Pojo.com's Yu-Gi-Oh! Interviews
A Normal Pojo User Interview (Part 1) With Alex Davis
By Ally
5.08.07

First things first I like to thank Pojo for putting this interview up on the main site.

Ally: Before we get started with the interview I like to thank you for doing this interview. For my first question what is your full name?

Gotenks: Alex Davis

Ally: What is your pojo screen name?

Gotenks: Gotenks1215

Ally: Thank you. I know your just a regular user on Pojo, but I'm going to try a different interview to get a first hand look at some undiscovered talented individuals. When you first joined Pojo how did you feel? I mean did you have any experience before joining the site and how did it help you in anyway?

Gotenks: Lets see, its been a long while, at least it seems that way since I joined Pojo. Let me go and look at my join date real quick XD. Ok, it was back before the Charlotte SJC. Back then I knew a good bit about the game and kept up with SJC's and knew how to play well, but I hadn't been to a regional or SJC yet at that point. I mostly use the site, even since joining, for information about regionals, card releases, chat with friends in the team forums, and in the tournament forum; so it's helped me keep up with the game much easier than most other ways.

Ally: That’s good to know hehe. Well I'm glad Pojo has helped you in a lot of ways. Were you on a team when you first joined or a loner for the time being?

Gotenks: Well, I played at a local toy store with my friends Mark Harmon (Meratsu Doki), Cody Dominic (Aom3p), and a few others; we made a team called Rifts (who I might add officially started the custom playmat craze at SJC Charlotte and inventors of Sexy Sheep Tokens). We kept that team up for a long while till Cody and myself moved over to Amp because some of our players got out of the game competitively, while myself and Cody wanted to keep playing.

Gotenks: And cause Sexy Dave wanted us =o.

Ally: Before we get to talking about AMP lets talk about Rifts. How was it like being on Rifts and who were the members.

Gotenks: It was I, our leader Mark, Cody, Kevin (Aethereall), Adam, and Andrew as our main few guys (the last two of which don't really traverse Pojo). None of us were known, or had T8's yet. Our first break was when Cody got his first T8'd at a Charlotte, NC Regionals in... August or October 05’ I think it was. We all had a great time hanging out at our local and going to events together. Great times those were *gets nostalgic.*

Ally: That’s great! You guys really came a long way! What about Team AMP? Can you describe how you came aboard that team?

Gotenks: Well, Dave Peircy also T8'd the regionals that Cody first T8'd at, so they talked in the T8 rounds when they sat next to each other and that basically started their friendship. After they became friends for a while; I met Dave, and we also became friends. After a long while, even though Andrew got his T8 at the Spartanburg regionals in 06, Rifts started falling apart for a few reasons. Cody got a few more T8's and was asked by Dave to join Amp, not only because they were great friends, but also I think because Mark was deciding to not play as many regionals as before, plus a few other things; so Cody took the opportunity to move up to a better team and that left us kinda high and dry since our team was out our best player. After a while longer, I started getting out of the game as well, since regional T8's CONTINUED to evade me, and my teammates weren't finding much success either. I think I was burning myself out on trying to T8 (I think I went about 0-15, meaning 15 regionals without a T8, highest placing being 9th, 15th, 22nd at SJC Durham, and a random 25th). A few months of lying low though and talking with Dave and his friends, which became my friends as well, got me to want to try for a T8 again, so I talked with Dave and he let me join Amp.

Ally: And you did Top 8 when you join AMP correct?

Gotenks: Yes, though it wasn't for quite a few months afterwards. In fact I almost got cut from the team because of my dry spell in T8's XD I literally made the deadline for it when I T8'd a Charlotte, NC Regionals back in October 06’. I did it with a random as hell looking deck that really no one could describe XD.

Gotenks: Not only was that regionals special for me, but also because Sean Burris got his first T8 there, and Amp put three members into the T4.

Ally: That’s great that your team mates got in the top four. Just out of curiosity did you make a Pojo Report?

Gotenks: Yes

Ally: Okies, let me get the link then if you do not mind me putting it up on the main site?

Gotenks: Sure

Gotenks: H/o I’ll get it.

Gotenks: http://www.pojo.biz/board/showthread.php?t=353611

Ally: Thank you Gotenks! Maybe a lot of the newer people on Pojo can read this and learn it's never too late to top 8 or even do better at the game. What deck were you running when you topped 8?

