Darkness Approaches
July 11, 2006

The Mist approaches and the night howls.  Terrible fortune awaits all who believe the dark offers no threat.  Red orbs follow you, searching.....

The ground shakes yet the attack comes from the sky.  A dragon, once forgotten has come to take back its claim .......................................

I have realized that in my short time as a feature writer I have never written an article on the dealings of Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon.  As far as monsters and effects go, buy the usual cast of opinion he is a fierce monster who only tends to find his way into peoples collections due to his awesome art.  Yet the monster in terms of playability is far greater than achieving the win condition offered by FINAL....

While searching through my e-mails I came across a deck sent to me by Dan.  My self being an aficionado of un-playable decks, liked Dan's Take on it. Let me demonstrate...........

What we got here is a deck dedicated to the REDD approach.  Massive numbers of battle searchers which indirectly allow for field stability, thus protecting hand disruption.  Plus the decks dedicated blend of traditional search targets and dragon support allow for a never ending flow of tribute fodder.  Yet the deck just does not fully fit.  The issue at hand is the fact we are running multiple bad draw scenario.  The deck does take into account the tributes yet the multiple REB Chicks and the 3 Troop Dragons are not what I'd call great search targets.  Of course troop dragon will fit the dragon scenario, but he's just not that killer of a monster.  With low stats and the predominant issue of drawing into multiples and masked dragon, the synergy insight becomes clogged.  Thus creating an anti-synergy state.  Thus he must go...........

Also, masked dragon is a great monster.  Decent stats, lv. 3, and the ability to replace itself.  Yet the poor monsters downfall comes from not having enough search targets (kinda like shining angel).  Thus I believe dropping one of these to aid in more stability is a good decision.

Also, his trap line up makes me hesitant.  I see the dust tornado, but in reality what good is it in the current format?  Lets think about hitting a return, which presents no problem due to the numerous battle searchers.  Also, with the increase in royal decree I ask you all why destroy it?  If an opponent flips a decree to negate mirror force or sakuretsu armor, in the end it will only allow you to capitalize in late game.  Won't they feel salty when your Darkness Dragon swoops onto the field and kills their chaos sorcerer??  On the note of chaos sorcerer, the current metagame is being effected by creature swap.  Hmmmmmm, in a deck running numerous battle searchers playing in a relatively unstable meta, why not take advantage of the situation???

Also, with all the zarborgs floating around and their capacity to hurt your sitting monsters, I have decided to run a pair of My Body as a Shield.  One of the best all around forms of monster protection.

One of the last changes made to the deck was the running of 3 sakuretsu armor's.  This was done because if you think about the deck, the only monsters that generate negative effects to it have attacks bellow 1000.  Mystic Swordsman lv. 2, spirit reaper, tsuky lock, etc.  (Do not fret Deck Devastation Virus, because it just seems not to appear often)

This is the case because the death of our monsters means nothing in the long run.  Thus we must make sure that they do not hit our monsters or LP.  Mobius generates no disadvantage because we are running 6 traps and only 1 spell card (premature burial) which do not generate immediate results.  Plus a summoned chaos sorcerer or mobius will more than likely be swapped for a battle searcher.

Thus without further ado I present you with

Morphing Jar and Nimble Aid in stability, swapping, and tribute fodder.  The removal of smashing ground is justified because we are running soul exchange (which is also a counter to spirit reaper).  Twin-Headed Behemoth also makes sense do to its status as a legal dragon search and free tribute fodder.

Join me next week as I feature my version of the cyber stein otk.  I plan on fusing it with my last turn variant deck.  The results are one of my favorite splashes and I truly believe to be the mark of my GENIUS :P.

Until next time, do not follow the Cookie Cutter.  Remember at one time a random main decked cyber stein was thought to be bad tech.  Guess what it caught on (I used it in a few regionals early on.  Then a team who I played at one used a stein chaos deck.  Now Europe loves it.)  At one time D.D. Assailant was the must have card, now people tend not to run it.  At one time Return itself was viewed as disappointing.  The only reason cards fade in and out is because people play them.  To seek change we must act in a different matter.  The unplayable can be played and the worst concepts imaginable always have merit.
