YamiBakuraFan's Little Shop of Horrors
Into the Devil’s Lair
November 28, 2005
Today I am stepping into the
depths of Hell itself to take a look at some interesting
Valuable Book promo cards, Legend Devil and Devil’s
Sanctuary which I’d like to say that although there are many
cards those who are overly religious would take as “satanic
elements” in Yu-Gi-Oh!, that everyone must keep things in
perspective. This is just a card game people! Your children
and friends are in no way in danger when playing this game,
its just for fun, they are just cards! There is no dark
influence in this game and Yu-Gi-Oh! is actually less
attuned to “dark forces” than such games like Ouija or
Tarot. There is no comparison between them actually. This is
only a game that is meant for personal entertainment, and if
you do not like cards with an evil theme just don’t play
with those specific cards.
Legend Devil
Dark Main-type
Demon Sub-type
Level 6
1500/1800
During each of your Standby Phases, increase this card's
attack strength by 700.
Legend Devil is a card originally used by Yami Malik against
Jounouchi in the late Battle City finals against Jounouchi.
Although Devil was far from Malik’s trump card it is a very
interesting card that can be used in a demon based deck or
its own deck. Being a demon Legend Devil can be food for
Dark Necrophia (Dark Necrofear) or can be used with Lord of
the Underworld Hades (Dark Ruler Ha Des) and his negation
effect. Although Legend Devil is a level 6 monster; which
will require a sacrifice to summon, its low starting attack
points makes it easily fetched from your deck via Killer
Tomato (Mystic Tomato), Critter (Sangan), or the much
underrated Last Will.
I find Legend Devil’s synergy with Killer Tomato to be
brilliant, getting a monster with a wonderful power-up
effect out so easily makes Legend Devil a versatile card to
use. Although it originally starts with 1500 attack, after
just one stand by phase Legend Devil will get a 700 boost
bringing it to a finer 2200, which can best Cyber Dragon and
Perseus if needed. This boost will continue during each of
your standby phases which makes Legend Devil even more
wonderful in each passing turn. Although monsters in this
meta don’t last for long, if you can protect Legend Devil
for awhile he can be a great beat stick.
A monster with Tomato control values and an ever increasing
attack can be a great thorn in your opponent’s side, I
highly suggest to tech this card in your Demon and Tomato
control decks just to see how it works. I once tried out a
Legend Devil in my deck based on Swift Black Ninja (Strike
Ninja) and it faired quite well. Some protection for it is
what counts, so cards like My Body as a Shield can keep your
Devil alive just long enough to cause some real damage!
Devil Sanctuary
Magic
Special Summon a [Metal Devil Token] (Dark/Demon/1/0/0) to
your field. This monster cannot attack. The battle damages
done to [Metal Devil Token] is done to your opponent
instead. During your standby phase, you must pay 1000 life
points or destroy that token.
A card quite famous to fans of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! Anime
and manga. This is the card that turned the tide for Yugi in
his final match against the sinister Yami Malik. It was
invaluable for his victory and can work for you as well.
Devil’s Sanctuary is one of the only cards in this game that
I consider to be a “Magic Monster”, which makes it somewhat
like the Trap monster cards. Although Devil’s Sanctuary
isn’t an official “Magic Monster” it has many of these
properties. First there is no immediate cost to the
activation of Devil’s Sanctuary, which can make the token
free for a quick sacrifice. This makes Devil’s Sanctuary a
key card for all of you Soul Control junkies out there. It
can also help in sacrificing for any other big monsters you
want on the field, Silent Swordsman, Perseus, even Nephytys.
Another use would be for the costs of other card effects.
Metal Devil Token is a 0/0 dark monster so you can use it as
a sacrifice for your Deck Destruction of Death card. Other
cards like Share the Pain can be used with it.
The second way to play Devil’s Sanctuary is for a quick
stall when in a pinch. You can keep the token on the field
as long as you want for the price of 1000 life points each
turn, this can be quite easy to upkeep early on in a duel,
but towards the end when life points run low it may hurt you
just a bit. Since the damage done in calculations including
the token are sent to your opponent instead, your opponent
may not attack the token, and if they do it works like a
free Magic Cylinder or Dimensional Wall in your favor.
Devil’s Sanctuary may be a bit out of date in the current
game, but I found it to be an excellent tech card back in
the days and even now is great for just about any deck that
can abuse both of its effects. Giving it a try can never
hurt, but just because you won’t gain any free advantage
immediately after playing it like Shrink or Earth Crusher
(Smashing Ground) many will just pass right by it without
realizing how well it combos with other cards. This is a
tech at its finest!

This is a basic control deck that involves a lot of abuse of
Killer Tomato for searching. I included a lot of removal and
some of the deck staple cards to make it run more smoothly.
The main combo is just to get out Legend Devil and use it to
destroy your opponent, all of the other cards are merely
support. I included a Devil’s Sanctuary in there as well,
just for some tech elements.
This deck is a bit more on the competitive side then my
previous decks, just because I once tried out a Legend Devil
deck myself and it worked pretty good; that was a few
restricted lists ago though. Who knows how it would work
now.
BLOOPER CORNER!
Yes I cut my usual review of cards short this time to give
some light on some of my past mistakes on articles in my
column. Nobody’s perfect, and well I’ll admit I’m far from
it. I’ve made quite a few mistakes in the past in my
articles, my most famous would be in the gadget article
which I had completely reposted from my massive mistake on
the effect text of Mobile Fortress Stronghold in which I
stated you had to sacrifice three gadgets to summon it when
you didn’t need to. Shortly after, my next big mistake would
be marking Death Guardius down as a level 12 when it is in
fact a level 7, again I apologize. However, I have not
corrected my Death Guardius article as of yet.
There are quite a few mistakes in my review of SOI, the most
notable being that Devil Frogs attack can go up to 2100
rather then the 2000 that I marked it on, a small mistake in
math, but a mistake nonetheless. The biggest mistake I have
ever made however, and one that I truly regret now is my
marking of Antique Gear Factory as a bad card when I merely
misinterpreted the effect text of it. In reality Factory
would only have to remove monsters with a level of 16 for
Gear Golem, not 16 monsters. This makes it slightly more
playable but still not amazing.
I would just like to take this moment to apologize to all
who have read my articles up to this date and have received
false information. I think this is a big deal, because if
I’m taking on the responsibility of giving all of you
information on cards yet to be released to the English card
game I might as well give this information correctly. From
now on, I will try to double and even triple check my work
thoroughly and spare no expense to make my information 100%
correct.
Thank you for your time, and I hope you will return for my
next article!
