M3TABR3AK3R – Reversal Samurai

June 11, 2007

So far this format alone we've seen many decks top eight; Destiny Dude Turbo, Demise, Bazooper, Monarchs, Perfect Circle, T-Hero and even Samurai, so how do we stay ahead in the ever-changing meta? The answer is innovation.

In the set Force of the Breaker a card called Backs to the Wall was released. It says:

"Normal Trap - Pay Life Points so that you only have 100 left. Special Summon as many "Six Samurai" monsters from your Graveyard as possible. You cannot Special Summon more than 1 monster with the same name, or a monster that has the same name as a monster on the field."

At first glance we assess that it's a very risky card indeed. It’s an all or nothing strategy. Let’s hope that we get enough Samurai monsters to make it worth while, let’s pray your opponent has no burn. In a Samurai deck it's not really a player's choice card purely because it requires too much setting up, too much cost and a deck built around it in order to make it truly amazing. But let’s consider the cost of the card, 'Pay Life Points so that you can only have 100 left', it’s like playing with fire, surely?

In order to abuse this 'cost' we need to go way back to Pharonic Guardian. Don Zaloog was hot and a common fell to the wayside named Reversal Quiz.

"Normal Spell - Send all cards in your hand and on your side of the field to the Graveyard. Call the type of card (Monster, Spell or Trap) on top of your Deck. If you call it right, exchange your current Life Points with your opponent's current ones."

Now that 100 Life Points seems ideal for Reversal Quiz, giving this great burden to them. Alas, great rewards come at great costs. In order to activate Backs to the Wall we need to set up a Six Samurai monster in the Graveyard, and in order to pull of Reversal Quiz we need to engage our inner ESP.

Backing the Warrior

Let's break down the plan. Firstly we need a Samurai monster to hit the grave fast. All Samurai monsters are warriors, so by adding Reinforcement of the Army we’re able to move one level four or lower warrior to the hand for that quick dump. We can't rely on Reinforcements alone, but adding in two Warrior of the Wasteland it allows us to special summon one 1500 attack or lower earth warrior to the field. Best of all, Warrior Lady of the Wasteland herself is searchable via Reinforcements! Since The Six Samurai - Yariza is the only Earth Samurai, with an attack of 1400 he's the warrior for us.

+ 2 Reinforcement of the Army

+ 2 The Six Samurai – Yariza

+ 2 Warrior Lady of the Wasteland

Next we need to find ways to discard the tutored Samurai. The conventional way to do this is to set it and wait for it to be attacked, but being the OTK that is, we need faster methods.

Card Destruction is ideal. It allows us to set what we want to keep, discard the rest and get a fresh new hand. Next, A Feather of the Phoenix allows you to discard one card to the Graveyard to place one card from the Graveyard on top of the deck. Now remember Reversal Quiz's condition, we need to 'guess' the card type next on the top of the deck. Well, Feather helps us manipulate the deck.

+ 1 Card Destruction

+ 3 A Feather of the Phoenix

Passing the Quiz

Reversal Quiz is the aim of the deck so three needs to be included in order to get reliable draws. But in order to pass the quiz more manipulation of the deck is needed then just Feathers. Pigeonholing Books of Spell heralds an answer.

Pick up the top 3 cards of your Deck and return those cards to the top of the Deck in any order. Your opponent cannot look at the cards.

+ 3 Reversal Quiz

+ 3 Pigeonholing Books of Spell

In order to get to these key cards the deck needs to speed down. Extra draw is needed in the form of Upstart Goblin, Jar of Greed and Archfiend's Oath. Archfiend's Oath allows you to pay 500LP per turn and name a card type. If you call it correctly you are allowed to add it to your hand (if not it goes to the Graveyard). In order to guess Archfiend's Oath correctly Convulsion of Nature turns the game upside down, literally. This continuous spell turns the decks upside-down, allowing you to see the next card you draw so you can always guess the oath.

CTRL, ALT + DEL

The problem with OTKs is that they don't always go right. In this deck you need the key cards at the right times, but Self-Destruct Button gives us another shot. This trap says that if your life points are 7000 below your opponent, the match is a draw. So if your OTK didn't quite go to plan, CTRL, ALT + DEL.

Thing is, we’re relying on 1 card to provide the massive Life Point reduction. Wall of Revealing Light allows us to play in the multiples of 1000 to stop you opponent's monster attack below that multiple.

+ 3 Self-Destruct Button

+ 3 Wall of revealing light

Pot Shots

You may well think, "Great, I've got my opponent down to 100 or 1000, what do I do now?" The answer lies in the underplayed Fuhma Shuriken. When this equip card is sent to the Graveyard it inflicts 700 damage to your opponent. Now here’s a neat trick: by setting this before Reversal Quiz resolves it starts a chain

1) Fuhma Shuriken

2) Reversal Quiz

Resolves Reversal Quiz, switching Life Points then Fuhma Shuriken, dealing 700 damage to their switched life points.

Jar of Greed didn't make the cut because it would saturate this deck with too many unnecessary traps, making the chance that the top card will be spell less. If you're a gambling man the odds are that the top card will be a spell, so if in a tight spot you can just guess..

Convulsion of Nature isn't included as it only really helps with Archfiend's Oath. This is because when Reversal Quiz resolves you send Convulsion of Nature into the graveyard and thus the decks are return upright. In fairness there are 6 cards which can work with Archfiend's Oath so it shouldn't be a problem.

Irou over Yariza is something that took a lot of deliberation. This is because Card Trooper lets Irou hit the grave fast, while comboing extremely well with A feather of the Phoenix, and generally speeding up the deck. Space had to be made.

So there you have it, the Reverse Backs to the Wall OTK. Next in the M3TABR3AK3R series is another OTK, the Summoner of Illusions OTK. Until next time, send any comments, thoughts and opinions to Aaron Fletcher at emuron@gmail.com
