Rj's Deck Garage
Deck Fix: Fiend Deck
May 4, 2006

Hey readers, welcome back to my Deck Garage. Seems kind of funny, because if you look at my recent articles they're haven't been many decks that I've been able to review, as it takes alot of time to weed through emails (I archived over 400 this morning!), but I'm back here today with a deck! Lets try and help Jonathan out a bit, shall we?

*Just so you guys know, for future reference, THIS is how the email is supposed to be sent to me! He gave me some information about himself, listed his deck out in a good format, and then told me what the flaws are with it. Take note!

"My name's Jonathan and I've been playing Yu-Gi-Oh TCG for about 2 years now. I was a noob for a long time ( never bought lots of starter decks/booster packs ). I've got a solid fiend deck but I wanna take it to the competitive level.

I'm basically and aggro type player but will TRY to play control when needed.

Here it is: ( formatted for April 1st list )

Monsters (20):
1 Sangan
1 Magician of Faith
1 Breaker the Magical Warrior
1 Exiled Force
3 Archfiend Soldier
3 Giant Orc
3 Goblin King
2 Dark Ruler Ha Des
1 Dark Necrofear
1 Strike Ninja
1 Bazoo the Soul Eater
1 Jinzo
1 Dark Magician of Chaos

Spells (11)
1 Book of Moon
1 Heavy Storm
1 Mystical Space Typhoon
1 Graceful Charity
1 Snatch Steal
1 Swords of Revealing Light
1 Premature Burial
1 Lightning Vortex
1 Soul Release
2 Dimension Fusion

Traps (9)
1 Mirror Force
1 Torrential Tribute
1 Deck Devestation Virus
1 Call of the Haunted
2 Draining Shield
3 Sakuretsu Armor ( cheap I know )

Side Deck:
2 Bark of Dark Ruler
1 Royal Decree
1 Return from the Different Dimension
1 Soul Release
1 Card Destruction
1 Confiscation
1 Nobleman of Crossout
1 Ceasefire
1 Scapegoat
1 Creature Swap
1 Magician of Faith
1 Mask of Darkness
1 Night Assailant
1 D.D. Warrior Lady

The deck IS kind of random. I LOVE Dark Ruler Ha Des and when I saw that it couldn't be summoned from the graveyard, I had to find a way to bring it back.

SO, I Soul Release, Dark Necrofear, Strike Ninja, and Bazoo monsters and Dimension Fusion to swarm and win. I mainly swarm using 3 Goblin Kings, 1 Ha Des, and Jinzo. It's a bit ambitious but it works against certain deck types, but with everybody playing Control, it's getting hard to win. I can't beat Stein or Warrior decks.

Perhaps I should give you a few explanations for some cards. I wanna eliminate the need for Soul Release but I don't know what else to run. I'd like to see The End of Anubis somewhere. I don't main deck Nobleman of Crossout because the monster I destroy would come back through my Dimension Fusion. Card Destruction is sided because it just doesn't work sometimes. I HAVE considered running Magical Mallet/Reload. I have no idea what to remove for a second Magician of Faith. I used to run Mystic Plasma Zone x2 but that just took up space and led to more dead draws. I also considered Pot of Avarice.

SO, thank you for reading this submission. I desperately NEED help. Basically, I need a WHOLE lot more technique in my deck. If you see this deck going a different direction other than remove/swarm, please tell me.

Thank you for your time. Please get back to me ASAP.
And please, if you desire, feel free to put my deck up on Pojo.com.

Thank you again.

Jonathan

P.S. I NEED help."

To be honest, I'm astounded at how well he wrote this email to me. He let me know EVERYTHING about his deck, and the things he'd like me to fix for him, such as fixing the Nobleman of Crossout problem and adding in a second Magician of Faith, which we'll definitely get to. Good job and great email Jonathan!

Well to start off of course, we'll go to the Monsters.

The VERY first thing I notice when looking at the deck is a lack of Slate Warrior, a fiend staple! I do like the route you're going with Giant Orc and the other Dark monsters to use Deck Devastation Virus, but here is a better build in my opinion.

