So while I was away at college, I did not have the opportunity to duel, well, ever. I was forced to duel AI opponents, courtesy of Game Boy Advance and the Yu-Gi-Oh! PC games. But I really lacked that all-too-essential human interaction of the game. Of course, it wasn’t until after I came home that I learned that there is another way. In an email someone sent me, they told me of an online Java based dueling arena. I downloaded the program, and wow – a whole new world of dueling opened up for me. Access to every card, chat with other players, everything a Duelist could ever want…except for, you know, dueling! Out of the thirty or so games I tried to play, one worked. One. I had hoped to be able to duel players from around the world any time I wanted to. My dreams have been dashed. Now I can’t duel each and every one of my readers online. Boo. On top of that, there was no instruction on how to use the program, so I kept setting traps and spells and stuff face up on the field, and my opponent didn’t even bother to tell me how to do it properly until a little while into the game. Boo again. So I’ve decided I’m going to stick with low-tech – IM dueling. A good friend of mine suggested a while ago that he and I attempt to duel via Instant Messenger. Years ago, he and I ran an AOL RPG for DBZ (enough abbreviations for you?), and since we made the game, we could control the rules and whatnot. But for dueling, there was the whole issue of honesty and lack of funny comments to each other. It never happened. Then I got yet another email from a reader, and she suggested that we try to duel online. Alright, I figured what the heck. I’ve got to say, I had a lot of fun. Sure, she whooped me good because I had never dueled like this before (and she had an awesome Amazon deck), but it was a whole new way to play. It was like people who play chess via letters (what’s a letter? – kidding), but faster than you can say “knight to e7”. It was great. She even offered to have me join an online duelist league. I have not accepted yet, but I’m keeping my options open (I feel like a high school basketball player being courted by the NBA). But the thing is, can we be trusted? There is so much pride about winning in any game, and Yu-Gi-Oh! is no exception. People like to win, end of story. But can each and every one of us be true to the spirit of the game? If not, then we’re no better than a room full of Bandit Keiths. We should be a world full of Yugis! So here’s what I want everyone to do. Raise your right hand….come on, don’t be embarrassed…., place your left hand over your deck, and repeat after me: I, (your name here), do promise to uphold the sanctity and honesty of Yu-Gi-Oh!, and I swear on my (deck type you are currently playing) deck that I will not cheat at both face-to-face and online Dueling, so help me God Cards. And if I break this solemn promise, may the Spirit of the Millennium items come to me in the middle of the night, and hereby banish me to the Shadow Realm for all eternity. Amen….and awomen…. Two quick side notes – First, I am looking at making a new deck – something fun and relatively cost efficient. If you’d like, please send your suggestions to doonpook@yahoo.com. I will not play Chaos, Hand Disruption, or Deck Disruption, so don’t bother. Two, if you’d like to duel me via AIM, you can do so on my new screen name “PojoPook” – please understand I can only duel one person at a time, so if I’m on and you want to play, please be patient. And I’ll only play people who have taken the oath.
