Ilya and I had a
few more duels and it was during our 6th
and 7th duels that I decided to start
logging our duels. The duel listed below is my 6th
ever duel and I will describe the duel as it
happened turn-by-turn, analysing successes and
mistakes.
The Duel began
with some brief hellos I was then asked to choose
which deck to go against. Ilya eventually choose
one himself at random and the duel commenced.
Ilya says:
shuffled
Ilya says:
waiting on you
Paul says:
wanna go first
Ilya says:
sure
Ilya says:
drw 6
Ilya says:
1 mon and 1s/t fd end turn
A common first turn play from
Ilya, I wasn’t certain of either card.
Paul says:
ok I drw
Paul says:
I summon dd crazy beast and atk your fd
A common first turn play is to set a
search monster such as Sangan or Mystic Tomato or
something similar. I decided that if DD Crazy Beast
managed to hit one of these it would remove it from
play instead of sending to it to the graveyard
preventing Ilya to search for another monster. I
also purposefully didn’t set any s/t on the field
before the attack in case Ilya had a response to the
attack that could destroy them. Also by waiting for
the result of what was a risky attack, it allowed me
to set the right type of s/t depending on the
result. However Ilya had protected himself well.
Ilya says:
activate fd trap
Ilya says:
sakuretsu armor
Monster destroyed and now time to put
on the defense so I set a scapegoat. My hand was
poor and this would hopefully bide some time.
Paul says:
no probs
Paul says:
I set 1 s/t and end turn
Ilya says:
drw
Ilya says:
activate swords of revealing light (SORL)
Ilya says:
chain?
Paul says:
nope
Ilya says:
flip summon Cyber Jar
When looking at this move I’m not
sure whether Ilya would’ve been better just letting
DD Crazy Beast’s attack go through. Cyber Jar’s
effect would’ve killed DD Crazy Beast anyway and he
would still have a Sak Armour to use on the turn.
However it would still be my battle phase and
potentially I could’ve drew into 5 level 4 or lower
monsters and Ilya could’ve drawn none. Meaning 1
monster would be destroyed by Sak Armour but the
other 4 could’ve hit his Life Points directly
causing some heavy damage. Even if we had put equal
number of monsters on the field, with it being my
battle phase still I would have the initiative and
could attack which monsters I wanted. By waiting
till his own turn to flip summon Cyber Jar, Ilya had
essentially given himself the initiative. Had he
come out of the Cyber Jar effect poorly he still had
his own turn to set defenses, if he had come out
favourably, he could push for some Life Point
damage. Lesson learned here is that Cyber Jar’s
effect creates an unpredictable field state in which
it is immensely better for you to be able to react
to it before your opponent, therefore saving Cyber
Jar’s effect for your own turn is very beneficial.
There are some exceptions where you may want to use
it on your opponents turn i.e. by utilizing its
monster destruction effect to wipe your opponents
swarmed field.
Ilya says:
chain
Paul says:
no
Ilya says:
my 5 are
Ilya says:
Terraforming (to hand), Bottomless trap hole (to
hand), call of the haunted (to hand), mother grizzly
in atk mode and nightmare penguin in atk mode
Ilya says:
your 5?
Paul says:
my 5 are:
Berserk Gorilla (atk mode)
Smashing Ground (to hand)
Rescue Cat (fd def)
Smashing Ground (to hand)
Ojama Trio (to hand)
It was at this point that I noticed I
had a large hand, remembering there was a limit to
hand size I needed Ilya to clarify something for me.
Paul says:
what's the maximum number of cards I can have in my
hand?
Paul says:
I have 7 at the moment, will I have to discard one?
Ilya says:
1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 until the end of your
turn
Ilya says:
lol
Ilya says:
at the end of YOUR TURN you have to bring your hand
total to 6
Paul says:
end of MY turn so I can keep them for the moment
Ilya says:
yup
Paul says:
thanx
Ilya says:
try to use them during your turn so you wont have to
discard at the end of your turn
Ilya says:
ok
Ilya says:
back to my turn
Paul says:
sure go ahead
Ilya says:
your have gorilla (atk mode), cat (fd def) and a set
s/t . . . .am I forgetting anything?
Paul says:
nope
Ilya says:
ok
Ilya says:
offer as tribute my Nightmare Penguin to tribute
summon (1st and only normal summon of this turn)
Mobius the frost Monarch
Paul says:
ok
Ilya says:
I select your set s/t as a target of Mobius' effect.
