Tournament Reports
From: Jason Reeves
Subject: Pippin's Monarch Field Control, The Computer Place,
Brookhaven,MS, Jan. 20
Hello again and welcome to Brookhaven, MS where we pride
ourselves on having more teeth per resident than any other
county in the south. Today is Saturday, and Saturday means
tournament time at the Computer Place on Hwy 51 North. Me
personally, I havn't been in over a month (been kinda busy
with 2 jobs, a wife, and 2 1/2 year old boy) But today was
different. I had to work from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. then
come BACK to work at my second job from 5:00 p.m. to 1:00
a.m. The tourney started at 1 p.m. so I was able to make it
and it ended at 3:00 so I was not late for work :) God is
good.
ANYWHO! One of the comments on my latest poem creation on
the FanFic Pojo Forum was from an old pro and one of the
many rivals in the upper crust of our metagame. Raphael
predicted that it would be he and I in the finals since I
mentioned that I was coming to the Saturday tourney. Not
many hard hard hitters showed up today. Sure some of the
regulars get a happy hand and have the power to win, but I
am talking about the ones that can pull a win from thier
buttcrack even when down. Raphael is one of these people. He
had been playing Stein/Cyber Dragon Deck but UDE saw that
this was bad and NERFED it to heck and back with the banning
of Stein. So now he playing a resemblance of a Monarch deck
(not bad either). SPEAKING of decks, here is mine, and then
I will tell how this day went.
Monsters: 21
2 x Zaborg the Thunder Monarch
1 x Mobius the Frost Monarch
1 x Jinzo
2 x Cyber Dragon
3 x Nimble Momonga
1 x Treeborn Frog
1 x Breaker the Magical Warrior
1 x Injection Fairy Lily
1 x Sangan
2 x Exiled Force
1 x Magician of Faith
1 x Kuriboh
1 x Winged Kuriboh
1 x Old Vindictive Magician
1 x Apprentice Magician
1 x Spirit Reaper
Magics: 13
1 x Last Will
1 x MST
1 x Enemy Controller
1 x Swords of Revealing Light
1 x Smashing Ground
1 x Flute of Summoning Kuriboh
1 x Premature Burial
1 x Nobleman of Crossout
1 x Scapegoats
1 x Creature Swap
1 x Brain Control
1 x Heavy Storm
1 x Graceful Charity
Traps: 6
1 x Torrential Tribute
1 x Call of the Haunted
1 x Ring of Destruction
1 x Mirror Force
2 x Sakuretsu Armor
I just got the Flute of Summoning Kuriboh in a trade today
and decided to see how it worked. If I get another I plan on
putting in another Winged Kuriboh to have another search
target. The spell is a Quickplay Spell and can summon either
Winged Kuriboh or Kuriboh to the field, or bring them to
your hand. Not bad when you need protection or tribute
fodder.
Round 1: John (Horus Lvl Deck)
John is a good player. He pulls out a win every now and then
and makes some of us nervous. Today he was my first
victim... er... opponent. I set T formation. FD Momonga and
FD goats. He summons Horus LV4 and kills Momonga getting
LV6. I gain 1000 and get two more flyin rats. Next turn I
tribute 1 for Mobius killing 2 set backfield, and running
over the 2300 Horus. After that it was pretty much a matter
of time. He would set one or not at all. I summoned IFL and
attacked direct with both Mobius and IFL then next turn
tribute the last flying rat for Jinzo and attack an open
field for game.
