Welcome back
readers! Today I'm not fixing a deck, or writing an
article, but I present to you a interview with one
of the games best players!
Patrick Smith is a Shonen Jump Champion, National
Qualifier, and one of the most interesting people
I've ever had the pleasure of talking to. He has a
positive attitude no matter what, and is a top notch
player if I ever saw one. I recently contacted him,
asking for an interview, and he granted me just
that! Here is how it went...Hope you enjoy!
RJ: Hi
Patrick! Thanks for sitting down with me for this
interview!
Patrick: NP
;).
RJ: So
Patrick, how old are you?
Patrick: 17.
RJ: Cool
Cool...so what are your credentials in Yu-Gi-Oh!?
Patrick: SJC
Columbus Champion, 7-2 record at SJC Indy, and
several regional top 8s and 4s.
RJ: VERY
impressive!
Patrick:
Thanks ;).
RJ: Whats
your favorite Yu-Gi-Oh! Card?
Patrick: I am
partial to Painful Choice!
RJ: Good
choice man! So Pat, what do you think of our current
Forbidden and Restricted list?
Patrick: I
don't think its very good at all ;(. I think it
lacks speed...draw power. Its a pretty aggro meta.
Consistent cards like Painful Choice would help IMO,
deck thinning etc.
RJ: I
see...So what are your thoughts on Scooping? As in
signing a match slip in the favor of your opponent
whether you have won or not in exchange for
cards/prizes? Its been a very popular topic as of
late, and many players have received Bans from
UpperDeck because of it.
Patrick: I
think its kinda messed up...you shouldn't do it at
all, but I think its kinda a grey area. Maybe it
would be ok with some sort of full split or
something...I'm not exactly sure.
RJ: What are
your opinions on the current prize structure of
Yu-Gi-Oh! Events?
Patrick: I
think its pretty bad, honestly. Money prizes would
be really nice IMO. It would also cut down on
players illegally scooping. Nobody is going to scoop
when there is money on the line, ya know?
RJ: Very
smart...good points! What do you think of Teams in
Yu-Gi-Oh!?
Patrick: I
don't even like calling them teams anymore...more
like big groups of players looking to make profit. A
real team is a group of players, maybe 5-7 players
that are all good friends, travel to events to take
part in the competition, and have a fun time doing
it. That's what its all about, fun.
RJ: I like
your philosophy =]. So Patrick...I have to ask here:
We all know you won SJC Columbus LAST year, do you
think you're in contention to take it all again THIS
year?
Patrick: It
would be pretty cool! I know its possible...but I
just go to have fun. Its not like I need the money
or anything, if I win that's awesome, but I'll have
a good time no matter what ;).
RJ: Awesome
Pat =]. So what are you playing these days?
Patrick:
Poker! Haha just messing. I used a random warrior
thing at SJC Baltimore that worked really well, but
luck wasn't on my side that day and it didn't do too
well ;P.
RJ: We all
have our off days, you can't go 13-0 at every event
Pat!
Patrick: Haha
;).
RJ: So..what
was your worst loss in your Yu-Gi-Oh! Career?
Patrick:
Ugh...round 7 at SJC Indy. I was playing David
"f00b" Simon when time was called. He had won game
one, and during the end of match procedure, I
managed to take game two! In Sudden Death I was very
nervous, and I misplayed. I played Metamorphosis on
a Goat Token, and I brought out Thousand eyes
Restrict. I sucked up his monster, and tried to flip
up my face down Tsukuyomi, flipping down TER and
winning the game, but I realized that I couldn't
flip her up with TER on the field. Next turn David
used Snatch Steal and Airknight Parshath to win the
game ;(.
RJ: Ah! Brain
fart =[. What kind of advice do you have for new
players looking to learn the ropes in Yu-Gi-Oh!?
Patrick: The
best thing to do when you're young in the game is to
attend as many Locals and Regionals as possible.
When you go to Regionals and/or Shonen Jumps, try to
talk to the big name players! They'll most likely
help you out or play you a match or two, I know I
would help out =]. So come see Pat Smith! ;).
RJ: LOL.
Great advice Patrick. Well that's about all the time
I have for this interview, sadly =[. Thanks alot for
taking the time to do this for me and my readers
Pat!
Patrick: No
problem, thanks for having me!
Patrick Smith is a true Yu-Gi-Oh! hero! His
optimistic attitude towards things is a positive
thing that we should all mimic, and I want to thank
the man for granting me this interview! Thanks Pat!
Well thats about all the time I have, so make sure
you keep all the comments, flames, etc. coming @
