A “Spicy” Interview With Ryan Spicer
By Ally

4.18.07

Before we begin I like to thank Pojo for putting this up.

Ryan Spicer Pojo Profile: http://www.pojo.biz/board/member.php?u=34236

Ally: What is your name?

Ryan: Ryan Spicer

Ally: Where do you live currently?

Ryan: Arlington, TX (where I first topped 8ed a SJC  J)

Ally: Hehe nice! What Shonen was it?

Ryan: Arlington, TX in July

Ally: How old were you when you topped 8?

Ryan: 15

Ally: What place did you finish?

Ryan: 3rd

Ally: What deck were you running and can you give me a basic rundown on what it was?

Ryan: I was running an Asura swap deck, it was right before it became popular, and I didn’t run royal decree with it which was the most popular way to run it at the time J

Ryan: And it was my first Shonen Jump.

Ally: That’s awesome! Was there a moment during the Shonen Jump where you thought you weren't going to win?

Ryan: Oh yea, first round I was playing a very aggressive opponent that kept getting in my hand, but luckily I had scapegoat and 2 swap J other than that not really; I did very well the whole day.

Ally: Must have been hard for you. How tough were the rest of the opponents you had to face? How challenging were your opponents?

Ryan: Umm it’s kind of hard to say, because I was drawing very well the whole day; but I would have to say that Jake McNeely was my hardest opponent of the day.  At the time I didn’t really know him TOO well but no it’s no big deal when I play him but overall the people I played were all good; but I just drew good hands the entire day. Oh! Harry Anderson was pretty tough too.

Ally: What did it feel like when you topped 8? It must of been pretty exciting!

Ryan: Yeah, I was really excited because at the time I was pretty new and it was my first event. I had attended and plus I got accepted to Outphase officially.  I had been accepted prior to it by Fili Luna, but we weren’t going to say anything to the rest of the team until after the sjc.

Ryan: Oh wait! I also had one regional top 8 at the time J, but I topped 8 the next two regionals after that.

Ally: What were the two regionals you topped 8 after that and what place did you get?

Ryan: 2 Houston regionals

Ryan: 2 weeks in a row

Ryan: I was using the same deck as I was at the jump ‘cept I used an e-con the first time over smashing and I used a decree lineup the 2nd time with morphing jar.

Ally: What’s it like being on Team Outphase?

Ryan: It’s notin’ really. It’s just igood to know that I’m on THE BEST TEAM IN NORTH AMERICA and probably the best everywhere else.  We haven’t done too hot at the last 2 events but it’s mostly because of the new otk's.  Expect us to get back on track!  I think were underestimated because everyone is all ‘bout Overdose at the moment but that will pass as we come into center stage.

Ally: Nice! You have any helpful advice for the YGO! duelist out there that are reading your article?

Ryan: Umm if u want to be successful u need to practice ALOT and don’t get mad if u lose. Take every loss as a good thing and learn from things u could have done better with. If there was nothing u could have done, don’t fret its wut the game is about sometimes. If u get mad u normally do worse and there is no point to get mad over a game so just have fun win or lose, and another thing u have to remember, ur deck will work MUCH differently in a tournament, because people tend to play more conservative, and in testing people don’t care as much, so ur results may not be 100% so don’t stick on ur losses.

Ally: That’s really helpful advice Ryan!

Ally: Have you and your team had any battles and if so with who?

Ryan: Yes, we team warred Team Kamikazee: it was Hooman, Jake, me, and Littao against their Carlo Perez, Ben Saksaksaksaks (he top 8ed nats), Oscar Hopkins, and Augustin Herrarah. Well Hooman lost, because he was very disappointed with his loss for the crush, then Jake lost to 2 key misplays, then I played and took their whole team out! <3, and we have warred team Hpnotiq after Austin and beat them with our first 2 people outta 4, and there have been some others in between but that was before I was on so I’m not familiar with them outside of the Havoc Vs Outphase war which we won.

Ally: In your YGO! career, what you say your biggest accomplishment is outside of coming in third at Arlington SJ?

Ryan: Getting 2nd in Austin or helping my teammate Chris Bowling gets his top 8 in St. Louis

Ally: Did anyone teach you how to play YGO! or you taught yourself?

Ryan: I mostly taught myself, but after I came to Texas from Michigan, Fili Luna started playing with me a lot and I learned almost EVERYTHING from him as far as playing good goes but later I started to learn from Jake McNealy (my Jakey POOH!!)

Ally: How would you describe yourself as a duelist?

Ryan: Umm I would say that my play style changes ALOT thru out the weeks and months..  i normally go thru periods where I’m very conservative and periods when I’m a very aggressive player.  my conservative side normally comes out when I’m preparing for something, but when there is nothing close by I play at a in between state where i shift from conservative to aggressive throughout a match.

Ryan: Once in a while I’m wrong.

Ryan: But that’s almost never.

Ryan: But it hurts when I get smacked with that mirror.

Ally: What are the next SJC’s are you attending?

Ryan: I should be attending the SJC in Montréal or Anaheim.

Ally: What you think of the new forbidden list?

Ryan: I really like it ‘cept for snatch and ring.  if they were gone I would say this is the best format we  have had yet.  There is so much room for deck building and diversity.

Ally: Why would you say there is much room for deck building and diversity?

Ryan: Because it has been the first one that has had a lot of diversity, and right now it’s really up to how good of a deck builder u are and it makes it so ur decks can be more personalized.

Ally: What’s your favorite Card?

Ally: And Why?

Ryan: Thestalos, because it’s the most consistent monarch.  Most would say Zaborg, but I think Zaborg is the most splashable monarch, but Thesty is the best for monarch decks.  I ALWAYS run three if I can.

Ally: Well I better wrap this up. Last question Ryan! How well do you think you will do at the Montreal SJ in Canada? Give me a prediction basically.

Ryan: Umm if I am prepared I think I will do x-2 at least, but if I’m unprepared look forward to a through scrubbing.

Ally: Let us hope you don’t scrub out. Thank you for your time Ryan and I hope to do another interview with you soon.

Ryan: Outphase is #1!
