Wilson set a monster. Anthony moved his monster to defense, Wilson set a s/t. A14: In a brief glimmer of hope, Anthony’s Blade Knight hit a Gravekeeper’s Spy. He took 400 and passed with two cards in hand. 6000 7600 W15: Wilson set another monster and passed. A16: Anthony sacrified his Blade Knight for Mobius, leaving the Reaper in defense. It hit a Return from the Different Dimension. The Mobius cleared a Spy. W17: Wilson set another s/t. A18: Mobius hit another Spy. Anthony then set another s/t. W19: Wilson set his second s/t. A20: Anthony’s end phase Dust Tornado cleared Wilson’s Sakuretsu Armor. He then played Exiled Force to take down the Mystic Tomato. 2400 points of damage went through. 3600 7600 W21: Wilson played Dark Hole. A22: Anthony plays Pot of Avarice, summons D.D Survivor, plays Premature Burial on Mobius the Frost Monarch, and attacks into Call of the Haunted. The Call brings out Wilson’s Mobius. The Mobius’s cancel, then Survivor hits for 1800. 1800 6800 W23: Wilson sets another s/t. A24: Anthony plays RoTA for another Blade Knight. Both monsters attack for game. Anthony Alvarado Takes Game One! Wilson realized he should have said “Sure” after opening, and vowed to not make the mistake again. Wilson Opens Game One: In a mistake that might prove to cost him, Wilson said “Sure” before drawing. This might be taken to mean that the field was fine prior to him ending the turn, but the “Sure” was definitely required before passing the turn back to Anthony. He set a monster and a s/t, and passed it back to Anthony, un”Sure” yet again. Anthony Game Two: Anthony set two s/ts and a monster and passed. W3: Wilson set a second s/t, tried to add a “Sure” to his end phase, but the damage had been done. A4: Anthony and Wilson passed the next five turns skillfully, you can join me a few rows down at section W9. W9: Wilson set a second monster, both hands were full. A10: Anthony set a third s/t, Wilson set a third s/t, Anthony set a fourth s/t, Wilson set a 4th s/t, Anthony set a 5th s/t, and Wilson set a 5th s/t! With both players hands full and unwilling to commit to the board, whoever was going first (and drawing that seventh card in hand first) was at a disadvantage. A16: Anthony made his push. He flipped Sangan, triggering Torrential to take out Wilson’s Kinetic Soldier and Gravekeeper’s Spy. Sangan dug out Spirit Reaper. He then flipped Reinforcement of the Army for Exiled Force, from the field. Next, he flipped his Heavy Storm, destroying two of his own s/ts while hitting Wilson’s Dust Tornado, Book of Moon, Heavy Storm, Sakuretsu Armor, and Call of the Haunted! Spirit Reaper struck for 300, discarding Wilson’s Strike Ninja, and Anthony had just generated huge advantage. This type of expert play did not go unappreciated by the crowd. Unfortunately, in his draw phase prior, Wilson had drawn a second copy of Gravekeeper’s Spy, making it unable for him to flip summon the Spy and push on his read, which was indeed Anthony’s f/d Sangan. Both had the Heavy bluff set, but Anthony fearlessly struck first and took the advantage. AA then set a s/t. 7700 8000, Anthony W17: Wilson still had six cards in hand to Anthony’s more dominant board. He played RoTA for Exiled Force, killing the Spirit Reaper, then set a s/t. A18: Anthony’s next Reaper summon ran into Torrential Tribute. He was still protected by a s/t. W19: Wilson’s fresh Don Zaloog ran headlong into Widespread Ruin. A20: Anthony’s summoned D.D Assailant hit for 1700. He then set a second s/t. 6000 8000 W21: Wilson summoned D.D Survivor, which cleared the Assailant and added a card of advantage to help Wilson climb out of the very deep hole Mr. Alvarado had dug. Wilson then set another s/t. 6000 7900 A22: Anthony summoned Blade Knight, flipped Smashing Ground, then struck for 1600. He set a second s/t. 4400 7900 W23: Wilson played Reinforcement for Strike Ninja, with about six darks in his graveyard. This threat would be huge. Anthony could either choose to try to wait it out, allowing Wilson to climb back into the game, or to use all of his traps and spells to destroy it. Armed with many cards in advantage, he chose the second option. When Strike Ninja hit the field, Anthony played Bottomless. Wilson removed a Spy/Don to keep it alive and passed. A24: Anthony set a monster and passed. W25: Wilson attacked Strike into Blade. Anthony played Widespread, Strike chained removing Strike/DD Survivor. The advantage was now at 2 for 0 and counting. He then set a monster. A26: Anthony summoned Exiled Force, using priority to hit the f/d monster (Tomato). He then flipped Spy, bringing another. He set two s/ts to pump Blade to 2000, then used Smashing Ground. Wilson was out of Darks, and while Ninja got a 3 for 1 advantage, he was still losing the duel. The two Spies hit for 2400, and Blade Knight hit into a Widespread Ruin. 2000 7900 W27: Wilson summoned Breaker the Magical Warrior, which correctly picked out the set Sakuretsu Armor. He then attacked a Spy for 400, and Smashed the other Spy. 2000 7500 A28: Anthony played Snatch Steal on the Breaker, and Smashing the Spy the turn earlier proved to be a good move for Mr. Luc. He was hanging on by a thread after taking 1600 damage. 400 7500 W29: Wilson set one of each and passed. A30: At the end phase, Dust Tornado hit Wilson’s Premature Burial. Anthony then flipped Magician of Faith. Reinforcement of the Army brought out DDWL, which hit Wilson’s down D.D Assailant and removed. Breaker and Magician attacked for game. Anthony Alvarado 2-0’s Wilson Luc in their first meeting ever!
