Yuugi’s New Deck
September 26, 2005
In
the later episodes of Yu-Gi-Oh! deep within the Memory World
saga, Yuugi’s deck goes through a wonderful transformation!
It’s no longer the deck of Atemu, it’s his own deck built
from cards that represent his interests and inner soul.
Today I’ll be looking into many of these cards and their
quite wonderful effects.
Destructive Dragon Gandora
Dark Main-type
Dragon Sub-type
Level 8
0 / 0
This card cannot be special summoned. Pay half of your life
points, destroy all cards on the field and remove them from
the current game except this card. For each card removed
from this cards effect increase this cards attack strength
by 300. At the end of the turn this card was normal summoned
or reverse summoned, send this card into your cemetery.
One of Yuugi’s trump cards in the Memory arc, Gandora is an
amazing dragon monster to say the least. His art alone is
some of the best I have seen from any other Dragon type
monster since the Blue Eyes White Dragon itself. In my
personal opinion Gandora is a masterpiece of a card, but it
takes skill and the right deck to use it effectively in a
duel.
The first thing you notice is that Gandora is a level 8
monster, this means you need to sacrifice two of your
monsters on the field to summon it. Gandora cannot be
special summoned either, so cards like Killer Tomato or the
usual dump and revive tactics will not be effective here.
You need to play Gandora as it was intended to be played,
through a sacrifice. When you summon Gandora you can pay
half of your life points to destroy all cards on the field!
Wow, talk about field removal, not only does Gandora
completely clear the whole field, but it also increases it’s
attack by 300 for each card removed in this way. So now
you’ll have the only card on the field, with a possible
insane power bonus depending on how many cards are
destroyed. This makes Gandora better in mid game. The field
usually starts out fairly empty at first and fills up toward
the middle of the duel while finishing off quite empty in
the end.
If you can get Gandora out with 6-8 cards total and have a
good amount of damage inflicted upon your opponent you
pretty much just won the duel. But if not, the life point
payment is very steep. You may just lose in the next turn if
you’re not careful! Return from the Different Dimension can
be a great card to combo with Gandora. Gandora only lasts
one turn, and if you can destroy the field and get your
opponent topdecking, then a good RFTDD can finish the game.
Mashu Melon
Light Main-type
Angel sub-type
Level 3
300 / 500
When this card is attacked by your opponent while face-down,
inflict 1000 damage to your opponents life points after
damage calculation. This card cannot be destroyed in battle.
(Damage calculation is treated as normal)
Soul Hunting Spirit has finally met his match. You’re not
the only attack impervious monster in the Yu-Gi-Oh! OCG
anymore my friend! Mashu Mellon has moved in!
First played by Yuugi in the memory arc duel against Yami
Bakura’s undead lock deck, Mashu Mellon is a strange and
wondrous creature. His art seems quite twisted, with his
face a flip-flop and his cute bulging eyes sticking out from
his upside down smile. One would never guess such a kind
looking creature could be so vicious.
Released in Premium Pack 6, Mashu Mellon is a new and more
advanced stall card. It may only have 300 attack and 500
defense but much like Soul Hunting Spirit it cannot by
destroyed in battle. Mashu Mellon is better defense wise in
the fact that unlike Spirit it is not destroyed when
targeted by a card effect. No more Enemy Controller or
Thefts for the kill. He lacks the grand hand disruption
effect but has a built in burn effect.
When attacked while face down your opponent will be paying a
hefty 1000 life points! This effect is perfect for Mashu
Mellon since most of the time you will be setting this guy
and just waiting to be attacked. He can be easily searched
by both Critter and Shining Angel, making him a card that is
easily obtained through the course of a duel. Not only that,
Mashu is a Light, Angel, type monster. Angels and Light
monsters need more support to grow and become a better deck
type in the future. Mashu Mellon is a step in the right
direction.
Remember though, many of Spirits other weaknesses are still
here. Igzarion Universe and many other monsters with a
“trample” ability still run right over Mashu Mellon and
eliminate the whole stall aspect your going for. I’d
especially watch out for Perseus here. Other than that it’s
a very solid card, hey, it’s so good it had to be restricted
to one!
Blockman
Earth-main type
Rock sub-type
Level 4
1000 / 1500
Sacrifice this card to summon a number of “Block Token”
(Earth main-type, Rock sub-type, level 4, 1000 / 500) to
your field in face up defense position equal to the number
of turns this card remained face up on the field.
Legos have become Yu-Gi-Oh! Cards, wow what will they think
of next? Blockman was a card originally played in the manga
during the ceremonial duel between Yuugi and his Dark Side,
Yuugi playing Blockman is obviously a joke on Mr.
Takahashi’s part by taking things that children would like
and putting them into Yuugi’s deck, like with Mashu Mellon,
All kids love marshmallows! Blockman shares the ability of
Legos and can deconstruct band reconstruct itself into
different shapes, thus the tokens.
Blockman himself doesn’t have very amazing stats. Low attack
and defense points make him useless in combat with other
monsters, but that’s not his part anyway. He’s searchable
through Giant Nezumi and Critter. Being a rock monster he
could work in Rock decks or in an earth based deck as well.
His only use is to sacrifice for his tokens. The only
problem would be keeping him alive long enough to make good
use of his effects.
You can stall with cards like Sealing Swords of Light or
Nightmarish Imprisonment to help get a few turns on
Blockman’s internal clock. But what to do with the tokens
when you do sacrifice him? Yes you can use them for stall,
since they cannot attack. But if you can stall long enough
to make a bunch of tokens isn’t it all a waste in the end?
Field advantage is good, and with Scapegoat being limited to
one you could use it this way, but there is a reason for
Blockmans existence.
His main calling would be for a sacrifice. There are so many
great sacrifice monsters that are quite hard to run, cards
like Gilford the Lightning or Gondora just being a few.
Block tokens are the ideal food for these monsters. It’s no
real loss for you since you are making the tokens just for
this. Overall Blockman is interesting but just not an
incredible card. Its a fun card to try out in character
decks based on Yuugi, or in a casual Rock deck or Sacrifice
based deck, but just won’t see a good amount of competitive
play.
Now it’s deckbuilding time! Today I’m going to put together
a Yuugi character deck, featuring the three cards in this
article as well as many of Yuugi’s other new and improved
cards from the Memory arc! A mixture of Level monsters and
toy themed cards, Yuugis new deck is tough! Tough enough to
take on Bakura and even his own dark half as well!
