YuGiOh
Columbus Ohio
Regional
Dublin, OH
Well I can easily
say that this
regional was
everything Boston
wasn't. The
tournament ran
smoothly, easily
going through 8
rounds and then the
top 8 (11
total) getting
everyone out of
there by 8:00.
The crowd reminded
me of how Yu-Gi-Oh
players are suppose
to be. People
enthusiastic about
the game, wanting to
learn new tech (I
saw an E-Hero
Bubbleman Deck
utilizing all
spell/trap burn
cards), helping each
other, and keeping
order when either
winning or losing.
No fights, no
arguments, no
food/drink on the
table.
If any of the judges
who were there are
reading this,
congrats, for the
whole event was well
ran and simply but
DIVINE (my word of
the day:P).
Questions were
answered hastily and
the overall regional
was well done.
248 were in
attendance, it was 8
rounds of
Swiss/Cutting to the
top 8. Upon
arriving I had to
make a decision
about what deck to
use and I had to get
over the fact I was
play testing all
night (Literally 1
hour of sleep if
that.) I was
feeling a variant of
my strike ninja deck
I was using the
night before and
decided it was a
good pick.
Thus I present to
you my Columbus
Regional deck...

Let me explain a few
things first. The
inclusion of Old
Vindictive Magician
in my side deck was
to counter
Hydrogeedon decks.
Newdoria is superior
in my opinion, but
burn decks, hydro
decks, slow decks,
and even stein decks
have issues dealing
with Old
Vindictive. King
Tiger is one of the
best monsters in
this format. The
ability to override
priority, he shuts
Exiled Force, Cyber
Stein, and almost
all searchers down
on the spot. That
means no Rat
control, no
Injection Fairy
Lily, no Treeborn
Frog.
Dust Tornado and
Decree were sided
for Stein, Burn,
Macro Cosmos, etc.
The other main
stream cards were
sided for either
extra synergy or to
fake out nervous
players:P
..................................................................
(sorry if the games
are not as in depth
as most. I was
tired and really
only focusing on the
moment, as nerdy as
that sounds!)
Game One
My first opponent
was a little kid.
Somewhere between
the ages of 6-8 and
I was thinking (not
again). See, I want
all of you to
understand that age
has nothing to do
with dueling
skills. Some of the
best players I have
met have been
younger than 10.
I've been beaten by
little guys before
and it really does a
number on your
pride:P Then I
found out I
was pitted against
an Elemental Hero
Deck, complete with
polymerization and
the whole gang.
1-0
Game Two
I moved from table
100 and something to
table 3.
This game was
interesting. My
opponent was running
some burn/fiend
deck. The first
game I had set a
monster and a s/t.
He set a monster, a
s/t, and
activated Wave-Motion
Cannon. I was
thinking ****, cause
I run my s/t removal
in my side deck. I
drew for my turn,
flipped a dekoichi,
drew, tribute off
for Zaborg and hit
him directly. He
summoned a Goblin
Elite Attack Force
and a I bottomless
trap holed. He then
smashing grounded my
Zaborg and ended. I
set a s/t, summoned
Sangan and hit him
again. He drew for
his turn, Summoned
Slate Warrior and
hit my Sangan.
Sangan fetched me
Frog. He ended. I
drew for my
turn, summoned Cyber
Dragon and my frog.
(Now this over
extension was
basically me
figuring the
facedown s/t was not
a bottomless or a
sakuretsu armor.
This is due to the
fact he took 2400
damage from a Zaborg.
If it was monster
removal he would of
chained to the
summoning or
attack.) I then
creature swapped him
my frog, and the
game was basically
me beating him with
Slate Warrior and
Cyber Dragon. The
second game was more
or less the same
thing. He had
activated a
wave-motion cannon
and summoned Dark
Necrofear. He used
Return from the
Different Dimension
to save himself from
an attack. But I
was aggressive an
won.
2-0
Game Three
I was now at table
16.
Now this was a game
I should of lost. I
was playing a
warrior deck. I won
the first game, he
won the second
(cause I was a moron
and got ninja from
my deck with
reinforcements of
the army instead of
D.D. Assailant
(which would of put
me 1 up instead of 1
down in card
advantage)). And
the third game I was
in control of the
field/hand was at a
mere 1400 LP to his
3000 and something.
Well I had heavy
storm and was going
to go for game. I
had Strike Ninja,
Zaborg, and a Mystic
Tomato on the
field. He chained
Ring of Destruction
and targeted my
Ninja! So I removed
and won. I was
happy for the win,
mad for technically
losing (cause I had
game 2 and made a
mistake), mad that
he made a mistake,
and happy to see
that I am not the
only person to make
mistakes that cost
me games.
3-0
Game Four
I was at table 3
again
I remember playing
against some kinda
of machine deck. He
had used a Dekoichi
and a Cyber Phoenix
to gain an early
game advantage on
me. Morphing Jar
brought me back in
the game. I believe
Strike Ninja and
Zaborg finished him
off the first
round. Round two I
lost as a result of
all his draw power.
