Greetings Readers!
Okay, I read from RJ’s report that the pojo.com tourney
report was dieing… So I think to myself, “Hmm, we can’t
have that!” So I decided to write my own little report.
Note that this report won’t be very detailed as the
tournament took place about 5 days ago and I’m going off
my memory (which tends not to be very accurate
sometimes). Anyway, let the report begin.
So my friend Jeremy, my friend Alston, and I Decided it
was a good day to drive 45 minutes to the closest
tournament to our town. (Yes, seriously) My friend
Alston and I were up all night playing cards and had
gotten about 3 hours of sleep apiece by time we decided
to leave at 11:30, not a bad start.
We arrived at Bob’s Baseball Dugout, our current card
shop of choice fashionably early as we always do,
leaving about 45 minutes or so to trade and play some
practice games. So today I decide I should try a mill
deck in favor of my macro monarchs deck I have been
testing for regionals. So we chatted and traded, our
hopes that Bob had decided to change the tournament to
advanced format was confirmed.
The way Bob’s tournament is run is: There are usually
about 5 rounds, to begin with people are randomly
matched, after that it goes by record. Each round you
must play 3 game regardless of if you win 2 in a row.
Then you report your score out of 3 to Bob. The person
with the most wins total is the winner of the tourney.
If there is a tie the two play a match or game,
whichever they mutually decide to decide the winner. Top
3 or 4 get paid in store credit to get boosters or
single cards or other things.
Around came round 1 and look who I had to play, none
other than my friend Alston! Alston is a pretty solid
player, he was running an anti-chaos deck with kycoos
and royal oppression.
Unfortunately, Alston’s deck type was useless against
me. After a long and grueling game involving a tsukuyomi
/ needle worm barrage along with morphing jar #2 being
flipped a couple of times his deck was out of cards. The
second game was more of the same resulting in another
deck-out. The third game however he sided in a couple of
swordsmen lvl 2 and beat me out. So I ended that round
with 2-1 record. Not too bad, I should have used my side
deck that third game.
Next round was against a kid whose name escapes me… He
is quite good though. Note that I am 18 and most of the
kids here are anywhere from 8-15 so I refer to most of
the guys here as kids. Anyway, I started off stating “By
the end… you WILL fear the Gandhi” I know, it seems
immature, but I’m okay with that. The first game
completely took him by surprise, he must not have the
internet because I was talking to this guy Art up there
who is probably the most respected player there about my
deck being a variation of Gandhi-pants while I was
shuffling. The second game I decided to get a bit
creative and side in my chaos strategy. My deck and side
deck could interchange to make two entirely different
decks. So we ended up playing almost a mirror match, he
was playing chaos as well. The surprising thing about
this duel is that… despite me siding in chaos. I ended
up milling him anyway. The third game he got control
early and won pretty easily. I was now 4-2, not great…
but absolutely astounding for a mill deck.
Round 3 was against Jeremy, (not my best friend Jeremy,
a different one) a guy up there who has very mad skills
I must say. This match was a blur of nobleman of
crossout, magician of faith, and tsukuyomi. Before I
knew what was going on… I had been swept. Note that he
didn’t think he was running a chaos deck when his deck
contained 2 chaos sorcerers… But I’ll let that slide. So
slightly discouraged I went into round 4 with a 4-5
score.
Round 4 went much better than the last one, it was
against another younger kid, he was playing a chaos
deck… a lot of people were today. I swept him, decking
him out each time. I went to round 5 with a slightly
better record of 7-5.
Round 5 was against none other than my best friend,
Jeremy. This was inconvenient… I had to play both of my
friends in the tournament. So we made a deal, whoever
won the match would get all 3 games… this would increase
our chance of getting third place, since neither of us
had a chance otherwise. We proceeded to play, his insect
beatdown was finding it difficult to get through all of
my stall, and his lack of a side deck made it so he
still couldn’t through game 2. I had won the match in
two games and so as we had agreed I claimed all 3 games.
I think I would have likely won the third anyway.
So in the end I ended up getting third place, so $7 of
store credit was mine to spend on 2 packs of invasion of
chaos (after forking over an extra dollar). I headed
back home with the knowledge that I depleted someone’s
deck to zero 10 times today fresh in my head.
Okay, here go the props and slops.
Props:
Bob, for holding the tourney
The fact that I pulled a smashing grounds! (we need 4
more to have 9!)
Art and Jeremy, erm… for being cool and good
competition.
Lack of sleep, it makes everything funnier for some
reason.
Jeremy for driving us up, and buying me a McChicken
afterwards… I was freaking hungry!
Alston for coming with us
Gandhi, for having his name attached to such a cool
deck!
McChicken sandwiches, boy are they delicious!
All the people who DIDN’T run chaos, good job!
Slops:
I didn’t get to play Art! >.< and we didn’t have time
after because Jeremy had to go to work.
The fact that I didn’t win, although I didn’t expect to
win a tourney full of chaos decks with a Gandhi deck.
Feel free to contact me at WorthingAtredes@hotmail.com
with any questions about my deck, or especially if you
live in the south-western Wisconsin area and would be
interested in coming to Bob’s occasionally on Saturdays
to play against me (except on July 22nd when I will be
at regionals.
