Because When I Think of the Ocean I Think of Grizzly Bears
November 4, 2005
Alright already.
I
had plenty of time to adjust to my new job and what-not. Its
time to stop being lazy. This edition marks the fourth in a
six part series I began writing.
For
every single attribute in the game a template field searcher
was created. They are all the same: Four stars and 1400
attack with identical effects. Destroy one and you can
search your deck for another monster of the same attribute
of 1500 attack or less and special summon it in attack
position. No tributes are required those of five stars or
more.
How
about that? I just paraphrased what you already knew. Oh
well. Next track.
So
Konami has done some strange things with this game; there’s
no real doubt about that. But why a Grizzly Bear? A Killer
Tomato could definitely be considered dark (and a shameless
licensing rip, but that’s another debate for another day).
Rats are Earth. Angels are light. All of the others make
perfect sense. I would not have picked a Grizzly Bear to
represent the ocean.
I
would have gone with…oh…I don’t know…a friggin fish!
Well…maybe they could have done a Polar Bear. That seems to
fit a lot better and all you would have to do is make him
white. But no. He’s blue. Moving on.
Since we have this nice Grizzly Bear to represent the master
of the ocean lets do what I came here to do. Constructing a
water deck with the power of this field searcher was a lot
easier than I thought it would be. Water has a lot going for
it and CRV gave it even more. Losing Serpent hurts, as I
would have loved to search it with Grizzly, but alas we must
rise above our grief and attempt to press on. So let’s start
the list.
-
Yomi Ship – It’s the
one card that forces so many people to say the shameless
phrase “down with the ship” every time they get the
effect off. It suits it nicely though. Any monster that
destroys it in battle becomes SOL as they die from
drowning; having sunken the only ship for miles. Well
not really. But that’s the effect. It’s like Newdoria,
but without the option of choosing what you destroy. It
only hits the card that kills it.
-
Amphibious Bugroth
Mk-3 – Direct attackers usually have really weak attack.
Not this guy. Get a little field spell out and he can
attack direct for 1700. I believe the direct attacking
is optional, so you can choose to off the field presence
if you so wish.
-
Mermaid Knight – I
like this card. A lot. Most water deck players
completely overlook it though. Why? It can hit for (1700
+ 1700) 3400 directly! That’s an Injection Fairy Lily
that you didn’t have to pay for.
-
Tremendously
Awesome Destructive Presence Of
a Legendary Ending (Hey shut up! I’d love
to see you do better.) – So this little guy was part of
the swarming direction water decks could take with CRV’s
release. Basically having one killed in battle thinned
your deck nicely by getting two to your hand. Also
allows Des Frog to call out his buddies when you summon
him. But here’s the real kicker: with multiply Grizzlies
and three of these guys this is a deck that needs to
pack two Creature Swaps. Something to keep in mind.
-
Gora Turtle – Woah.
Where’d that little stall guy come from? He’s like
Messenger of Peace, but for 1900 attack or higher. And
he is much easier to kill. Ok, maybe not the best idea,
but we’re still thinking. Turn the page.
-
Nightmare Penguin -
The bounce can be useful. When you couple it with the
attack increase and the excellent defense stats you’ve
got quite a versatile card. But if you just want a wall…
-
Neo Aqua Madoor – Yay!
Searchable 3000 defense wall! Shield and Sword beeotch!
The six stars would suck for morphing until you take
into account that this is a water deck. Oh that’s right.
Six minus one is…Balter.
-
Poison Draw Frog –
The wording is so weird. When its face up it can be sent
to the Graveyard from the field by anything and get its
effect, but when its facedown it has to be killed in
battle. If you have a tribute monster in hand and your
opponent just attacked the Grizzly then go ahead and
bring this guy out. You can sack for the tribute (coughMobiuscough)
and get the draw. Pretty awesome for advantage right
there. Its level 2 so you can’t morph for…damn! I keep
forgetting. Water deck. Water deck. We’re doing a water
deck. Yeah, there’s TER for you as well (Plus the draw?
This card pwns!).
-
Cure Mermaid – One of
the sub-themes of a water control build is a one sided
stall. Your former level four monsters are now level
three and slip under your Level Limits and Gravity Binds
without problem. If you’re shamelessly stalling then why
not make it extra annoying with this card. I wouldn’t
put it too high of a priority when you already have
Mermaid Knight and Bugroth available.
This
should be enough to get a decent start. I may not end up
using all of it, but shouldn’t need too much more than that.
I especially see tremendous potential in that Poison Draw
Frog. That plus Salvage means I can get a lot of advantage.
Lets do it control style and lets do it with Levia Dragon –
Daedalus.
2x Levia Dragon – Daedalus
2x Mobius the Frost Monarch
2x Abyss Soldier
3x Mother Grizzly
2x Poison Draw Frog
2x Amphibious Bugroth MK-3
1x Mermaid Knight
2x Yomi Ship
1x Nightmare Penguin
2x Salvage
Dark Hole
3x A Legendary Ocean
Terraforming
Metamorphosis
2x Creature Swap
2x Level Limit Area B
Heavy Storm
Mystical Space Typhoon
Snatch Steal
Premature Burial
Brain Control
Call of the Haunted
Torrential Tribute
Tornado Wall
Robbin Goblin
2x Gravity Bind
So
here’s the rough draft. Imagine your opponent attacking your
Grizzly and you pulling Draw Frog. Then you sack it for
Mobius to nail two face downs. Then you Salvage both the
Frog and Grizzly back. Pretty nice. I think I’ll make it and
take it for a play test sometime soon.
There were many, many other options I chose not to use for
this. Here’s some of the fun guys that did not quite make
the cut:
-
Metallizing Parasite-Lunatite
– Go ahead. I’ll give you guys a minute to go see what
it does. You back yet? Sounds nice, huh? Sounds like it
would suck tremendously to draw into it though. Yeah.
Didn’t make it.
-
Koitsu – Ok. Now I’m
just being stupid. No way would I have ever considered
this guy. But I can see it used in one of two ways:
Cyber End Dragon and a really weird deck idea I had a
viewer send me. His goal was to get it on the field,
Creature Swap it, and attack it with Needle Burrower.
Seemed way too hard to actually do, but would be good
for a laugh.
-
Unshaven Angler – The
water version of this guy is just so unnecessary. ALO
reduces the level of all your monsters so you would
rarely ever need to two-tribute something in the first
place, right? I guess if you really wanted to get out
that Gogiga Gagagigo.
With
that I’ll wrap this up. Just remember to always look for the
weird, cool, and crazy. If you like it, then make it work.
Until next time.
Peace.