Round three was
quick, I had moved
an extra My Body as
a Shield and my King
Tigers (TAKE THAT
CYBER PHOENIX) into
the main deck. I
can't recall
anything that
happened really, but
I remember my win
being the result of
a Confiscation on
the first move,
Nobleman of Crossout
on his facedown
Magician of Faith
(thus making his in
hand Pot of Avarice
useless and his
G-Yard spells dead)
and a Zaborg popping
a Cyber Dragon or
something.) I won
and moved on.
4-0
Game Five
This is where the
regional got
interesting. The
man I was playing
against was running
Hydrogeedon
in his deck. I
believe a member of
team No Limit
(correct me if I am
wrong) upon his
first move he
swarmed me with a
Cyber Dragon and a
Hydrogeedon. Hydro
attacked my facedown
Newdoria, I
targeted Cyber
Dragon (this is why
Old Vindictive is
better against this
beastly Dinosaur)
and took 1600. I do
not remember much
else about this
duel. I was able to
come back as a
result of Strike
Ninja smacking the
Hydros (thank you
dead darks) that
were in my graveyard
from some moves
before. One of the
reasons I choose to
run Ninja is because
when he works he is
like a Greek God.
Almighty and
powerful. Capable
of removing himself
on your opponents
turn, thus forcing
their in hand Cyber
Dragon to be useless
or any form of
monster removal a
waste. To top it
off, to use a
sakuretsu armor or
Mirror Force on him,
just to see it go
away hurts
mentally. Some
times you just can't
take that 1700
damage or lose your
monster. Ninja says
HA...
Thus the first round
was mine. Some side
decking occurred and
we began game 2. I
went first, setting
a Bottomless Trap
Hole and a
Dekoichi. He drew,
used a MST, summoned
Cyber Dragon and
an Exiled
Force, activated
Last Will, Tribute
off to kill my
facedown train,
summoned Cyber
Stein, Cyber Twin,
Good Game.
Round three was
kinda like the first
round. I had a
good opening hand.
I had summoned a
Cyber Dragon only to
see it fall down a
hole. I then set a
sangan. He drew and
summoned Cyber
Dragon. I got
frog. Next turn I
summoned Frog and
activated
Creature swap to
take dragon. But he
chained enemy
controller to give
me back my own
frog.
I felt so sorry for
my confused frog. I
ended with a 100
attack position
frog. He somehow
got a D.D. Warrior
Lady and hit frog,
remove from game,
ouch. I say this
because I had 2 in
hand Zaborg. 2 in
hand monsters were
now a liability. I
ended up with the
advantage late game,
but he had more LP
(I only had
1900) and he had 2
in hand cards. I
had a clear field
and a spirit
reaper. But I
decided to not go
for it and set my
reaper and a my body
as a shield. He set
a monster on his
turn and ended.
I tribute off my
reaper for zaborg,
hit for 2400. His
next turn he drew,
set a monster and
ended. I drew,
tribute Zaborg off
for Zaborg and hit
for game. I later
found out he had 2
Goldds in hand. I
was also one turn
away from facing a
graceful and 2 goldd
dump.
5-0
Round Six
Table 3, Again
This game was
definitely an eye
opener. My
opponent, Cory
Crooks, which will
have a feature
article later in the
week, was running
a Macro Cosmos
Deck. I had just
witnessed my friend
lose to him the
round earlier and
was impressed with
his decision. The
first game I was
owned. O-W-N-E-D,
owned. Obviously,
anything that will
not allow me to get
my monsters in the
graveyard hurts.
Strike Ninja becomes
a Vanilla 1700,
Newdoria a 1200
Vanilla, etc. I had
a huge early game
lead (2 turns) but
lost it fast as
dimensional fissure
hit the field.
Before I knew it I
was hit with three
D. D. Survivor,
OUCH.
The second game I
side-decked 2x
Decree (shut down
Solemn Judgement and
Macro), 2x Dust
Tornado (DUH), 2x
King Tiger Wanghu,
my apprentice
magician, and My
Body as a Shield. I
wanted to win fast.
The major issue with
combo orientated
decks is speed. If
you hit fast and
hard, they lose.
Well my opening hand
was good. I had a
bunch of s/t
removal, a cyber
dragon. and
a Breaker I think.
The game was over
fast in my favor.
Round three was
pretty quick too. I
had King Tiger on
the field, thus his
D.D. Scout Plane was
useless. I also
drew 2x Dust Tornado
and a MST. Thus he
never had a chance
to get the combo
going.
6-0
Round Seven
Table 1
Me against Cody
Miller, Yugi
incarnate. There
was nothing much
about this game. I
was Confiscated on
his first move. He
had the answer to
everything,
he countered every
move, he was Yugi
for the day. I was
2-0 in about 6
minutes. I had
horrible hands. The
second game I drew
into 2x Royal
Decree, etc. You
all know the story.
