Subject: The rise, fall, and rebirth of the Gravekeepers.
Books-A-Million, Sunrise, FL
Before this report, I have a story to tell. Upon the reign
of Chaos, I saw originality plummet everywhere. Everyone was
taking the easy way out and using Chaos (myself included). I
looked to counter this, but saw only prayer and homicide as
a solution. Then, as the first ban list drew nigh, I
realized my solution, a Gravekeeper deck. However, I didn’t
build it because I thought the Bans would shut down Chaos.
Little did I know, that Chaos would breed with Warriors and
become twice as lethal. Needless to say, I was buying PGD
packs like crazy and scouring the 10 cent bin at the local
card shop. Soon I had a Gravekeeper deck and I was at the
top of the world.
Unfortunately, this high didn’t last. I began to get bored
with Gravekeepers and wanted to build Exodia. I decided to
give it one last Tourney to test its worth.
This tourney had some misconduct going on, so I am not
giving the name as to protect the store.
Round 1
First Duel: I got a great start. I played Terraforming,
Necrovalley, and Magic Reflector, followed by a Facedown Spy
and Royal Tribute, clearing 4 monsters. He didn’t draw a
monster, so flipped Spy to summon Assailant, sacrificed Spy
for Chief and revived Spy and attacked for 6100. Next turn
he set 1 card and a monster, but I played MST and Nobleman
to handle that. He chained Waboku, so I summoned
Cannonholder and launched my field for the win.
Second Duel: Things went slowly at first. I didn’t get
Necrovalley for a while. When I drew it, he activated Time
Seal. At my next Draw Phase, I had forgotten about Time Seal
and went to draw. He said, “I win.” I questioned him and he
claimed that if Time Seal is activated and the opponent
tries to draw, they’re disqualified. I argued that I had
barely touched it, but he kept arguing, so I forfeited. It’s
just a game, kid.
I was feeling pretty low and the Gravekeepers hadn’t served
well enough, so I dumped ‘em.
I tried Exodia, but it never worked out. When I heard about
the new bans and realized that Zombies would be rising, I
went back to the Gravekeepers. In a tourney on 4/2/05, I
tried again at a different store.
Books-A-Million
Price: $1
1st: 3 packs
2nd: 2 packs
3rd: 2 FREE COMMONS!!! And a hearty, “Try again next week,
n00b.”
Round One
1st duel: I played a little kid, but he’s the son of a guy I
know, and he’s pretty good. I got a terrible start. I didn’t
draw a monster for 10 turns! He tried to play Monster Reborn
when I had Necrovalley out, but I reminded him of the
effect, then realized it was banned, but it turns out we
were playing Traditional. I was quickly overwhelmed by
banned cards after that.
2nd Duel: I got Necroflector (Necrovalley + Magic Reflector)
out fast, but once again, failed to draw a monster. When I
finally did, I overwhelmed the poor guy. He showed me his
hand afterward. He had all 3 Chaos monsters and Monster
Reborn and Resurrection.
3rd Duel: I really don’t remember much. The kid Yata-locked
me.
It was a slow tourney, but I made some good trades
afterward. I’m gonna work on my deck some more. I learned an
important lesson, though. ALWAYS SHUFFLE THOROUGHLY!!!
Especially in a Swarm deck. Bad shuffling cost me the game.
Props:
· Revival of the Gravekeepers
· Getting a United We Stand and another Fiber Jar
· Learning the flaws of my deck
Slops:
· Losing on Round 1
· My friends for not showing up (I brought my Pokémon deck
for nothing)
