Cards in
Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters 6
Expert 2 for GBA!
February 27, 2006

Today I will be looking at some fairly old promotional cards that were available in my favorite Yu-Gi-Oh! video game for the Gameboy Advance Duel Monsters 6 Expert 2. In my opinion this game was the best Yu-Gi-Oh! video game ever created, and to this day I have yet to see a game that impresses me as much. Unfortunately, DM6 and its promos were only released in Japan (although some of the promo cards have been released in English through the use of various ports). If you are interested in Duel Monsters 6 you can still purchase the Japanese game from various sites online (although finding the game with the promo cards still inside may be next to impossible at this point). A very similar game to DM6 would be World Wide Edition: Stairway to Destined Duel, which has the same game engine but less virtual cards and weaker AI in opponents. Well I could rant about DM6 for pages, but we are here today to delve into DM6’s rather awesome promotional card lineup!

The thing I find most amusing about all four of DM6’s cards is that they are all based on concept art that Kazuki Takahashi (the creator of the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga) sketched in between chapters in the later Battle City storyline of the manga. All of the art of these cards were based off of these sketches, and one appeared in the manga storyline directly. The first card of the day will be Death Vorstagalf.

G6-01
DEATH VORSTAGALF
Earth/Dragon/Level 6/2200/1700
For each Monster that this card destroys and sends to the Cemetery
as a result of Battle, do 500 points of damage to your opponent.
Also, for each Normal or Instant Magic card activated by either
player, until the end of the turn, increase this card's attack
strength by 500.

Death Vorstagalf was a very limited edition card that was only packaged with the early copies of Duel Monsters 6. It was released to the TCG under the name Des Voltsgulf and has become a very rare card there as well since it was released as a Shonen Jump Championship promotional card. What makes this card so special? Well besides the fact it has rather interesting art, its effect may not be that desirable.

First lets assess this cards stats. Vortsagalf is a 2200 attack 1700 defense Earth main-type Dragon sub-type monster. This means it can stand up to cards like Cyber Dragon and is pretty much Tsukuyomi proof with its solid defense points. Being a level six you only need one sacrifice to summon this card, and since there are no limitations that prevent it from being special summoned a dump and revive strategy is possible. Being a dragon also gives it access to dragon supports cards like Stamping Destruction and Lord of Dragons.

Whenever a Vorstagalf destroys a monster in battle your opponent receives 500 damage. This is a mediocre burn effect at best, but if the monster that Vorst destroys is a weak attack mode monster, a little more pain on the opponent can never hurt. Whenever a magic card (normal or instant) is activated Vorstagalf will gain 500 attack points until the end phase of the turn. This can be pretty good since you can possibly make it a 2700 attack beat stick on your turn and is a good follow up to cards that clear your opponents field like Earth Crusher (Smashing Ground) or Cyclone (Mystical Space Typhoon).

Overall Vorstagalf is a very standard card, and doesn’t really fit in a defined decktype since its effects are all over the place. It doesn’t know if it wants to be a beatdown monster or a burn monster, and it really does a very average job at both. This card in my opinion is not as exciting as one would expect, but could be another good dragon to sit alongside White Horns Dragon in a dragon themed deck. Even then there are better choices out there.

G6-02
TOON BLACK MAGICIAN GIRL
Dark/Magic User/6/2000/1700
This card cannot be Special Summoned unless a you have a [Toon World] in
play. If a [Toon World] is destroyed, this card is also
destroyed. If your opponent controls no Toons, this card can
attack your opponent directly, but if he or she controls a Toon,
choose a Toon Monster as the attack target. Also, increase this
card's attack strength by 300 for each [Black Magician] and
[Magician of Black Chaos] in your Cemetery and your opponent's
Cemetery.

Toon Black Magician Girl is a very popular card among the fans. It is also a card that revolutionized the toon decktype. Not only was this card the last toon monster to ever be printed, it was also one of the best. This card has all of the stats of the original Black Magician Girl, except it has “Toon” in it’s name and carries the weaknesses of other toon monsters, If there is no Toon World on the field this card cannot be special summoned at all. Also, if a face up Toon World is sent to the cemetery, this card will also be destroyed.