Ilya says:
chain?
Paul says:
can't its scapegoat
Paul says:
no room
If I would’ve had 4 available slots I
could’ve chained Scapegoat to Mobius’ effect and
then set up a good defense.
Ilya says:
ok
Ilya says:
the card is destroyed
Ilya says:
next I play terraforming
Ilya says:
I get ALO from deck.
Ilya says:
and play it
Ilya says:
Now . . .. Mobius (2600) attack Berserk Gorilla
Paul says:
ok
Paul says:
8000-7400
Ilya says:
Mother grizzly attacks your fd rescue Cat
Paul says:
ok
Ilya says:
set 2s/t and end turn
Paul says:
ok nice turn, bit lengthy so must take stock
Paul says:
your field is?
Ilya says:
after cyber jar they are all always "stocky"
Ilya says:
A legendary Ocean, Set s/t, Set s/t, S.o.R.L. (1st
turn of activity), Mother grizzly (atk mode 1600),
Mobius the Frost monarch (atk mode 2600)
Paul says:
number of cards in hand?
After having experiences of failure
because of losing field advantage, I needed to know
where I stood. It is always wise after a Cyber Jar
flip or Morphing Jar to just check the state of
play. Asking for Ilya’s hand count I was
determining how many options he may have after my
own move this turn.
Ilya says:
3
Paul says:
ok I drw
Paul says:
activate smashing ground, chain?
Ilya says:
no
Ilya says:
pick either the grizzly or the mobius (DEF 1200 tie)
Paul says:
err mobius
Ilya says:
I knew you'd say that
Paul says:
activate SORL
Paul says:
chain?
Hopefully swords would bide me some
time to get a better hand.
Ilya says:
no
Paul says:
set 1 mon fd and set 1 s/t end turn
Ilya says:
drw
Ilya says:
2 turns remain
Ilya says:
on my SORL
Paul says:
ok
Ilya says:
set one mon fd
Ilya says:
and end turn
Ilya says:
2 on yours
Paul says:
ok I drw
Paul says:
I activate ojama trio, chain?
Ilya says:
yes
Ilya says:
call of the haunted
Ilya says:
for mobius
Ilya says:
not enough space for your ojamas
Paul says:
excellent move
Ilya says:
thanks
Great move from Ilya, not only had he
brought a big monster from the graveyard but he had
also prevented the resolution of Ojama Trio’s
effect, and sending it to the graveyard. I think
after having duels with me and knowing my affinity
to Ojama Trio, every time I set a s/t Ilya would
always be aware that it could be Ojama Trio.
Paul says:
ok activate smashing ground, chain?
Ilya says:
no but you have to pick between mobius and mother
grizzly again
Paul says:
mobius
Ilya says:
mobius and call hit the GY
Paul says:
set 1 mon fd and set 1 s/t and end turn
Due to my poor hand and Ilya’s
dominance on the field all I could do was play
defensively and protect my life points.
Ilya says:
1 left on my SORL
Ilya says:
drw
Ilya says:
your field besides the SORL and set monster is?
Paul says:
there are 2 set mon 1 set s/t and SORL on 2nd turn
Ilya says:
ok
Ilya says:
I flip summon Penguin Soldier
Ilya says:
to return both of your mons to your hand
Ilya says:
chain?
Ilya says:
to effect
Ilya says:
or response to flip?
Paul says:
no
Ilya says:
ok
Ilya says:
thats enough for me for now
Ilya says:
your go
In a single flip summon Ilya had
further increased his advantage on the field, I was
very much on the back foot, never underestimate the
power of bounce cards.
Paul says:
ok I drw
Paul says:
set one mon fd and end turn
I was having to do everything
possible to defend. Things were a little cagey but
knowing Ilya this wouldn’t last for long.
Ilya says:
drw
Ilya says:
my SORL is over
Paul says:
nice to know
Ilya says:
activate heavy storm
Ilya says:
destroying my ALO and set bottomless trap hole
Ilya says:
chain?
Paul says:
nope
Ilya says:
and what were your cards?
Paul says:
SORL and Spiritual Earth Art
If I would’ve had an Earth monster on
the field I could’ve chained Spiritual Earth Art and
brought back a Berserk Gorilla from my graveyard but
unfortunately my set monster was a dark monster.
I’d only set this trap as a bluff to put Ilya off
from attacking me. It had worked on the last turn
but now Ilya had Heavy Storm.
