Sugar, We're Going Down: How To Construct a Burndown

                                                By:WiCkEd

7.22.05  Hey guys, this is my last article for this magical week of nothingness. This is also a competitive deck article, I want to also say something: I do not hate Black Luster Soldier-Envoy of the Beginning anymore, its somewhat childish. This DOES NOT mean I'll add it to every deck I fix, I'll try and avoid it so you all have nothing to worry about.

So, with that said, here we are contructing the Burndown deck. Now, most are unfamiliar with the concept of a Burndown deck. Basically, is combines the power of aggressive decks (Chaos, CCCC) and the lifepoint drain (Burn) into one collaborative mix. I'm going to be explaining the deck and its variations, let's get onto some of what we'll be using.

To complement the Burn aspect, we have...

Stealth Bird

Messenger of Peace

Wave-Motion Cannon

Secret Barrel

and Ceasefire

Reasoning Behind Using These

Stealth Bird is a 700/1700 Winged Beast, who when flipped up (manually, by you) deals 1000 Lifepoints worth of damage to your opponent. It's also Dark and Level 3...very cool. Making him Chaos Food, slips under Level Limit Area-B, comes out of Mystic Tomato,  and he benefits from Enraged Battle Ox (scary eh?). He's vital to this deck since most of the times you'll be wanting synergy with the Burn and Beatdown aspect, this provides Burn and Chaos food. Synergy. He's in the deck indefinately.

Messenger of Peace is a stall card thats continuous, and only costs 100 Lifepoints per turn. It stops anything with 1500 Attack Points or higher from attacking, this my friend is perfect for this deck. You can stop the payments anytime you wish. This is a peachy keen card, thus, it goes in.

Wave-Motion Cannon is a Burn card, obviously, but should be looked at as more than a Burn card. Wave-Motion Cannon is a potential sudden death win condition, which in competitive play is very important. You'll often see in most Shonen Jump Championship decks there is always one copy of Wave-Motion in either the main deck or side deck. It gains 1000 points every turn after the turn it has been played, whenever you decide to (on your turn of course), you can detonate it and deal that much damage to your opponent's lifepoints. Peachy keen this card, so it goes in.

Secret Barrel is a Burn card whos damage reflects on your opponent's playstyle. This can sometimes be dangerous, other times it can be a benefit. The aggressive reckless player who has no field when this is around is a safe idea that you're going to want to side this out next game for something else. The confined, defensive player is the perfect target for this. Barrel deals 200 Lifpeoints worth fo damage for each card on your opponents field and in their hand. Although it seems small, it can turn the tide of the most engaging of battles.

Lastly, there is Ceasefire. Ceasefire is an excellent anti-Flip Effect card and Burn card. It could be used as a possible mid-late game win condition, or as a defensive ploy at the beginning of the game to lure out your opponent's Typhoon or as a bluff, only to chain itself to that card. Ceasefire itself flips all facedown monsters on the field faceup, in addition, for all effect monsters on the field at that time your opponent loses 500 lifepoints worth of damage, oh, did I mention it negates all Flip effects? Very fiesty card.

Now, as for the Beatdown aspect of this deck, think of a CCCC decks monster build, D.D. Assailant, Tsukuyomi, Black Luster Soldier-Envoy of the Beginning, Magician of Faith. Those all should be bell ringers for any casual or competitive player. Those would be the primary addition to the monster line-up. I'll explain their uses.

D.D. Assailant and D.D. Warrior Lady are removal, and solid attackers for their godly effects. Assailant is a 1700/1600 whilst his female counterpart is a 1500/1600. Assailant is a Earth Level 4, and the Lady is a Light Level 4, this isn't too shabby. When Assailant battles anything and dies, he and the opposing monster are removed, fun. With the Lady, there is the option to remove or send to the Graveyard normally, that is the only variation, outside stats.

Tsukuyomi is for Goat Control abuse, and Flip effect Abuse, which in this sort of deck can be on and off in terms of recognition. Tsukuyomi is a 1100/1400 Book of Moon effect Spirit, while he has trouble maintaining field presence, his effect is completely reuseable. He's also Dark Chaos Food, beneficial indeed.

Magician of Faith is one of the most broken monsters of Advanced Format. The ability to reuse Pot of Greed, Graceful Charity or Delinquent Duo in a Format which demands hand advantage is amazing. She's a Level 1 Light, Chaos fodder and Morphable. Nifty. She should be seen in almost all competitive decks, if you aren't running her, I'd be honestly suprised. She's in indefinately.

Black Luster Soldier-Envoy of the Beginning = self explanitory, honestly.

So, I'm sure you're all curious for the build of the deck, so let's move unto it.

1 x Black Luster Soldier-Envoy of the Beginning

1x  Airknight Parshath

2 x Magician of Faith

1 x Mystic Tomato

1 x D.D. Warrior Lady

1 x Tribe-Infecting Virus

1 x Book of Moon

3 x Secret Barrel

1 x Ring of Destruction

1 x Ceasefire

1 x Torrential Tribute

1 x Mirror Force

1 x Call of the Haunted

So, how does one play this deck? Well, play it like a Beatdown, with the addded Burn to inflict more damage and speed the deck along on its way to victory. The name is nearly selfexplanitory, but hey, no trouble in explainations eh? Well, as you can also notice, the deck is a bit Trap heavy with 8 Traps, but it really won't feel that way.  The build I gave is very competitive, whereas unlike my normal fixes, those may be considered a little more casual competitive. So, with all this said, I hope you all enjoyed this article, who knows, maybe it'll win a SJC? We'll have to wait and see. So until next week guys, I'm out. Enjoy your weekends. = )