With the weaknesses of toons however, also come the strengths. This card can attack your opponent directly every turn if your opponent doesn’t have a face up toon monster on the field. Unlike other toon monsters, Toon BMG doesn’t have to pay life points to attack either, making it better than the average toon! Toon BMG will also gain attack points for each Black Magician (Dark Magician) or Magician of Black Chaos in your cemetery, making it a possible choice for a Toon/Magic-User hybrid deck!

Magic User support works on Toon BMG as well, further boosting her playability. You can use cards like Magician’s Circle to special summon another Toon BMG or Toon Gemini Elves when either of the two cards attack, and mount another direct attack on the opponents life points. You can also sacrifice a monster on the field through the effect of Dimension Magic (Magical Dimension) to special summon Toon BMG to the field. I really like the versatility of this card, and I think it holds promise in the correct deck. At the end of the article I will be constructing my own Toon/Magic User deck build! Stay “tooned” for it!

G6-03
IGZARION UNIVERSE
Dark/Beast Warrior/4/1800/1900
You can activate this effect during your turn's Battle Step.
Reduce this card's attack strength by 400, and if this card
attacks a Monster in defense mode, and its defense strength is
lower than this card's attack strength, do Battle Damage to your
opponent equal to the difference. This effect lasts only during
the turn it's activated.

The third card I’ll be looking into today is Igzarion Universe. This card has already made its way to the TCG under the name Exarion Universe, and was a secret rare card in the last Yu-Gi-Oh! booster pack tin series. Iggy (as many have come to nickname this card) was a very good card at the time of its release, since it was one of the first successful monster with the “trample” (or pierce) effect that allows it to inflict damage to the opponents monsters, even when the hide in defense position.

Even if Iggy has to lower its attack strength by 400 to trample the opponents monster, it can still take down a great deal of lower defense monsters like Saint Magician (Magician of Faith) and Magical Merchant and inflict a good deal of damage to the opponents life points. This card is Soul Hunting Spirit (Spirit Reaper) and Mashu Mellons worst nightmare. It can successfully trample them over and over since they cannot be destroyed and inflict heavy damage on the opponent every turn. Also since Reaper and Mashu Mellon have weak attack and defense the damage will be great enough, even with the 400 points you have to lower to trample.

Iggy also has a great deal of Beast-Warrior support from cards like Wild Natures Release, which will pump Iggy up to a 3700 attack monster that can be a 3300 attack trampler! This is possible only because Iggy has a very good standard attack and defense with a solid 1800 attack and 1900 defense. This is very good for a level 4, since it has about average on both accounts. This makes Iggy able to take down many cards players run like D.D. Assailant and keeps Iggy from getting run over by Tsukuyomi (while being a good combo card to run with Tsuku because of its trample ability). I find Iggy to be a very useful card. It’s probably the best out of the three cards I’m looking at today.

G6-04
GILFORD THE LIGHTNING
Light/Warrior/7/2800/1400
If you sacrifice 3 Monsters to Sacrifice summon this card,
Destroy all Monsters on your opponent's Field.

The fourth and final of the DM6 promo cards is Gilford the Lightening. This is the only card of the above cards to actually be used in the manga series when it was played by Jounouchi Katsuya against Malik Ishtahl in the Battle City finals. Gilford was compared to the three Egyptian God cards in the manga because of its heavy cost of summoning and grand effect. Gilford definitely has quite the cost to use its effect, but it can be well worth it in the end.

Gilford is the equivalent to using Thunderbolt (Raigeki) or Lightening Vortex when it is successfully summoned with three sacrifices. Clearing your opponent’s field is a great effect, and then you’ll have Gilford with all of its 2800 attack points to ram into your opponents bare life points. Sacrificing for Gilford can be easier to summon if you build a deck around summoning it. The Gadgets and even cards like the three Poker Knights can make the arduous task of getting this big guy to the field a lot more simplistic.

Gilford is at least a flexible card since it can be special summoned and can be sacrificed with two monsters if you are not worried about activating the effect. Gilford has been released in the English tin set under the same name as a promotional card. It was also re-released in the Jounouchi Structure deck volume 2 with the same alternate art that was used in its English release. That makes the original Gilford from DM6 a very good card for your collection, since its art won’t be seeing a reprint anytime soon.

The Deck

Now to build a deck! This deck will be specifically centered on Toon Black Magician Girl and other Magic User/Toon combos. I would love to build decks for all three of the cards I have reviewed today but I will stick with the BMG deck for now.