Ilya says:
k
Ilya says:
activate ALO
Ilya says:
I have 2 in this deck
Ilya says:
normal summon Hydrogeddon
Ilya says:
Hydrogeddon attacks your fd monster
Paul says:
you flipped a cat of ill omen
Ilya says:
ok
Ilya says:
what is the trap you put on top of your deck after
you shuffle it?
Paul says:
ojama trio
Ilya says:
ok
Paul says:
cat goes to gy
Ilya says:
another Hydrogeddon gets to come out from my deck
Ilya says:
hydrogeddon (1800) + Mother Grizzly (1600) + penguin
soldier (950) = 4250
Paul says:
8000-3150
Ilya says:
end turn
Paul says:
nice move
Paul says:
I drw
Paul says:
your field has 4 monsters correct?
Ilya says:
yup
Ilya says:
and ALO
Paul says:
Excellent
It was at this point that I had
realized a combo that could potentially even up the
field. Although I doubted I could totally swing it
back in my favour I at least could even it up. Plus
at this point if I didn’t regain some sort of
balance on the field then it was likely I would lose
next turn.
Paul says:
I activate prem burial
Ilya says:
pay 800
Paul says:
bringing back my rescue cat
Ilya says:
uh oh
Paul says:
use its effect to special summon 2 Gyaku-Gire Pandas
to the field both atks 2800
Paul says:
ok I summon another GGP from my hand (my normal
summon this turn)
Paul says:
ok lets do this step by step
Paul says:
first atk on your first hydro 2800>1800=1000
second atk on second hydro 2300>1800=500
third atk on penguin soldier 1800>950=850
Total damage = 2350 agree?
Ilya says:
yes
Ilya says:
nice math
Ilya says:
you left my mother grizzly
Paul says:
I know
Ilya says:
well thought out
I had left the Mother Grizzly as it
would’ve went against my aim of leveling off the
field. By destroying it I may have reduced Ilya’s
life points by more, but he would’ve been able to
search for another monster and would have had better
field advantage over me, after my special summoned
Gyaku-Gire Pandas had left the field.
Paul says:
I set 1 s/t and end turn, 2 GGP are sent to GY as
per rescue cats effect
Ilya says:
ok
Ilya says:
drw
Ilya says:
set s/t
Paul says:
activate ojama trio before you set the s/t
Paul says:
damn should learn how to type faster
Ilya says:
its quite alright
Ilya says:
anyway you can activate it all during my turn
Ilya says:
so if you want to
Ilya says:
go right ahead
Paul says:
I think I will then
Ilya says:
ok
Paul says:
GGP now at 2800
My hope was that with GGP at 2800
Ilya would need a spell or trap to be able to remove
it. I doubted he would have enough raw attack power
to destroy it through battle. So even if he were to
have more monsters on the field as me. I would buy
myself another turn and see what my draw could bring
that could turn the duel around. However Ilya had
just got the card he needed.
Ilya says:
I still have one slot empty
Paul says:
yep
Ilya says:
well it isn't gonna be because I'm taking control of
it
Ilya says:
activate snatch steal
Ilya says:
you my friend are standing on a clean field are you
not?
Paul says:
yes
Paul says:
GGP’s atk is reduced back to 800
Ilya says:
and your life points are below 2400?
Paul says:
score is 5650-2350
Ilya says:
I win
Paul says:
you sure do
Ilya says:
Mother grizzly (1600) + Gyaku Gire Panda ( 800)
attack for duel
So there we have
it a break down of one of my duels against Ilya.
Now before I get a load of emails claiming how I
made this stupid mistake and that stupid mistake.
Please take into context where I am coming from.
This was my 6th ever duel, and at the
present I only have 25+ duels worth of experience to
be able to analyse this duel. I will no doubt have
made some mistakes which is fine, and I do want to
know what they are so that I can improve my only
request is no bashing and no flaming.
I want your help but I won’t tolerate abuse.
So hopefully now,
you newbies can see my thought processes and
hopefully they will help you in your own duelling
decisions. Although I lost the duel I learned a lot
particularly in regards to the strategy behind using
a card like Cyber Jar. Another important thing
during the duel was not to give up. Although the
Rescue Cat combo didn’t work, if Ilya had not got
the card he did, he would’ve had to put on some sort
of defense. This could potentially have turned the
duel around in my favour. So I would say to all
newbies don’t give up ever, play right until the end
of every duel, as you never know what might happen.
