The True “Domino” Winner
Mike Powers
By Ally

4.06.07

Before I start! I like to thank Pojo for putting this article up for me!

Domino’s Screen Name: http://www.pojo.biz/board/member.php?u=48429

Ally: Before we get started, I like to thank you for taking your time away from whatever you were doing to do this interview. First question, what is your name?

Domino: Mike Powers

Domino: My online alias is "Domino."

Ally: Why Domino?

Domino: It's my favorite movie, and when I chose it at the time, I thought "that's a pretty cool name”

Domino: and keira knightley is hot

Domino: =]

Ally: Haha men ;x j/k. How old are you?

Domino: 18

Ally: Recently you finished 19th at Shonen Jump Columbus with an interesting deck. Can you tell the readers about your deck?

Domino: When people look at the deck, they usually assume it's Explosion based, and I get killed by Decree.

Domino: Not true, though

Domino: I use troopers to not only mill for explosion

Domino: But to combo with premature, call, feathers

Domino: And they are a huge source of draw power

Domino: That the deck is otherwise lacking

Domino: people are also very afraid to Sakuretsu / Ring them, because it's a +1 for me

Domino: so they push for damage, along with cyber phoenixs, and sometimes they kill, sometimes I finish them off with Brain Controls / Snatch Steal / Ring / Cylinder

Domino: despite the fact that it's a combo deck, I feel that in the right hands (mine) it's definitely one of the best decks out there right now

Domino: it outspeeds DDT very well

Domino: and anything running card trooper is a dream for me

Ally: How consistent is the deck?

Domino: it's extremely consistent

Domino: the thing about it is

Domino: because of the various win conditions

Domino: it's difficult to get a bad hand

Domino: aside from DMOC opening hand with no way to get rid of it

Domino: or something along the lines of 2 feather / 2 smash / brain control

Domino: most every hand is good

Domino: oh, and the deck is a stacker's dream

Domino: =P

Ally: I bet it is ;x

Domino: trooper, duplication, limiter

Ally: Right. Are you going to play this deck again at the next Shonen Jump you attend?

Domino: yes

Domino: I'm going to make a couple key changes that should surprise everyone I play against

Domino: and win me a few games

Ally: And hopefully get another meatgame feature match too. Oh! speaking of that how did it feel that your deck for a profile and you were on metagame?

Domino: I love it

Domino: I love getting coverage at jumps

Domino: aside from my 2nd time (out of four jumps) going x-1 and losing last round and coming 3 places away from making day2

Domino: that's the best part

Ally: That’s got to suck. At least you didn't finish 17th place.

Ally: How do you feel about the current metagame and you think your Magical Explosion deck is going to have a heavy impact on it?

Domino: Well, aside from the online players from other well-known places, I don't think people are going to be considering my deck a real threat until I get to day2, which should happen soon. Once I do, though, I think it might.

Domino: It doesn't lose too much, and the things it does lose to, it has a pretty close matchup with

Domino: Aside from game1 vs. Demise being practically a coin flip, only a dedicated Macro that opens with Macro and hard negation has a strong chance of winning

Domino: mostly because of the varied win conditions

Domino: but I think that once I make day2, people are going to start seeing how strong of an archetype it is

Ally: Ok I see. I hear your famous for war duels. Care to explain a little about that.

Domino: Well, there isn't too much to say besides I always use strong, well-built decks with sides to counter the expected matchups, and I play solidly making few misplays, and make good reads.

Domino: It lets me beat most people

Domino: Against good players, though, I have to outthink them. That’s always an enjoyable experience.

Ally: Hehe that’s always a competition. Can you tell the users whats your war record?

Domino: I've been at this other famous site for a year, and my record on there is 97-25 in wars

Domino: I've been on a 6-7 win streak because of the Explosion deck.

Ally: Very impressive. I have a few more questions for you. What you think of the current banned list nad if you could change one thing on it what would it be?

Domino: I personally enjoy the current list. I would get rid of Snatch and Ring, but other than that, it's good. The past 2 formats have progressively allowed skill to become more of a factor, and although the list is far from perfect, UDE (whoever makes them) has been taking steps in the right direction.

Ally: Ever since the banning of Cyber-Stein they have been. Hopefully there will be more things in the future.

Ally: What do you wish to accomplish in this card game?

Domino: My goals are just to make a fair amount of money off of the game while traveling the country and meeting people.

Domino: Once I win a Jump, I'll get a sponsor and then everything will be set.

Ally: Good luck with that! Are you on a team currently and if so which team?

Domino: Team Wonderbox

Domino: with Jordan Denk, Marcus Spanier, Eric Herdzik, and Dr. Nik

Domino: I don't know how to spell Nik's last name, so we all just call him Dr. Nik

Domino: he's a doctor, y'know

Domino: ;-)

Ally: Final question for you, Has YGO! made a big influence in your life?

Domino: yes

Ally: How so?

Domino: It's given me a much more competitive sense for the other games I play, and has taught me a few choice lessons such as the cliché "don't judge a book by it's cover" in relation to people, although ironically, shady people are generally pretty shady

Ally: I see. I'm glad it taught you a few things and I also like to thank you for doing this interview with me. Would you like to give a closing statement?

Domino: I'd like to say that, first of all, Yu-Gi-Oh! is serious business, and secondly, that Jeff Jones is the best duelist.
