TheMcShakeAlchemist on Yu-Gi-Oh!
The playable cards of 2010, at the time and in retrospect (part 4)
Hey everyone! The McShake Alchemist here with what's probly
going to be the article in this series that I'm insulted the
most for, or at least debated the most for. Today I'm going
to be talking about the Duelist Revolution expansion set.
So, I'm sure that most of you know how this goes by now, so
here are the playable cards in the set:
The Playable cards in Duelist Revolution (in order by
collector #)
1. Scrap Archfiend
2. Effect Veiler
3. Scrap Chimera
4. Scrap Goblin
5. Scrap Beast
6. Scrap Golem
7. Naturia Bamboo Shoot
8. Scrap Dragon
9. Scrapyard
10. Scrapstorm
11. Pot of Duality
12. Chivalry
13. Naturia Pineapple
14. Fabled Raven
15. Flamvell Archer
16. Stygian Street Patrol
17. Solemn Warning
1. Scrap Archfiend
This is a card that was already somewhat relevant at the
prerelease (As it was the promo) but there was a lot of talk
as to whether or not it would make the cut into most synchro
decks because it was a 2700 attack level 7 monster. For
awhile it sat pretty along with black rose dragon as the
level 7's. Since then, Black rose has been unlimited and
he's not played as much. This card is still a staple 2-3 of
in Salvo decks for sure, but he sits in the gray area that
Magical Android and Flamvell Uruquizas do, they're really
solid on their own, but usually get thrown in the shoebox
once you get all of the staple synchros to replace them.
2. Effect Veiler
When this guy (girl?) came out, people flipped their shit
and thought this card was the best thing since sliced bread.
While this card isn't horrid, it definitely isnt that great.
In retrospect people have seen this, and the value of it
tanked when Duelist pack: Yusei 3 came out with Effect
Veiler as a normal rare. I personally at least side deck
this card as a two of because it is a tuner even if you dont
need to negate anything, but it is pretty helpful in the
gadget and gladiator beast matchups.
3. Scrap Chimera
When the set first came out there were 1000000 different
builds of scraps, even ones that thought they were all
machines and played solidarity/limiter removal. People have
since learned to read their own cards and this card has
become the centerpiece of the deck. So much, that the rest
of the super rare support cards are borderline worthless,
while Chimera is still a good 6-8 bucks trade.
4. Scrap Goblin
Originally, this card wasn't played that much because scraps
just tried to use the gravekeeper's spy engine/chimera with
scrap beast to go 8 for scrap dragon. Since then people have
really found how valueable this card is and how well it can
buy you that extra turn in order to get you scrap
dragon/scrap twin dragon. If they dont have a second monster
to attack it again, you can just tribute it for scrap golem,
and then use golem to get the goblin and sync 8 for the
dragon (combos ftw!).
5. Scrap Beast
One of the best level 4 tuners out there. I really can't say
much about this card without just repeating stuff I've
already said about other cards or stuff I wanna say about
other cards. I'll just say that generally it is irrelevant
if he's attacked in face up defense mode because your
opponent probly has an answer or would've let him live, or,
they'll just kill it by battle.
6. Scrap Golem
I love this guy personally. When the set first came out
people experimented with golem at first as a 1 or 2 of, but
have since bumped him to /at least/ 2 and occassionally 3 of
him. He makes it so easy to get dragon, especially if you
have level eater online, and it makes it plausible to get
scrap twin dragon since you can bring back beast, and then
synchro summon for 9.
7. Naturia Bamboo Shoot
When the set first came out, Naturia Bamboo Shoot was one of
the hotted cards in the set and probably the most popular
card that people wanted to actually play with at my locals
and build a deck around. He started out at a solid 20$ trade
value ultra and 22-24ish ulti, and has since become a junk
ultra rare. If it had 2200 attack it would be fantastic,
but, in a format where you can play 3 cyber dragons, the 'ol
shoot just isn't that plausible.
8. Scrap Dragon
This is one of the coolest cards in the set, and possibly my
favorite. Keep in mind that I've built scraps /at least/ 3
times, just for funsies, but love the deck and how it plays
regardless. When the set first came out, one person opened
this at my locals at the 'release party' and he
completely.
flipped.
his.
shit.
(Forgive my french*) I ended up ripping myself off terribly
in order to trade for it, but I really wanted it for my
extra deck (I was playing a chaos build that had sangan,
card trooper, and because I was new and still trying to get
my feet wet again, sacred phoenix of nephtys). I've still
got the same scrap dragon today. When the set came out this
guy was hot. He's still really hot, his value has sat pretty
around 20-25 for ultra and 25-30 for ultis, and I feel that
is a fair price for him because of how versatile that he is
for being a 'generic synchro'. Since being released, in most
decklists I've seen, Scrap Dragon has replaced Red Dragon
Archfiend in the 8-star slot. While I personally prefer
scrap dragon, because of my playstyle, I can understand
either.
9. Scrapyard
When the set first came out this was worth a good 5-6 bucks,
nowadays, scrapyard is toilet paper. It's a very good card,
but I think the only holo that is pulled more often out of
DREV is Unicorn beacon.
