My personal Yu-Gi-Oh! Inventory (not collection)
July 6, 2012

Hey everyone! Let me start this article off by saying that Nats was a blast. I didn't do so hot, (6-3 at the end of day 1), but, I got to meet a lot of people in person for the first time, and I got to hang out with friends that I already knew and cannot see very often.

So, on to the article at hand today, contrary to what oyu may think the title of this article means, this is not a description of my literal 'inventory' of cards. Something that was a 'fad' amongst Magic: The Gathering writers about 6 months ago was writing "inventory" articles about how they could better themselves as a player, and I figured that I should do the same and see if I can bridge the idea to the Yu-Gi-Oh! world.

Why is it called an inventory?
The main reason it is called an inventory is it is a list (or inventory....) of all the things that are WRONG with what one does in card games.

Why would I want to point out everything wrong with my gaming?
Generally, one needsto recognize there is a problem in order to correct it, so, if anything, it helps one reach the common goal of becoming what they believe to be the 'perfect player'.

So, without further adieu, my personal Yu-Gi-Oh! inventory.

1. I'm very judgmental

As soon as I sit down across the table from someone, I am trying to read what they are playing by probing information out of them. A lot of times, unfortunately, I will use things that have nothing to do with what they say in order to judge what they are playing. Are they wearing clothing that isn't namebrand and was probably bought on discount? Guess they aren't playing the most expensive deck in the format. They're playing on a spellground double mat and using a TI-83? Probably on the most expensive deck in the format.

I generally try not to pass judgment, because I don't want people to judge me when they sit across from me, but, it is a very hard thing to get over, and I hope that while I mature as a person and player I will able to grow past this problem.

2. I rely on mindgames a little bit too much when I play

When it comes to 'Jedi-ing' my opponents and things of that nature, I'd put myself in the top tier of players with the ability, but, mind games will never completely replace tight play. Generally, at a larger event, I am able to get several wins off of using the techniques on my opponents, but, later in the rounds, such tricks work a lot less on more seasoned players. Many players start off in the x-0 bracket for a long time for several reasons. This is mine.

3. I don't always choose the best deck

This previous WCQ is one of the only times where I've played what I truely thought was 'the best deck' for the event. Generally I will try to play something that people will be unprepared to sidedeck for, and will be punished for it.

I also very much like the 'cute' factor of tier 2-3 decks. Other than Wind-Ups, the other decks I was thinking of playing were Empty Jar and Gallis Agents. Both were good against certain decks, but, it was hard convincing myself to play a 'meta' deck knowing that it was something people had playtested against before.

I'm sure that there are plenty of my readers who also love playing rogue decks, but, it's coming to a point (at least in my card gaming 'career') where one needs to decide if they care more about winning or having fun. I personally am of the belief that on a 1-10 "funness" scale, that I will be around a 7 winning with a meta deck, and a 4 losing with a meta deck. A creative or non-meta deck is much more bi-polar. I generally am around a 9 or 10 while winning with a non-competitive deck, but around a 2 when losing with it. This has led me, at least as of late, to care a lot more about playing a 'real' deck and keeping a level head throughout the tournament.

If anything it all boils down to a simple question: What weapons do you want to take to battle? A well oiled machine, or gun that jams half the time? When put in such terms, it seems like a no-brainer.

4. I don't playtest enough

This more applies to Yu-Gi-Oh! than Magic for me, but, until about a week ago, there were very few people to playtest with in my area, and, let's face it, a solid 80% of Dueling Network users don't know their nose from their ass. Most of my playtesting leading into Nationals was good 'ol fashioned Theory-Oh!

Sometimes I'll luck out and my tactics will work just fine, but, a lot of times, it just isn't enough. I'm right now working on getting a steady playtest group together to meet 2-3 times a week just to crunch decklists and numbers. I'm honestly way too excited about something that a lot of people have.

5. Sideboarding?

I consider myself pretty knowledgeable when it comes to sideboarding. I also admit that sideboarding is arguably the hardest part of Yu-Gi-Oh! As someone who regonizes both of these things, I still have to admit that I don't play enough sideboarded games in order to find out how to board more quickly. I was actually quite embarrassed at how long it took me to board against an Inzektor deck round 1, because I couldn't figure out exactly what to put in and take out. I had narrowed it down to either 4-5 cards I wanted in, but I wasn't sure what to take out.

Once the aforementioned playtest group starts meeting up, this problem will hopefully be amended.

6. I'm a Timone

I like having good ideas, hell, we all like having good ideas. Unfortunately, for me, a lot of times that means I will shun other people's ideas just because they are different than mine. There have been times when I shunned an idea, then, 6 months later, thought of it and decided it was a great plan. I hate acting like Timone treats Pumba in the Lion King, so hopefully I'll be able to stop doing it. I am working on being a more open-minded person, but anyone who has spent extended amounts of time on a forum before knows how hard it is to sift through everything to find the diamonds in the rough.

7. I have a hard time balancing card games

I play both Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh! Most people are aware. I have a lot of trouble balancing the two games equally and staying as up-to-date on them as I would like. I'm working on being able to keep up with both games without just getting completely absorbed into one of them. Hopefully I'll get better about it this year, as the summer is always really awkward for me in regards of having to pick favorites.

For now this does it for my personal inventory, but, I plan to continue and add on to the list in the future. Possibly reiterating some of the points, more than likely, adding other ticks to the list.

Feel free to contact me about anythign you've read of mine that you want to talk about, or, any quesitons in general you may have about the game, I'm always happy to talk to readers or just talk about the game in general.
