Piercing Your Courageous Soul:
How to Use a Monk Deck

June 29, 2005

As I promised, I have returned with another article. Once again, another deck that's based around newly released The Lost Millennium cards. So, with fighting spirit, we have to introduce the Monk cards. There really is a simple way to think of them in reality, the Monk Fighter is the Karate Kid, and Master Monk is Mr. Myagi...yeah good old 80s humor, and Kaminote Blow is "wax on....wax off!" and Lone Wolf...well..thats the cool Mr. Myagi. So really, this deck can't be competitive with too much success (I'd know, I tried it) so we're going on a casual route with it. So onto the introduction of the cards and their support.

TLM-EN019 Monk Fighter
Earth/Rock/3/1300/1000
Effect: Make all Battle Damage inflicted to the Life Points of this card's controller 0.

TLM-EN020 Master Monk
Earth/Rock/5/1900/1000
Effect: This card cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. This card cannot be Special Summoned except by Tributing 1 "Monk Fighter" on your side of the field. This card can attack once again in a row.

TLM-EN042 Kaminote Blow
Spell/Normal
You can only activate this card if there is at least 1 face-up "Chu-Ske the Mouse Fighter", "Monk Fighter", or "Master Monk" on your side of the field. Destroy the monster(s) that battle with these monsters on your side of the field this turn, at the end of each Damage Step.

TLM-EN045 Legendary Black Belt

Spell/Equip
You can only equip this card to "Chu-Ske the Mouse Fighter", "Monk Fighter", or "Master Monk". When the equipped monster destroys your opponent's monster and sends it to the Graveyard as a result of battle, inflict damage to your opponent's Life Points equal to the DEF of the destroyed monster.

TLM-EN060 Lone Wolf
Trap/Continuous
You can only activate this card if there is only 1 monster on your side of the field, and it is "Chu-Ske the Mouse Fighter", "Monk Fighter", or "Master Monk". That monster is not destroyed as a result of battle, and is unaffected by any of your opponent's monster effects.

So, there is the stuff we'll be using. Sadly we will not be using Chu-Suke, because he really isn't THAT amazing in a Monk deck (once again, I've tried it but if you want it do it yourself, go ahead). Let's look at the Monks a bit first then move onto the support cards.

Monk Fighter is interesting enough, for the simple idea he doesn't take battle damage. So, if Envoy smacks into him, he takes nothing which is pretty decent. He's got 1300 attack, which in reality is nothing to brag about, but for his effect I suppose its not too bad. 1500 would have been nicer but we're stuck with 1300. Master Monk, he's the big kahuna, a 1900 double attacker. Yeah, 1900 and he's nomi; not very alluring but its something to consider expanding upon. So, they're relatively simple in reality, their support cards are what make these monsters very fun.

Next, we've got Kaminote Blow, which works amazing with the Monk Fighter. Look at it this way, X monster attacks it, Monk Fighter dies, you take nothing. Next turn, you activate this and the monster dies, simple. Although it seems somewhat costly (well, is costly) you'll find it working in the oddest and best situations. After that, Legendary Black Belt unviels itself. It provides an Elemental Hero Flame Wingman effect, but with defense rather than attack. Notice, he's only got 1900 attack, so killing defensive monsters and dealing damage seems ideal. Simple effect. Makes Master Monk a little more worth using. Lastly, there is Lone Wolf, which is the base support card of the 3. It makes them immune to death by battle and monster effects, and they don't die by battle. Amazing really. Master Monk can gain the abilities to: Not die by battle, Deal damage equal to DEF points, and double attack, and immune to monster effects. But to properly harness these you must know what you're doing of course, so here's a brief idea.

Using Monk Fighter:

Monk Fighter is delicate, he isn't much of an attacker and isn't much of a defender so playing him when your opponent has 1-2 or 3 monsters is idiotic. Let's try from that and go more towards the special summoning route. More simple.

Monk Fighter is easily taken advantage of by Giant Rat, making Master Monk easier to summon in a speed sense.

Monk Fighter and Master Monk both benefit from Gaia Power, playtesting that isn't a half bad idea.

Monk Fighter is NOT meant for battle despite being called "Fighter" he's more of "I need to be special summoned to become really cool", however he makes an EXCELLENT wall when combined with Lone Wolf.

Using Master Monk:

Master Monk, unlike Monk Fighter is based towards attacking,, obviously. So equipping him would be a wise choice.

Master Monk can ONLY be special summoned by use of Monk Fighter, keep his nomi-ness in mind.

Master Monk can have various skills, but combining all skills at once is bad management of your hand, so be smart.

Yep, so those are basic "guidelines" for the two, sure, they may seem obvious...but...really, they're quite sneaky = ). Anyways, we have to move along, I'm drifting a bit, here's the final casual copy of the deck
