The Tournament:
Like I said before, there were only eight people in this
tournament so it was decided the tournament would be a three
round Swiss tournament with the top 4 going to single
elimination. The entry fee was $5 and we all got one
tournament pack 5 card given out at random.
First Round: Me vs. ????? (Not usually at the store)
This guy was kind of a noob (put politely). Before
everything got started, we all received our entry card (I
got a Luminous Soldier J). The round started and I knew
right away what I was going to be facing. This guy had
probably a 200 card deck and had now idea how to play
competitively. I made short work of the match and moved to
the second round.
Record 1-0
Second Round: Me vs. Anthony Learman
This was the highlight match of the tournament. It pitted me
against one of my teammates and my biggest rival. He was
running a toolbox warrior deck that I knew I would have a
hard time with. The first round caught me off guard and his
Don Zaloogs and Spirit Reapers made short work of me. In
round two, my deck kicked and I controlled the tempo
throughout the entire duel. I setup my field of Golem
Sentries and a Guardian Sphinx. I waited until the time was
and decided not to pay for messenger. I played Heavy Storm,
flipped my monsters, summon Injection Fairy Lily and swung
for the game with only two minutes left in the match. After
all the shuffling and cutting was over, Anthony got through
one turn before time was called and the match went into the
deciding four turns. I set up a Jujitsu master/messenger
wall and bided my time. I drew everything I needed and the
match went to me.
Record 2-0
Third Round: Me vs. Jon Peckins
This kid usually doesn’t come around to this store but I
knew him from a shop I used to go to. He runs a warrior
hybrid deck that somehow incorporates a sacred phoenix. He
made some key mistakes that won we the match without a whole
lot of effort. The deciding factor was him summoning his
Jinzo and forgetting to dust my messenger of peace first.
Sentry came up and it was over.
Record 3-0
Semi-Finals: Me vs. Jacob Naranjo
This kid is young but very good; he always seems to find a
way in to the top 4 or 8. He was running a Zombie/Phoenix
Hybrid that had been very competitive is the past but
couldn’t seem to breakthrough my messengers and a couple of
well timed Solemn Judgment.
Record 4-0
Finals: Me vs. Jon Peckins
This was a rematch of the third round and I knew what I
needed to do. I played sloppily and gave up the first duel.
Morphing Jar and a sphinx came out and the kinetics came in.
I started the duel off with a messenger and waited for him
to extend his hand (which he always does). When he did, I
had a Heavy Storm and a Guardian Sphinx waiting for him.
Game three went similarly but a well placed cyber jar had me
reeling until I saw the cards I drew from it (Heavy Storm,
Dark Hole, Sangan, Premature Burial, and Giant Rat). He drew
5 monsters but only one could slip under messenger, it hit
giant rat and Kinetic Soldier hit the field. He played
swords (forgetting my storm) and ended his turn. I drew my
second Kinetic and laughed. Heavy Storm and Dark Hole, and
seeing his LP at 1150, I decided to finish the duel with a
Legendary Jujitsu master.
Record 5-0(tournament champ)
Hits: Luminous Soldier. Beating my rival in a tournament
(only the second time). A free pack and six dollars store
credit.
Misses: Pulling nothing out of my free pack. Almost no
competition except Anthony.
From the Home of Apocalypse, this is Topdeck. Out.