Me: 8000-9000-8200-6200
John: 8000-7900-9100-3300-0
1:0
Round 2: Tyler (New Guy)
I had never seen Tyler before, I think. Dunno. He played
Dinosaurs. He gets a great opening hand and has 4 set
backfield and Gilasaurus and Black Stego on the field. He
attacks with Gila once and I think I have a Mirror Force
down but thats what I get for thinking, it was Torrential
Tribute (DOH!) So he hits for 1700. Next turn he attacks
with Gila into a Saku and opts not to attack with Stego
fearing my last set backfield (a bluff) oh well. I brain
control his stego and tribute for Zaborg just to keep his
field clear and set Goats. He summons another Gila and
attacks into goats. Snipe Hunter comes in kicking and rolls
twice and hits twice. Two cards gone, 1 backfield and FD
monster. Zaborg number 2 comes out clearing the way for a
frontal assault. He has 4 set backfield, and triggers
nothing as I attack. Next turn he draws and passes so I
attack again, and again he triggers nothing. I never saw
what his backfield was, but I guess it was jank.
Me: 8000-7200-5500
Tyler: 8000-6300-3800-0
2:0
Round 3: Drew (BUWD Deck)
Drew is another one of those like John. He makes everyone
nervous because IF and WHEN he gets his deck to work, it
works WELL, just its hard to get the
12 cards needed to do some of the combos. I open basic T set
Sangan and Goats. He plays Luster Dragon and attacks into
Sangan digging IFL. He plays Heavy and I trigger Goats. I
summon IFL and attack his Luster Dragon. He sets a Sangan
and passes. I tribute little lady for Mobius killing his
backfield, and attacking direct. He sets another monster,
which is promptly Noblemanned. I attack with Mobius again.
He simply draws and gives up.
Me: 8000-6000
Drew: 8000-6500-4100-700-0
3:0
Round 4: Jaden (No really, thats his real name) Horus Lv
Deck Jaden ended up making it to the semi-finals, so he is
pretty good and has been known to win the whole thing
before. I summon IFL early and attack direct for massive
starting damage. After Raigeki Breaking IFL he attack a FD
Momonga with mad monkey giving me 1000 back. I tribute 1
Momonga for Zaborg setting off Trap Hole. He hits Sangan
with Mad Monkey digging OVM, sets one and ends. I special
Cyber Dragon and Brain Control his Mad Monkey tributing for
Jinzo. I attack his FD monster with Cyber Dragon and hit him
with Jinzo. He summons Horus and LV Up to 8. He attacks
Jinzo killing it.
Next turn I put CD in defense and 1 FD OVM. He attacks and
hits OVM with Horus, killing it. He sets one and ends. I
summon Breaker and kill his last trap, attack with CD to his
set, and direct with Breaker. He draws and ends, playing
nothing.
Me: 8000-6000-7000-6400
Jaden: 8000-4600-2200-1400-0
4:0
Finals: Raphael (as predicted) Early Stage Monarch Raphael
was the best there today, besides me. He almost lost in the
semi's but pulled it out with only 500 LP left. I get Zaborg
out pretty quick for nice hit, but he gets an early IFL on
an open field and digs her in for damage. I get Frog on the
field and keep him there, holding off IFL with a set Sangan.
He tributes my Sangan, digging OVM, with Soul Exchange for
Cyber Dragon and ends. I tribute frog for Mobius and attack
Cyber Dragon. He attacks IFL to Mobius and ends. Now he is
too low to attack with IFL anymore, so I attack her with
Exiled Force. I end and he draws into nothing.
I attack again with Exiled Force for game.
Me: 8000-4600-3600
Raphael: 8000-5600-3600-3300-1300-700-0
5:0
I play tested the Kuriboh thing after tourney, and it worked
great. I think I may leave it in. I did not get a chance to
use during tournament play, but maybe later.
Props: Pulling an Ultimate Rare Dimension Diversion from the
pack (think that was name) Mr. Freels for holding the
tourney as always.
Raphael for being so cool (even after losing) UDE for
banning Cyber Stein :D YEAH BABY!!
Traded a Master of Oz for a Victory Dragon A Snipe Hunter
and Pot of Avarice for a Dark Paladin (just wanted one)
Slops: None really
Until next time, so long from Brookhaven.
Thought of the day: Did Adam and Eve have a belly button? If
we are made in His image, does that mean that God has a
belly button, too? Hmmmmm....