Gotenks: Wow, how should I begin XD. It used 2 Zaborgs, 3 deko, and 1 copy of the following: Asura, Drillroid, Banisher, Cyber Phoenix, Exiled, Night Assailant, and Cylinders. It was an Aggro-y deck, for sure, but it was all teched up. The night before, I just said screw it, and I threw in a bunch of stuff I wanted to run for the hell of it; and it tested really well actually; so I ran that, and the deck ran FLAWLESSLY throughout the day. Every single tech card in my deck had a star moment where it literally won me a game, specifically Cyber Phoenix and Magic Cylinder, but as crazy as the maindeck was my sidedeck is where I brought out the surprises. I ran a Dark World conversion side with a random stein, and it tore people apart when I sided it in game 2 and ran them over fast with it.

Gotenks: I mean, that stuff up there being the highlights of the deck.

Gotenks: Those aren't the only monsters I ran XD

Gotenks: Just the choices I made that stood out the most.

Ally: oOo I see. Well that’s good that you topped 8 your first regional then you topped 4! How well have you been doing after the top 4?

Gotenks: Heh, haven't T8'd after that one, but even still I guess I'm liking where I am right now. I have my invite, so I'm not in a rush to get my invite for Nats, people know me around here now, not as being really great at the game or anything, but I have lots of friends that I love to hang out with at regionals. It's an all around good time, regardless of yewgimanz outcomes. If I can ever T8 again I'll be really happy, but I like being on a great team, with great friends just fine as it is. =] *now if only SCG's would bring more regionals down to South Carolina so I could at least HAVE more opportunities to T8 >_____>*

Ally: Having more regionals in South Carolina would be nice! ~Hopes Matt_v reads this >> <<~ You'll top 8 again one day ^_^. Anyways do you have any advice to the new players out there that are reading this?

Gotenks: YES!

Gotenks: Don't be a jerk. I can't tell you how many times I've played against or seen players with terribly bad attitudes, or are too cocky. When they get into rulings disputes or are losing, winning, or whatever it may be, they always argue and don't listen to people; and it makes the whole situation just nasty. It's just a game. Never take it too seriously. If you do it loses its meaning, and purpose of just being a fun game.

Ally: Well that’s some great advice for the pojo readers and unfortunately I only have a few more questions left. What you think of the current forbidden list?

Gotenks: It's good; more decks are doing well now than ever before, that means they must be doing something right with the list. Only problems, which are GAPING holes in the otherwise nice list, are Snatch Steal and Ring of Destruction. I also *personally* don't like just how stupidly aggro the game has gotten, the Goat Control days were just so skillful and fun, those were the TRUE combo decks.

Gotenks: Besides like, Duo and BLS, those were the only complaints I think could be made about that format.

Gotenks: I'd still take that format over anything else period though.

Ally: oOo what card you want banned and what card you want off?

Gotenks: Um, if it's just one, Snatch Steal. Card I want off... wow that's tough. PERSONALLY, I loved Cyber Jar, but I  have to say Tsukiyomi. I love so many of those cards on the banned list, but those two I'd have to say I want off the most because I just enjoyed playing with them.

Ally: Cyber Jar would be nice hehe. Well I have one final question for you, Why Gotenks for a Pojo Screen Name? You love Dragonball Z that much haha.

Gotenks: XDDD I was actually hoping you'd ask this question. Every time I go to a new message board and post, some ALWAYS hounds me on having a DBZ screen name. I made the damn thing like 5 years ago. The only reason I don't change it is because it's easier for people to recognize me if I just keep using the same screen name everywhere I go. I still enjoy watching DBZ, even though I haven’t barely seen an episode in years, I guess it's one of my guilty pleasures, watching mindless face-beatings with terrible plots and episode-long sessions of pointless dialogue XD. Most people will say it's bad, despite how influential it's been, but I like it still I guess lol.

Gotenks: Other than watching a few episodes like, last month, I haven't even seen an episode since they stopped showing it on TV like, way back in 03’.

Ally: oOo well that’s it for my questions. Will you please give a closing statement?

Gotenks: Ya, the new Pkmn game is great, My NBA team is down 1 game, and I need to check some poker stuff for the WPT Championships that started yesterday that I haven't seen yet. But thanks for the interview, it's been fun! =o

Gotenks: Oh ya, and remember kids, Amp Runs Thru You.