10. Scrapstorm
When the set first came out this was also, worth a good 5-6
bucks. The big difference is, that this card is still at
least kinda difficult to open as far as holos go (maybe just
in my area). Still only worth a couple of bucks, but this
card makes the scrap engine really come to life. Think of
going turn 1
draw
summon scrap beast
set scrapstorm + book of moon
go
When you opponent goes to try to destroy the scrap beast,
you can chain scrapstorm, send a scrap chimera to the
graveyard, draw a card, and then destroy the scrap beast.
Because the scrap beast was destroyed by a scrap card, you
can add the scrap chimera you just ditched to your hand.
Then next turn, BAM! Scrap Dragon.
11. Pot of Duality
When the set came out this card was overhyped.
Since the set has come out, this card has made decks that
are borderline unplayable win YCS's. Twice.
12. Chivalry
When DREV was first released, this card had a bit of trouble
catching on, why? Because it wasn't
A.Pot of Duality
B. Solemn Warning
C. Scrap Dragon
D. Naturia Bamboo Shoot
E. Effect Veiler
While I'm not saying that Chivalry is as powerful as any of
those cards, it has since gained ENORMOUS popularity. When
DREV came out I picked up my playset of ultimate ones for
5$, nowadays I've seen people pay up to 7$ cash for just /1/
chivalry ultimate. It's a fantastic side board against
almost every deck. As far as answering the meta it stops
A. XX-Saber Emmersblade
B. Goyo Guardian
C. Blackwing - Kalut
D. Gravekeeper's Spy/Recruiter**
E. Gladiator Beasts
F. Honest
G. Ryko**
Need I say more?
13. Naturia Pineapple
When the set first came out, this guy was completely and
unbelievably overpriced. Since then, people have realized
that treeborn is better and naturias are tier two at best.
14. Fabled Raven
When the et first came out I swear I wanted to punch
darkworlds in the face. I went to a regional just three
weeks after the set was released, and a guy had 3 of these
round one and just went bonkers with goldds and silvas.
Since DREV was released more Fabled support has come out and
you can see this guy get used for what he was designed for.
I'm a fan of either honoestly.
15. Flamvell archer
This card is probly only on here because I played flamvells
and really liked the deck. This card literally helped me win
a match (I was already up 1-0 but it was because of this
card that I didn't lose) Just check out my regional report
with "The Little Engines that could" For more details.
16. Stygian Street Patrol
Right as Konami was about to nerf Infernities by limiting
Infernity Launcher, they decided to print this guy and make
the deck just as plausible as it used to be, just, in a
different way.
17. Solemn Warning
I'm aware this card is misplaced as far as a collector
number, but, I missed it when going over the list of cards
in DREV to be 100% honest. When the set first came out, this
card was only 20$. Twenty. Dollars. I WISH I could find it
for that much now. I've literally been called an asshole and
had my tradebook slammed and handed back to me when I
offered 20 cash for a solemn warning. Since then, this card
has gotten HUGE and is a 2 of in almost every deck here
stateside, and a 3 of in japan. I have a suspicion as to
what will happen with the next banlist and think that this
card will be worth less once it comes out, but we'll see.
So, those are my thoughts on what the playable cards in
Duelist Revolution are. Here are the top 5 lists for each of
the time frames I've talked about.
Top 5 cards at the time that Duelist Revolution was
released
5. Solemn Warning
4. Scrap Dragon
3. Naturia Bamboo Shoot
2. Effect Veiler
1. Pot of Duality
The Top 5 cards now that we've had some time to actually
playtest with DREV
5. Chivalry
4. Effect Veiler
3. Scrap Dragon
2. Pot of Duality
1. Solemn Warning
Here is the part where I figured I would get flamed for
writing this article and I considered just being a
conforming kinda person and saying that Pot of #1, but I
honestly find Solemn Warning to be a better card. I think
that both are absolutely fantastic cards, and will both be
in the top 5 cards of 2010 when I get around to that, but, I
am just a big Pot of Duality hater. I promise it's not
because I have some inability to get them or something. I've
got em, and I play em, same with warnings. I just honestly
find Solemn Warning more game winning than Pot of Duality.
There are times that both are game winning cards, if you
solemn warning a players turn 1 gadget, chances are they're
gonna be hurting for it. If you Pot of Duality and get that
Royal Tribute to go with your Necrovalley, they're going to
be in a world of hurt. I personally think that the impact of
Pot of Duality is bigger than
a. Solemn Warning's impact
b. Pot of Duality as a card
I just hate that it has almost completely warped the format
by making decks that, previously, were bordering tier 2, win
YCS Championships and beat out decks that already had
consistency.*** Again, it's probly just me being a bitter
pissed off teenager****, but, I just hate what Pot of
Duality has done to the current format.*****
Thanks a lot for reading! Feel free to send me something on
my various hatemail and flames and red flags about what a
N00B I am and how terrible I am at the game for daring to
even say another card is better than Pot of Duality. I'll
hopefully do an article this week on something other than
the top cards of 2010, as most of you probably know what
I'll say from Starstrike Blast is playable anyway!