[20] Monsters

[1] Dark Necrofear
[1] Jinzo
[1] Dark Ruler Ha Des
[3] Giant Germ
[2] Slate Warrior
[1] D.D. Assailant
[1] D.D. Warrior Lady
[1] Breaker the Magical Warrior
[2] Goblin Elite Attack Force
[2] Magician of Faith
[1] Sangan
[2] Spirit Reaper
[2] Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive

This is a REALLY solid Fiend monster lineup. Jinzo, Necrofear, and Dark Ruler round out the Tributes, Giant Germ feeds the graveyard for Necrofear, and Slate Warrior is...well, it has to be there ;P.

D.D. Assailant and Warrior Lady support the Remove from Game concept of the deck, Goblin Elite wrecks any 4 star monster and Cyber Dragon, Dekoichi is just a solid card and helps out the Remove from Game theme even MORE, while setting you up for easy tributes. The rest are just support filler monsters like Spirit Reaper and Magician of Faith.

Moving onto the magics, I definitely see where you're coming from with the problems you stated. Soul Release leads to dead draws, even if it supports the theme, and I really don't like Lightning Vortex in this deck, at all =[. I'd suggest using this:

[12] Spells

[1] Graceful Charity
[1] Heavy Storm
[1] Mystical Space Typhoon
[1] Snatch Steal
[1] Book of Moon
[2] Nobleman of Crossout
[2] Smashing Ground
[1] Enemy Controller
[1] Scapegoat
[1] Creature Swap

This lineup may surprise you the most. There is a lack of Dimension Fusion which was the main support card in the deck (!!!), and you may also notice that I didn't leave in Premature Burial. Premature Burial is far from a staple, most duelist minds are clouded to actually believe that! It is best left to a deck using alot of beat sticks and doesn't have a heavy RFG basis, this deck DOES have a heavy RFG theme, thus this will be a dead draw sometimes and there isn't really much room for it at all.

Scapegoat is such a great card this format! It can give you up to 4 turns of just drawing and passing, setting up your win. Nobleman of Crossout is just a staple in an offensive oriented deck, thus I was forced to drop Dimension Fusions for them.

But without Dimension Fusion, how will we bring back the big RFG'd monsters?!

Moving on to traps:

[9]

[1] Mirror Force
[1] Call of the Haunted
[1] Torrential Tribute
[2] Return from the Different Dimension
[2] Sakuretsu Armor
[1] Dust Tornado
[1] Ceasefire

Return from the Different Dimension is INFINITELY better than Dimension Fusion. Most of the time it cost MUCH less to use, and its a trap thus you can use it for Defense if you're that desperate, and it also doesn't help the opponent in any way!

Ceasefire is just amazing. Its won me ALOT of games since the beginning of this banned list. I know 9 traps may seem like alot when you're main decking Jinzo, but it functions well, trust me ^__~.

The final deck looks like this:

[21] Monsters

[1] Dark Necrofear
[1] Jinzo
[1] Dark Ruler Ha Des
[3] Giant Germ
[2] Slate Warrior
[1] D.D. Assailant
[1] D.D. Warrior Lady
[1] Breaker the Magical Warrior
[2] Goblin Elite Attack Force
[2] Magician of Faith
[1] Sangan
[2] Spirit Reaper
[2] Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive
[1] Bazoo the Soul Eater

[12] Spells

[1] Graceful Charity
[1] Heavy Storm
[1] Mystical Space Typhoon
[1] Snatch Steal
[1] Book of Moon
[2] Nobleman of Crossout
[2] Smashing Ground
[1] Enemy Controller
[1] Scapegoat
[1] Creature Swap

[9]

[1] Mirror Force
[1] Call of the Haunted
[1] Torrential Tribute
[2] Return from the Different Dimension
[2] Sakuretsu Armor
[1] Dust Tornado
[1] Ceasefire

I really like this build. Like, ALOT ;P. Your opponents Nobleman of Crossouts will quickly remove your Slate Warriors and Dekoichis, which will definitely hurt for your opponent when your Return them =].

Creature swap seems random without much support, but its a solid card when giving them a Flipped Magician of Faith, a Attack mode Spirit Reaper to punch through ALOT of damage with Return. The deck opens nicely with Dekoichis/Giant Germs, and late game topdecks like a beast with PLENTY of beat sticks and Returns single handedly winning you the game.

This is, again, a very basic deck list for you to work with. You can easily swap some things around to your liking, this is something I made in a pinch.

Overall, I hope you like it Jonathan, thanks for writing!
