Pook's Place This week is the Jewish holiday of Passover. For those of you not familiar with the holiday, here’s a quick rundown. Passover celebrates when the Jews left Egypt to wander the desert for 40 years. They left after Moses went up against the evil Pharaoh by unleashing the 10 plagues. The Red Sea parted, yadda yadda yadda, no bread for a week. There you have it – 5 years of Hebrew School summed up in one succinct paragraph. Now I am not a religious person by any means, but I do know that getting together with family can be important. That’s why, this past weekend, I went to a family member’s house to have Passover dinner with the family. And while I was there, I got to duel. That’s right. Nothing says family occasion like playing some Yu-Gi-Oh. My 2nd or 3rd or whatever little cousin had brought his cards with him. He had about 120 or so, some not bad, mostly in little-kid condition (meaning they were priceless to him, but the cards were in bad shape). So, of course, the topic of my writing was brought up and suddenly all eyes were on me to show off my dueling skills. So I threw together a quick 40 card deck (as did another cousin) and we proceeded to duel after dinner. It was very fun. But as I was playing, I realized that there was an enormous amount of irony to the situation. Here we were, a Jewish family, gathered around watching and playing Yu-Gi-Oh, a game based on the Egyptian culture that our ancestors had escaped from. Pretty deep, huh? Sure, we weren’t witnessing frogs fall from the sky or wandering the desert or anything, but here we were, getting in touch with our roots. No one else but me seemed to realize this, and I didn’t want to be a mood-killer, so I just shut up and dueled. But who knows – maybe, on some level, I was channeling a past life or an ancestor or something like that. It made me think of the whole dual personality theme of the anime, and how this culture was transcending time. To me, it was pretty cool. Not really much more I can say about the subject, just thought that it was a cute story. But remember this, folks – the family that duels together, stays together. And join me next time for the Pook’s Place One Year Anniversary and 50th Column Extravaganza! It’s going to be a blast! Happy dueling!
