napay's Daddio Dueling Den
A Somewhat Partial History of Yugioh Deck Themes
6.25.07

Let’s start with the link, “Deck Theme's - List'em. Who said this game is getting boring?”.  I started the post nearly 3 years ago to show that there were other kinds of decks besides the typical cookie cutter.  If you’re not sure how long ago that was, you might try to remember a time when folks would argue on the message boards over whether the “7 Staples” really were staples (Raigeki, Harpies Feather Duster, Dark Hole, Heavy Storm, Pot of Greed, Monster Reborn and Change of Heart).  If you were playing this game before the first ban you’d recall that many thought the game was getting incredibly boring with lots of decks using Yata for a One-Turn-Kill.  While a true history would have included important stuff like dates, you can get a snap shot of what’s been happening since the very first ban from snapping though the 90+ decks that are linked in the post.

While the game has changed over time in response to new cards and new ban lists, two things have remained constant.  The first is that a new cookie cutter will rise from every new environment.  Ban list changes are followed by a period of time wherein a new cookie cutter is “flushed out”.  Despite the fact that the original ban list was only 13 cards (Witch of the Black Forest, Yata-Garasu, Chaos Emperor Dragon – Envoy of the End, Sangan, United We Stand, Dark Hole, Raigeki, Harpies Feather Duster, Graceful Charity, Monster Reborn, Delinquent Duo, Mirror Force and Imperial Order), the first ban was heralded as the death of Yata and boredom.

The second constant is that a significant number of players will experiment with new cards in a way that seemingly expresses deck building as a form of art.  I’ve tried to capture this in the list.  While there is certainly respect for folks who build tournament winning decks, I think there is equal respect for folks who find creative ways to combine cards in a synergistic and creative way for the sake of “seeing how it works”.  Given the importance of creativity I’ll continue doing this in a new and improved thread (including dates) so long as folks want to participate.  So the “history” is in the listing itself; the rest of this article will be some of my thoughts about the list.

COMPLAINTS

The most common complaint I receive is that the decks are old and not ban compliant.  I agree that the list is not targeted as a resource for netdecking.  The list is moreso intended to be a source of potential inspiration.  You might see something that peaks your interest and discover a whole new idea on a card you never thought about before.  While I can’t be certain of the uses folks have found for the list, it’s being viewed regularly by folks besides me.  I’m not sure how the Pojo Boards count views, but 30,000 seems like a lot.

The most common complaint I have is that folks don’t usually explain their decks when they post them.  This is, of course, the norm. But, my approach has always been to help others who know less than me and I think that having some explanation about how a deck is supposed to work is just as important as the list of cards in the deck.

COMPARTMENTALIZATION

The design of the list grew on its own.  The themes are organized in a format that developed on its own.  The layout is:

Alternate Win

Attribute Themes

Ritual

Fusion

Booster Set Sub-themes

Special Combos

Style of Play

Loops and Locks

Monster Type Themes

You might think this is unimportant and obvious.  Then again, I’m not so sure that there isn’t a better way of grouping decks.  My point is that we talk about what kind of deck we have, but it’s all very informal.  Within each group, I’ve got sections that breakdown until you get to individual decks.

YOU’RE MISSING E-HEROS

Post a good one in the next thread (Deck Theme's - List'em.  Who said this game is getting boring - II).  I know I don’t necessarily have the very best of each deck type listed, but I have the one that someone cared about.  Getting a deck listed is about taking the time to make a good post; meaning it’s a follow up from the time spent in making a good deck.  Admittedly, there are a few decks that are not explained nearly as completely as others.  If you posted a link for review and your deck didn’t get linked, it was not ignored.  I reviewed all the links that were provided, often posting requests for more info within the thread itself.  Requests for linking often did not meet the criteria that I laid out at the top of the Deck Theme’s post.

42 TO 40,000

I learned a few things about the Pojo message boards in this process.  While I didn’t learn the meaning of life, the universe and everything, I did learn that posts live for 42 days and then they go to the archive where they can’t be added to anymore.  I also learned that posts cannot be more than 40,000 characters.  This second bit of knowledge is what has led me to converting the post to an article; I can’t add more deck links.

