Interview With Arlington SJC Champion:
James Naughton
By Ryan Spicer

07.23.07

James Naughton is one of the more respected players in Texas, he won the shonen jump in Arlington last July.  Well here's what he's all about!

Ryan:  Ok to get started off I would like to thank you for taking the time to have this interview.

James:  Anything for you spicer.

Ryan:  First of all, what is your name and where do you live?

James:  My name is James Naughton and I live in Austin, Texas.

Ryan:  How old are you?

James:  17

Ryan:  Are you currently on any team?

James:  For sure, Team Hpnotiq.

Ryan:  What are your accomplishments so far in Yu-Gi-Oh!?

James:  Umm... I would have to say my biggest is my jump win at Arlington of 06' but I have also gotten quite a few regional top8's, 16th Austin SJC, and 9th ATL SJC 05'.

Ryan:  Very solid.

Ryan:  How long have you been playing?

James: Too long, I think about 4 years now.

Ryan:  Can you tell me more about Team Hpnotiq?

James:  Well first off we are all very good friends. I was voted on the team about a month after it was made. Since then a lot of changes have happened and people have come and gone.

James:  We don't travel much and that is something we are trying to change. I think if we start traveling we will be known as the one of the best teams in no time.

Ryan:  Ok, what cards, if any would you like to see hit the ban list?

James:  Really the only one that comes to mind is Card Trooper.

James:  That card is just too broken for the game.

Ryan:  What about ring and snatch?

James:  they balance out the game in my opinion. Snatch keeps people from over extending and ring helps teach people to watch there life points and not just there card advantige.

Ryan:  I have never heard it put like that.

Ryan:  What do you think are the strengths, and weaknesses of having a team?

James:  some strengths of it are definitly being able to test with good players, and also the cards. I am someone that doesnt have a lot of cards, so I am glad to have a team that lets me barrow theres.

Ryan:  If you were to choose who went to worlds, what 4 players would you have represent the USA at worlds?

James:  Umm... Id have to say Fili, T, Me (who wouldn't want to go), and Russell Jessen.  Russell because i need someone to keep me company.

Ryan: Changing subject What is the most frustrating thing about yugioh?

James:  Losing to players that are way worse than you

Ryan:  How much time do you spend on yugioh?

James:  A decent amount of time.  But its not like I spend 8 hours a day on it or anything.  I mean I have a job.  Id say on average 3 hrs a day doing something yugioh related.

Ryan:  How do you feel you stand as a player compared to the rest of the country?

James:  Id say I am still not quite at the top of the skill level. Maybe in my prime I was, but now and days I don't play as well as I used to.

Ryan:  Do you often make play errors, or are you just not as in depth when playing?

James:  I don't make a lot of play errors, but like most players that are on the level as me right now I just dont' make spectacular plays like I used to.  I dont' know, maybe it is just that the opprotunity to hasn't come up.

Ryan:  It often appears you have passed your prime, when you actually just havent had the chance to shine.

James:  that could possibly be the issue

Ryan:  What do you think about the current format?

James:  I think it is a lot like all the formats. People play the same basic stuff mainly machines this format or t-hero.   But this format is different from all the others, in which that there are also other decks out there that can be just as good if built correctly.

Ryan:  When do you plan to quit the game for good?

James:  No later than 08 nationals, if not before then, then that will be my final event.

Ryan:  It will be sad to see you go.

James:  Gotta move on sometime. I got college starting in the fall next year.

Ryan:  What was the funniest thing you have ever seen involving you and your team?

James:  Well we have had a lot of hilarious times.   but I would have to say the Saturday night of Arlington SJC.  We stopped by a gas station to pick up some "DRINKS" and Brad was already "FULL FROM DRINKING". He starts taking a pee at the corner of an intersection and starting singing the national anthem

Ryan:  thats pretty funny.

Ryan:  Was the transformers movie good?

James:  It was Great!

Ryan:  What do you want most right now?

James:  A new card.  A new Car*.  AHHHH.  A NEW CAR*

Ryan:  Whats the next event you plan on attending?

James:  Indy SJc.  Just bought my ticket today.

Ryan:  I plan on going aswell.

Ryan:  What are you ranked in texas?

James:  I believe 5th.

Ryan:  What advantage do you have over people when you play?

James:  90% of the time, i'm better than them.

Ryan:  If you got to change one thing about the game, what would it be.

James:  Nothing that I can think of.

Ryan:  How do you deal with cheating when you enter a tournement?

James:  I just pay attention to my opps well

Ryan:  Are there any shout outs you would like to make?

James:  Harry Anderson, Chris SoRelle, Russell Jessen, Brad Poth, and Ryan Cerda.

Ryan:  What advice can you give to yugioh players out there reading this?

James:  Practice with good players and take notes if you want to get better.

Ryan:  How did you get started playing yugioh?

James:  I was a collecter of DBZ.  and one day my friend convinced me to buy a yugioh pack.  and it went all up hill from there.

Ryan:  Is there anyone that really helped you get to where you are today?

James:  Ryan Cerda

Ryan:  When you were new, did u have any people you looked up to?

James:  Brad Poth

Ryan:  Who is your favorite superhero?

James:  Well whenever I said Flash Harry calls me a communist. So ill have to go with Batman.

Ryan:  What grade are you in, and do you play any sports?

James:  I'm going to be a senior and I used to play Football and Track, but quit.

Ryan:  How do you deal with losing?

James:  I guess I just say to myself its a game.

Ryan:  Who would you say has influenced you the most through yugioh?

James:  I would have to say Russell.  I wouldn't be playing right now if he wasn't there to remind me how much fun we have playing it.

Ryan:  Well, this is the end of the interview, is there anything else you would like to add, or say?

James:  watch out for hpnotiq, theyll getcha

Ryan:  thx for the interview.

Note to readers:  james naughton is probrably one if the best players that has flown under the radar during his time of playing yugioh.  Good luck in the future, and at future events!
