GX Episode Summary
50. Magna Chum Laude
by: Heavy Metal King
The show starts off with Cyrus and Jaden having practice
duels over their handheld communication devices preparing
for the promotion exams. Of course, Chum Li is resting
because he studied for the exam all night. Since Chum Li
already failed the promotion exams twice, he needs to pass
this year or else he'll be permanently expelled from Duel
Academy.
In art class, Cyrus is drawing a somewhat accurate painting
of the Dark Magician Girl while Jaden has painted a rather
poor looking Elemental Hero Sparkman. Chum Li, on the other
hand, has painted a beautiful portrait of Ayer's Rock. Chum
Li says that he went camping with his father at Ayer's Rock
during the previous summer. As the classmates compliment
Chum Li on his work, Dr. Crowler sends a video announcement
asking Chum Li to report to Chancellor Shepard's office.
Chum Li is given a copy of the Ayer's Rock Sunrise card that
he designed. It did so well that Pegasus has offered Chum Li
a job at Industrial Illusions. Of course, Chum Li needs the
recommendation from Shepard and Crowler. Shepard immediately
agrees to let Chum Li go to Industrial Illusions, but
Crowler isn't as willing to recommend Chum Li just yet. He
then challenges Chum Li to a duel where if Chum Li wins, he
gets to go to Industrial Illusions. If Chum Li loses the
duel, he must pack his things and leave Duel Academy for
good.
Later on that night, Jaden and Chum Li are discussing Chum
Li's situation. Jaden then begins to help Chum Li as the
show cuts to the Obelisk Arena where the duel is about to
start. Chum Li begins the duel by placing a monster face
down in defense mode.
Crowler merely makes a remark at Chum Li for making such a
poor move and plays Magnet Circle Lv2. This card allows
Crowler to special summon Ancient Gear from his hand. Of
course, Ancient Gear allows Crowler to summon other Ancient
Gears from his hand. With two Ancient Gear cards out on
Crowler's field, he then sacrifices them to summon Ancient
Gear Golem. Crowler then attacks Chum Li's face down monster
(which is Des Koala). Chum Li took 1200 points of damage
from Ancient Gear Golem's ability, but Crowler takes 800
from Des Koala.
Chum Li then plays Eucalyptus Mole in defense mode and sets
a card face down. Crowler then has his Golem attack Chum
Li's Mole dealing more damage to Chum Li, who then activates
the effect of his mole to summon a Big Koala from his deck.
Crowler then summons an Ancient Gear beast in defense mode
and calls it a turn. Chum Li then plays Wild Nature's
Release to increase the ATK of his Bog Koala to 4700 and
sends him after Ancient Gear Golem. Crowler loses a chunk of
life points, but knows that Wild Nature's Release will
destroy Chum Li's monster at the end of his turn. Chum Li
then activates his face down card which will return his Big
Koala to his hand and let him summon a different Big Koala.
Chum Li then uses his new Koala to attack Ancient Gear
Beast. Chum Li then sets a card face down and ends his turn.
Crowler has found himself in a tight spot as he plays
Ancient Gear Factory to remove all of the machines in his
graveyard to summon his second Ancient Gear Golem. Crowler
then sends his Ancient Gear Golem after the Big Koala. After
the battle, Chum Li activates a card which lets him pull a
Des Kangaroo from his deck and place it into his hand.
Crowler then ends his turn by playing Ancient Gear Drill
which lets him take a spell card from his deck and place it
face down.
Chum Li then draws the very card he designed. He plays
Ayer's Rock Sunrise, the very card that he had designed.
Chum Li uses it to revive Big Koala and decrease Ancient
Gear Golem's ATK by 200 for each beast, winged beast, or
plant monster in Chum Li's graveyard. Chum Li then remembers
how Ayer's Rock helped him to keep dueling even after
threatening to quit. Chum Li then fuses Big Koala with Des
Kangaroo to form Master of Oz. Chum Li then sends Oz into
the battle only to be stopped by Crowler's face down card
which was a Limiter Removal. Chum Li lost the duel, but
Crowler gave his recommendation anyway. Chum Li is then put
onto a plane heading for Industrial Illusions.