I can’t begin to thank everyone who has helped put this list together over the years.  Pojo ID’s are cited in the list.  I could not have done this without your help.

If you want to see the original 92 decks and links, they are included below.  It’s easy to find me on the message boards, e-mail is ok, but I like open discussion better.  Click for the original Deck Theme’s post on the Pojo Message Boards if you want to see the entire thread.  Oh, and yes, I am the same notasperfectasyou that auctions Yu-Gi-Oh cards on EBAY.

Ciao, napay

napay’s prior articles and why you’d want to read them:

“Details, Details, Details: Own the Rules OR Get Owned by the Rules” presents a few examples of some of the little details that are important in Yu-Gi-Oh.

“Counter-Point: Continental Ban Lists - Deep Down Inside Who Wants to be a Conformist?” presents half a debate with Pojo’s Leon on why we shouldn’t follow the Japanese ban list.

“Vulnerability: a New Perspective on Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning” presents a contrarian point of view as we are leading up to the anticipated banning of BLS-EotB along with a different way to think about vulnerability.

“Not As Perfect As Konami – Will Work For Cards” presents a wish list of things I’d like Konami/UpperDeck to do.

“Thoughts and Observations about Winning Decks – Part 5” presents a fifth installment of analysis for the purpose of seeing what can be learned from comparing two proven decks focusing on the issue of the changing landscape of Yu-Gi-Oh.

“Thoughts and Observations about Winning Decks – Part 4” presents a fourth installment of analysis for the purpose of seeing what can be learned from comparing two proven decks focusing on the issue of replacing cards.

“Thoughts and Observations about Winning Decks – Part C” presents a third installment of analysis for the purpose of seeing what can be learned from comparing two proven decks focusing on cards that strengthen your position.

“Thoughts and Observations about Winning Decks – Part B” presents a second installment of analysis for the purpose of seeing what can be learned from comparing two proven decks focusing on cards that weaken your opponent.

“Thoughts and Observations about Winning Decks – Part A” presents a first installment of deck analysis for the purpose of seeing what can be learned from comparing two proven decks.

“Mom and Dad Won’t Let Me Buy Cards On EBAY” presents some thoughts on the good and the bad of buying cards on EBAY and how you might work EBAY for a better experience.

“The Exodia FTK” presents an example of applying calculated mathematical probabilities to Yu-Gi-Oh in demonstration of why a deck 40 cards is a good idea.

“Fake/counterfeit Yu-Gi-Oh cards” presents a summarized version of my own experience buying fake cards and what I learned from it.

“The Star Circle” presents a very visual way to think about the components of your deck and how to think about card flow as a way to improving your deck.

“How Big is your Monster” is about why you need to stop thinking about how to get big ATK monsters in your deck and why you do need to think about how cards work synergistically.

The original post and deck links are as follows:

In an effort to combat the argument that this game is getting boring and that everyone is playing the same kind of deck, I propose that we make a list of commonly played (and some not so commonly played) deck styles that exist. I have edited this post regularly to collect new thoughts into this first post for a while now.

HOW TO GET YOUR DECK LINKED

1) Post your deck in the deck forum. Your post must be neat and organized. Only post one deck per posting, I do not link to deck galleries. Your post must include some explanation about how your deck works. The key cards in your deck should also be noted and explained. DO NOT POST YOUR DECK IN THIS THREAD! Start a new one just for your deck!
2) Do not post traditional format decks. Only post advanced format decks. Only post cards in their English names. Do not post decks that include any card that is not in english.
3) Decks must be unique to the list. Do not post decks that are already in the list, they are listed. If you have a deck that is vastly improved over a posted one, let me know when you recommend it and please indicate which deck you want replaced and why your's is better.
4) Only post decks that are viable. I'm not going to link to silly decks, decks that are not designed with a winning intent or decks that have no clear purpose will not be linked.
5) See a good post before you post. If you want to see exactly what I mean, the Warrior Ben Kei deck near the end is an exceptional post. Here is a link to another great post: Primary Lotus' The King Deck
