Getting The Facts Straight
Kyle Hintze
By Tony Mera

6.13.07

Mera: What's your name?

Hintze: Kyle Hintze.

Mera: How old are you?

Hintze: 18.

Mera: Where do you live?

Hintze: STL, Missouri.

Mera: What made you pick up Yu-Gi-Oh?

Hintze: I watched the show when It first came out, sent a letter in, won a drawing they did, and got free cards.

Mera: Can you name your credentials?

Hintze: 7th at SJC Indy 06, 3rd at SJC Minneapolis 07, 4 regional t8's out of 6.

Mera: What team are you on?

Hintze: Team Outphase.

Mera: How did Outphase come together?

Hintze: Jake Mcnealy, Jason Halloway, and Chris Bowling all played at the same card store in Texas and decided to make a team.

Mera: Can you explain the sucess of your team?

Hintze: We don't usually come up with something new, but we can all play very well.

Mera: How many members does Outphase currently have?

Hintze: 10 Members.

Mera: Who from your team will be representing Team Outphase at nationals?

Hintze: Everybody, some of us will also be attending canadian nats to cheer on Chris Pittao our Candian team member.

Mera: What do you plan on accomplishing this year?

Hintze: For team Outphase to win Nationals.

Mera: What are your views on the current banned list?

Hintze: I like it, their is no real CC deck which is good.

Mera: Who do you think is the best team?

Hintze: Overdose has credentials over everybody, but of course Team Outphase is.

Mera: Has this game changed you in any way?

Hintze: I'm sure It has, but nothing I've noticed.

Mera: What was your best Sjc experience?

Hintze: In Houston when I joined Team Outphase.

Mera: What was your favorite feature match?

Hintze: When my Teamate Marc Glass won SJC Columbus in the finals.

Mera: What is your favorite thing about Yu-Gi-Oh?

Hintze: A reason to travel, meet new people, and the competition.

Mera: Can you explain to everyone how you do so good?

Hintze: A lot of practice.

Mera: How long do you plan on still playing this game?

Hintze: Until It's no longer fun.

Mera: How do you prepare for events that make you so prepared and ready unlike many others?

Hintze: Relax, playtest a little and make sure I am comfortable with my deck.

Mera: Can you explain why some people are calling you a cheater off a match on metagame agianst Austin In Minneapolis?

Hintze: I have Ring, Heavy, Limiter, Premature, and Metamorphisis in my hand. I did not play storm first incase it was Scapegoat or he wanted to sakuretsu, Mirror Force, or Torrential Tribute. I start to do some math since he took the Card Trooper damage. I figure out I have 28 cards left in my deck and 22 of them are for game, but I need to keep my Card Trooper. So I thought at first that since I have ring, my Card Trooper would be safe. Then I think maybe he plays decree, Dust Tornado, Mystical Space Typhoon or a face down heavy. If he does I could lose my trooper and possible game. So I play Heavy Storm In Main Phase 2, to make sure that I have game next turn no matter what.

Mera: So basically, you were worried what he has face down? You wanted to make sure your trooper was safe from being killed?

Hintze: Not just that, But I needed my ring for damage, and by playing heavy I made sure I could do both.

Mera: Did you even need DMOC off the top?

Hintze: No, it just happen to come off the top. I really wanted Jinzo.

Mera: When he had 2 in hand and that f/d. Did you try to read what he would have in his hand?

Hintze: During the two games, he told me what he was playing. He played 3 bottomless trapholes, and only 16 monksters. Since he did not play one the turn before, I knew he would have to draw one.

Mera: You didn't expect him to have 3 Spell or Trap card's which he all set?

Hintze: He was playing a wierd form of DDT. When he did set all three, I figured two of them were bluffs.

Mera: Even if you didn't draw Dmoc, you still would of had game correct, since the other face down's were bluffs and one was a ring?

Hintze: Yes, before and after he set all 3 I had game. The Ring Of destruction I played did enough damage. He did have call down also. Since I had Limiter, Metamorphasis and Premature Burial In my hand I did not even need to draw. I would pump trooper, premature Dasher and Metamorphasis him into Ryu Senshi, (If I did not dump malicious off trooper) and then attack with Card Trooper and play Limiter.

Mera: You took every percaution and made sure you could protect your trooper, which made you go for that one for one with heavy. You would of had game it looked, even if you did not draw DMOC with Dasher's effect from the Graveyard. It also looks to me, on your turn you tried to examine his graveyard, and tried to make a read from playing your previous 2 games with him. You ended up top decking a DMOC you did not need at all. You made it clear, why you did what you did. It may seem like a weird move to people watching. You were the one playing the match. You tried to make the reads and figure out what was happening so you can set up a perfect play without having your opponent mess it up. You wasted what people may say a a card which should not have been wasted, but it's clear you just wanted to make sure everything was save for the right set up.

Hintze: Yeah.

Mera: Well, Outphase is a good team, and hopefully this will not hurt Outphase's reputation. This just seems to be a big misunderstanding.

Hintze: I'm good friends with the kid that I beat. he knows I did not cheat. The people who started rumors a bout me, are mainly the people I never got along with. It's just depressing they would go this low.

Mera: Things happen. Do you have anything else you would like to say before this interview is over?

Hintze: I would like to thank Shane Scurry and Paul Levatin for loaning me the cards in order for me to be able to play the deck. I want to thank all my team mates that have had my back this entire time.