6-1
Round Eight
I was now at table
7, facing off
against Brian
Craig,a man I had
play tested against
all night. He is an
ok guy when your not
playing Yu-Gi-Oh,
but during the game
he is the kind of
guy who attacks a
Treeborn Frog with a
Cyber Dragon (for 3
turns he did this)
and makes you put it
in your graveyard
even when you have
no S/T cards on the
field, cause you may
forget to bring it
back. Correct game
play, but real
annoying. Even more
annoying to listen
to him whine about
how you top-deck
everything you need
(not true). Blah,
blah, etc. I was
happy cause I knew
his deck inside and
out. He had no idea
what I was playing,
cause as mentioned I
built the deck on
the spot. He whined
about me bringing my
frog back in attack
position. (When I
bring the frog back
it is always in def.
position (habit)
but I declare the
position upon
confirming it. He
was mad because I
brought the frog
back in defense. I
kept telling him it
was not confirmed.
He whined some
more. Called a
judge over on me, we
both got warning,
etc.) The reason my
frog was in the game
to begin with was
because I had
creature swapped it
for his facedown
Mystic Tomato. Upon
realizing the poor
move I set a
bottomless Trap
Hole. He tribute my
Frog off for his own
Zaborg (apparently
low on monsters,
cause you never do
that in a good
position) killed his
plant and lost his
Zaborg. My bad call
turned out to be
good for me. A few
turns pass with me
summoning nothing
but frog, to shut
down a Cyber
Dragon. After 3
moves of the frog
flying onto the
field I set my
Twin-Headed
Behemoth. (I had
to make him think I
was about to flip
Vindictive) He
summoned Exiled
Force and hit my
Facedown Dragon (YAY
FOR ME). I stall a
few more turns and
then...
I Nobleman of
Crossout his
facedown Faith,
Creature Swap for
his Cyber Dragon
(stupid
bully monster I
thought, hitting my
frog for no
reason) and from
there the game was
set. I can not
remember if the game
was 2 or 3 rounds.
But I do know that I
won and was happy.
The night before he
was trash talking
me, telling me that
he'd wanted to face
me in the regional
for an easy win,
etc. Well I got the
easy win and moved
onto top 8.
7-1
Out of 248 people, I
was in 2nd place.
My first top 8 match
was against the
Hydro guy. It was
nice to see him
again. I can not
remember his name,
but he's one of, if
not the nicest guys
I have ever met.
Nonetheless 3 rounds
and I move onto top
4.
This was a new guy.
I was not happy
about playing him
either. S-L-O-W. We
had games lasting
over 20 minutes
cause he took 6
minutes to discard
with graceful. His
first round top
8 opponent was
asleep, seriously,
no lie. I think his
strategy
was to bore the
opponent to
submission;P To top
it off, he was a
rule shark.
Apparently I do not
know the rules of
this, that, etc. I
took some time
side-decking for
game 2, round one
was easily mine
(thank you Ninja),
and he pointed out
to me I only had 3
minutes. I laughed
cause he is the one
with a 6 minute
graceful. I lost
game 2 because of a
mistake with my
confiscation. I
picked a Zaborg over
Pot of Avarice. It
was not really a
mistake, I was
trying to end the
game fast but he
drew into other
stuff and got
avarice off. But
round three was mine
and he lost. I was
up massive
advantage, once
again Ninja and his
dark Pal's pulled
through. I had been
poking him all game
with a Dekocihi and
a sangan. Turns
past and he has no
cards (thank you
reaper). Reaper
eventually dies.
Some more monster
exchanges go on. He
used Premature
Burial, takes
himself down
to 1700. I
bottomless Trap
Hole. I have no
monsters, draw a
mirror force and set
it. He top decks
and sets a s/t. I
draw my other
Ninja. Summon and
attack for game.
But he chains Ring
of Destruction. Not
wanting to give him
the satisfaction of
killing my Ninja I
remove it from
play. Next turn he
draws and scoops.
(I had a facedown
Mirror Force, Ring
of Destruction, and
2-3 in hand cards to
his top deck. I
like Strike Ninja)
Top 2
Guess what, I played
against Cody
Miller, the kid who
beat me in the
Swiss. Nothing
changes here, he
owns me again in a
similar fashion and
moves onto be the
champ. Going
undefeated with a
jank deck that he
too was surprised
ran so well. But
coincidence or not,
he was running a
random Strike
Ninja. Strike Ninja
made his way into
both our decks with
good reason.
Thus this regional
once again
demonstrated my
faith in My Body as
a Shield (EVEN WHEN
YOU DON'T USE IT, IT
HELPS. It also
frustrates Exiled
Force for fun) The
more aggressive you
are the better.
Ninja is a killer
monster, deserving
of his Ultra Rare
status. The
monarch decks
running 4 and 5
tributes are slow.
Working only about
60 percent of the
time on average,
they fall to
aggression. And if
anything, skill and
luck are hard to
beat.
(I hate you Cody:P)
But I guess 2nd out
of 248 is not bad.
I got a mat, I-Pod,
24packs of POTD, a
POTD T-Shirt, and a
backpack.
Overall a great
experience.
If anyone needs
help, wants to talk,
or has a crazy deck
idea..
I can
be contacted at
Tebezu@gmail.com
Until next time...
I'll be thinking of
a catch phrase:P
