All’s Fair in Love and Duel
Monsters 5.17.04 This one goes out to all the ladies out there. Well, that’s it. Once this article is posted, I will officially be a college graduate. But with that, comes the added responsibility of having to be a part of the “real world.” That means get a job, move out on my own, and ultimately, find love. But where does the Duelist go to find love? Yu-Gi-Oh is primarily played by young men, but I have met several female duelists out there. For the most part, Duelists tend to gather only once a week or so, competing in local tournaments or free-play events at card shops. But is there any other sort of Dueling social scene? Is there a dance club called “The Duelist Kingdom”? Have people met in the dueling arena, only to end up tying the knot at a Yu-Gi-Oh themed wedding? Perhaps, it is time. After I wrote my first article, I received an email from a female fan who related to what I had written about (see “Coming Out of the Yu-Gi-Oh Closet”), and in her email, she asked me to check out her fan site. I, too, have made many a fan site of the years, so naturally, I checked it out. Her page was dedicated to the women of Yu-Gi-Oh – both characters and cards alike – pictures of Injection Fairy Lily adorned most every corner. Her tips and advice were good, and her salute to the women of the anime/game was really good. I emailed her back, saying how much I liked her site, and because her site was aimed at female players, I jokingly added that she and I should start up a Yu-Gi-Oh Dating Service/Site. She never replied – guess I scared her off. So, I’ll pass along the idea to my readers. What if someone were to create a dating service, whose goal was to set up Duelists with other Duelists? People always want to meet other people with similar interests, and Yu-Gi-Oh is quite a popular interest. But think of the fun possibilities. Rather than being at a bar and offering to buy someone a drink, you go over to someone you think is attractive and challenge him/her to a duel. It’ll sort of be like that action hero Mai beat during the Battle City tournament, the one who proposed marriage if he were to win the duel. How romantic. Then think of the long term stuff. Let’s say people get together and end up getting married down the line. I’d love to see someone dressed as Pegasus officiating and performing the ceremony. With this Ring of Destruction, I thee wed…With this Ring of Magnetism, I thee wed…And think about it – if the dating service really kicks off and does well, maybe there could be a mansion, similar to that of the Playboy Mansion, but for people of all ages to come and duel. Or how about televised game shows, like The Dueling Game. Ahh, love. All joking aside for a moment, I’d actually like to hear other people’s stories about love and Yu-Gi-Oh. If you’ve met that special someone through the game, email me and let me know. If I get enough good stories, maybe I’ll do a follow-up article, like the way Maury Povich follows up with his stories. Mine will just be in better taste. If you do email me and would like to be included in the article (don’t worry, I’ll keep it anonymous if you wish), please indicate so in the email (not worth getting sued over, believe me). So, until next time… ::big Dating Game style kiss:: …goodnight!
